ABC News catches Palin & her truth squad in a lie

On Monday, September 15 we wrote about the press conference held by the newly formed McCain/Palin truth squad that was formed to conduct a full frontal assault to shift blame for the Troopergate story away from Governor Palin.

During the press conference, Meg Stapleton, spokesperson for the McCain/Palin campaign released a series of emails detailing the frustration several Palin administration officials experienced in dealing with Monegan.

The "last straw," the Stapleton said, was a trip Monegan planned to Washington in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

I wrote in my blog following the press conference that "Monegan stated on the KTUU News that the trip was authorized and supported by Governor Palin which seems to make sense because Alaska leads the nation in sexual assault."

On Friday, September 19, ABC News broke the story that not only was the trip authorized, but it was signed off on by the governor's own chief of staff. Once again, the McCain/Palin truth squad have been caught in a lie.

Exclusive: New Doubts Over Palin's Troopergate Claims

Internal Government Document Contradicts Sarah Palin, Campaign

By JUSTIN ROOD

Sept. 19, 2008—

An internal government document obtained by ABC News appears to contradict Sarah Palin's most recent explanation for why she fired her public safety chief, the move which prompted the now-contested state probe into "Troopergate."

Fighting back against allegations she may have fired her then-Public Safety Commissioner, Walt Monegan, for refusing to go along with a personal vendetta, Palin on Monday argued in a legal filing that she fired Monegan because he had a "rogue mentality" and was bucking her administration's directives.

"The last straw," her lawyer argued, came when he planned a trip to Washington, D.C., to seek federal funds for an aggressive anti-sexual-violence program. The project, expected to cost from $10 million to $20 million a year for five years, would have been the first of its kind in Alaska, which leads the nation in reported forcible rape.

The McCain-Palin campaign echoed the charge in a press release it distributed Monday, concurrent with Palin's legal filing. "Mr. Monegan persisted in planning to make the unauthorized lobbying trip to D.C.," the release stated.

But the governor's staff authorized the trip, according to an internal travel document from the Department of Public Safety, released Friday in response to an open records request.

The document, a state travel authorization form, shows that Palin's chief of staff, Mike Nizich, approved Monegan's trip to Washington, D.C., "to attend meeting with Senator Murkowski." The date next to Nizich's signature reads June 18.

In response to inquiries about the document Friday, the McCain-Palin campaign provided a statement from Randy Ruaro, another aide to Palin.

According to Ruaro, Monegan asked for -- and received -- approval for the travel without telling Palin's staff his reason for going. "As a matter of routine, the travel was approved by Mike Nizich ... weeks before the actual purpose was made clear by former Commissioner Monegan," Ruaro wrote.

"When you receive permission to travel, it does not mean that you receive blanket authorization to discuss or do whatever you would like on that trip," he added.

Last week a legislative panel approved a subpoena for Nizich to be interviewed by Stephen Branchflower, the prosecutor hired to conduct the Alaska Legislature's inquiry into Troopergate. The Attorney General informed the Legislature earlier this week that Nizich and other state employees subpoenaed in the matter would not submit to interviews.

Nizich did not respond to a message left Friday afternoon.

In Palin's court filing Monday to stop an investigation by her state Personnel Board she earlier had requested her lawyer, Thomas V. Van Flein, included numerous emails from her staff expressing confusion and incredulity over Monegan's planned D.C. trip. None of those emails were sent by or to Nizich, although he was cc'd on several.

Contacted Friday, Monegan confirmed the travel authorization was to pursue funding for the anti-sexual-violence program. He said the travel authorization form was completed in a fashion consistent with practice, even though it showed no expenditures. The signed form approved the travel, he said, and authorized him to use a government credit card or seek reimbursement for expenses he incurred during the trip.

Monegan said he didn't know why Palin's chief of staff approved a trip that confounded her other aides. "It sounds like it's a breakdown of communication internal to the governor's staff," he said.

Questions:

According to Palin aide Randy Ruaro, Monegan asked for -- and received -- approval for the travel without telling Palin's staff his reason for going. "As a matter of routine, the travel was approved by Mike Nizich ... weeks before the actual purpose was made clear by former Commissioner Monegan," Ruaro wrote.

"When you receive permission to travel, it does not mean that you receive blanket authorization to discuss or do whatever you would like on that trip," he added.

..What kind of government reformer has an administration that auhorizes travel before knowing exactly what the purpose of the travel is for? Especially when the authorized travel is to Washington D.C. to meet with a United States Senator.

Monegan Trip to DC

Monegan was going to DC on 7/22 (per ABC doc) for the unveriling of Sen. Murkowski's bill (7/23) - The Tribal Law and Order Act of 2008 One co sponsor was Joe Biden... press release - http://www.commondreams.org/news2008/0723-19.htm In fact AK was mentioned specifically for a program in the bill: "The Alaska Senate established a task force to review the Village Police Safety Officer Program. The task force published a report in February 2008 recommending enhanced efforts to recruit and retain officers, thereby increasing staffing." Clearly the Gov. office new of this important bill and Monegan being there to support it and then lobby made perfect sense...

To our "Lower 48" friends:

It needs to be said once again for all the newcomers on Andrew's site. Walt Monegan is one of the most widely respected men in our state, and for good reason. He dedicated his life to law enforcement, and is a "cop's cop". You would love a friend or neighbor of his character, and truly appreciate his demeanor behind a badge. He did make one glaring mistake: when asked by Sarah Palin to be commissioner, he said yes. The filth you hear from the Republican Party (my party), McCain and Palin, are not reflective of the character of the man. The fact that these lies are daily regurgitated by "conservative" commentators are the reason many of us no longer listen to Rush, Sean, etc. Their lack of judgement in not checking the facts for themselves have greatly harmed their credibility.

jim you should be ashamed

of yourself for spreading false accusations against Monegan, he is an honarable law enforcement professional. If a valid TRO had been served against him that was later upheld by the court he would not have been carrying a weapon or badge. I bet if you actually did your homework instead of relying on the Palin talking heads you would find that the alleged tro was never upheld in court.

False?

False accusations? Take it up with his ex-wife: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/09/15/BALE12T2N3.DTL Hell, Walt even ADMITTED he dislocated her shoulder but said it happened when he was "tickling" her. I've wrestled with my wife, tickled her a few times and had sex in the back of a small car. I never injured her or dislocated her shoulder.

That's funny

I have dislocated my shoulder doing something as simple as getting out of my car wrong, some people (like me) have loose ligaments holding their joints together. Unless you were there you have no idea what happened.

Jim: The standart by which we are all measured

So Jim, because you've never bowled a 300, no one ever has. Because you don't like boiled beets, no one else really does, because you don't. I see Jim. So tell me: have you ever caused email loss when rebuilding an Exchange server? I have to do that soon and I'd like to know if it's possible. If you haven't then I won't happen to me! Because you're Jim! most knowledgeable and experienced.

Was Monagan fired because he was wife beater?

Let us know Jim. Is this Sarah's next explanation? Is that why this is relevant? We want to be ahead of things here. And having a "Truth Squad Member" like you tell us will really help.

Missing Podcast

Andrew, Where is your show's podcast from Friday September 19th? Its not on 650keni.com

Palin isn't Stupid

The Troopergate affair demonstrates why a "Maverick" (aka "Rogue") Republican governor so freely fires anyone that isn't "loyal" to her. She fired Bitney because he had an extramarital affair. She fired many others as Mayor of Wasilla, and governor. Why? Simple. Being a maverick means you shake up government, create enemies, lie, and even break the law at times. You need a loyal cabinet that will fall on their swords to defend you when the going gets tough. Troopergate illustrates how it all works. Three cabinet members failed to testify under subpoena. Seven others soon will be served with subpoenas to testify. Likely, they too will not show. It is sadly evident that politicians who build cabinets of cronies cannot be trusted to run government.

The new "old boys network".

She claims to have booted out the previous "old boys network" but then installed her cronies, aka the new, more corrupt "old boys/girls network". Palin claimed on Hannity's interview that she admired McCain's openness to other views. What a crock. Yeah, the crony approach to leadership is an absolute failure. Integrity of this current bunch = zero.

Is this really an issue?

Monegan never took the trip. He was fired before he had the chance to do so. The signing of the TA form didn't mean that the ultimate reason for the trip was approved. I'm disgusted by Palin as much as the next person, but this is one time I'm not sure I see much of a controversy.

http://alaskapoliticsblog.blogspot.com/

...In time there will be an email released to the public that will show  the governor's aide Randy Ruaro, who is saying the trip was unauthorized, knew exactly the reason for Monegan's trip. This allegation that somehow Monegan blind sided these people is a complete fabrication....or as some might call it....a lie.

Good things these folks weren't very smart about what they did.

One more time, Monegan

One more time, Monegan requested approval to meet with Sen Lisa Murkowski which was granted. After travel was approved - as I have pointed out several times - THEN he announced he was going to go see Stevens which is NOT what the Palin Admin wanted.

...so he gets approval to see one Senator and not the other? Does anyone think that Sen. Murkowski is not going to work with Sen. Stevens on a worthwhile request? That doesn;t even pass the straight face test. AH

Again

The last straw, the McCain campaign said, was in July, when Monegan planned to travel to Washington to seek federal money for a plan to assign troopers, judges and prosecutors who could exclusively handle sexual assault cases -- one of the state's most intractable crime problems. In a July 7 e-mail, John Katz, the governor's special counsel, noted two problems with the trip: The governor hadn't agreed the money should be sought, and the request was "out of sequence with our other appropriations requests and could put a strain on the evolving relationship between the Governor and Sen. (Ted) Stevens.'' Four days later, Monegan was fired.

Talis Colberg's Unethical Conduct

In today's Anchorage Daily News, Talis Colberg is on record as having stated the Governor's employees could voluntarily decide not to comply with a subpoena, out of loyalty to the Governor. It is unfortunate that the State's Attorney General can get away with advising State employees to break the law.

Say it ain't so.....

I'm shocked, shocked that the Palin people lied about this.

/Channeling Capt. Louis Renauly

Another Palin lie

Note how Palin has said 1) She first held a pow wow to ask her kids if she should accept the VP nod, and 2) That it was kept secret until they were whisked away by plane to Ohio (also Todd's story on FOX). --- I say it's time to Recall Palin as AK Gov!!

Palin recall as Gov??

Today in the Anchorage Daily News (www.adn.com) the editor writes a blistering piece on how Palin has 'abdicated' her role as Gov and completely handed over the reins to McCain operatives. The word 'recall' is used -- and I believe the concept will get some legs. Alaskans are pissed, Yup Yup!

I just heard a McCain

I just heard a McCain surrogate on MSNBC accuse Walt Monegan of beating his wife. I am disgusted. Palin and McCain are willing to smear anyone, lie and slander, to get their way. I hope you take that b**** down.

The Monegan alleged wife

The Monegan alleged wife beating was reported in a(n) SF newspaper last week and included quotes from his ex-wife who had to obtain a TRO. They usually don't give those out because someone raises their voice.

Anyone can get a TRO by

Anyone can get a TRO by making an allegation. So they give them out for a mere allegation – no voice need even be raised. Remember, Palin appointed a known sexual harasser, who had been reprimanded in the course of his employment, to replace Monegan. Monegan's personal life — whatever may be true about it — has no bearing on the current situation.

Restraining Orders

In current times restraining orders are handed out like candy to any woman who asks for one and especially so when there is a divorce in the picture. Reasons as foolish as because he raised his voice are common. Actually no reason is necessary for a woman to get a TRO. All she has to say is she *felt* intimidated or scared. Truth isn't necessary for a woman to obtain one either.

sounds familar

this is exactly what they did to trooper wooten. they ( sarah forcing molly ) walked into the palmer courthouse and filed false allegations, then when it got moved to anchorage where sarah has no clout it was disolved. Molly admitted in court that mike had never physically abused her and that she filed it under pressure. I think it has become very easy for people to use these as leverage true or untrue.

re

sorry jim... but it doesn't take much to get a tro, and yes they do issue them for someone raising their voice. it happens all the time. no evidence is needed, only a statement that someone is afraid of the other person, and that they are in some sort of domestic relationship.

Palin Lies

If anyone on the planet does not know by now when Palin moves her lips covered in lipstick it is a lie. She is struggling so much now with the lies because in order for a lie to be effective and for you to remember you must start with a bit of the truth. There is no truth in her statements now. Somebody do something before she ends up in the White House. OMG we could get her back.

What I'd really like to know

What I'd really like to know about Sarah Palin is how in the name of God did this woman make it to the Governor's office? I'm serious. The more I read about her and hear her speak, it's pretty obvious that she's a blank page. So how did she do it? Here's her answer to a question about energy at a Townhall meeting two days ago and it's painful to read. This sounds like Quayle-speak. "Of course, it's a fungible commodity and they don't flag, you know, the molecules, where it's going and where it's not. But in the sense of the Congress today, they know that there are very, very hungry domestic markets that need that oil first. So, I believe that what Congress is going to do, also, is not to allow the export bans to such a degree that it's Americans who get stuck holding the bag without the energy source that is produced here, pumped here. It's got to flow into our domestic markets first."

IMO, she got this far

IMO, she got this far because our local media was not doing it's job. They were fawning over her just as many Alaskans and many in the L48 have been doing since the VP pick. That's the same kind of drivel she spewed out up here. But people aren't listening to her words or her lack of actual answers, they're drinking in her skill at speaking, her spokesmodel appeal. Citizens who were aware of problems tried to get the local media to report the other side, the criticisms and failings, but they were either ignored or the reports were trivialized and immediately followed by a demonizing denial from the administration. Then Palin, with the help of the press, ruined careers of those people brave enough to speak up. So fewer people dared speak up. And the general population who relied on the local media for facts was being fed a very skewed perception of reality. That continued throughout her political career until Andrew broke the story on "troopergate". The local media has been doing better since, especially after the national media swooped in. But really, Andrew has been our best source for the "real scoop". Thanks, Andrew! And a huge thank you also to Mr Monegan for taking so many hits from the Palin administration and the McCain camp on behalf of the truth and of us, your fellow Alaskans. We all owe you.

It's over

Here's the short story: French has nothing, no smoking gun. If he did, it would already have been leaked to his sympathetic friends in the media. You've already seen his case, it has been posted here, on KTUU, broadcast on Fagan's show. That's all there is. Follow along now: French wanted several things: To maximize his time in the spotlight while embarrassing as many Republicans as possible and sloshing as much mud as he could onto Palin. The DNC and Obama folks wanted to keep his in the spotlight until as close as possible to the election, keeping it before the voters and then snapping the "October Surprise." At the very least, it needed to remain an issue until the VP debates. In order to accomplish this, French needed an excuse to keep the investigation alive and he was hoping for more to work with. If he wasn't going to find a smoking gun in this issue, maybe he'd find another trail to follow. 'Say, Todd, in talking to you about Monegan you mentioned that you drove your wife home from a soccer game.........isn't that a misuse of state property?' He wanted to subpoena as many folks as possible, hoping to find any inconsistencies in their stories so he could continue to drag this out until just before the election. Think about this: If French thought he had the force of law behind him, If he thought he could dig up some actual evidence, he'd be in front of a judge on Monday asking that he or she enforce the subpoenas and compel the witnesses to testify. Instead, he's going to release his findings on next Friday, the day of the first Presidential debates so he can get maximum exposure and the most possible embarrassment for the Republicans. DNC and Obama lawyers are going over the text right now to make sure there are plenty of quotes and sound bites that can be pulled. The framework of the report has already been written and will contain strong language about 'gross misuse of power' and 'abuse of authority' but will not have any actual evidence. The whole report will be a strong case of connect the dots: 'See, Sarah got mad and called Walt. He did nothing so she called Murlene who also called Walt. More calls. Then Walt got fired but not for the reason claimed....' At no point will it be mentioned that Sarah didn't need a reason to fire Walt. French will never say that there were many folks in Juneau who were not thrilled with Walt for a variety of reasons. Nobody will note that Walt protected Wooten out of some misguided sense of loyalty, perhaps driven by the mindset that comes from Walt being an _alleged_ wife beater himself. AThen French will mutter darkly about 'this matter is not concluded' and tell the voters he will take it back to the Legislature.........who will refuse to act. "But a bipartisan vote.." Baloney. That vote was taken months ago before French revealed his true colors and hired Walt's pal Branchflower to be the "independent" investigator and then proceeded to pull the strings. Obama loses, French stays in the State Senate, runs for governor in '10. Loses in the primary to Mark Begich who gets buried in the general by Sean Parnell. VP Palin serves with distinction for many years, eventually takes over to finish out McCain's second term. She is elected President on her own in '16 and handily re-elected in '20.

JimAK your whole theory

JimAK your whole theory falls apart for this simple reason: the investigation was duly authorized LONG before McCain picked Palin to be his VP. Think about it.

Re: It's Over

Your assessment is idiotic. You have no basis in fact or reason. 1) If the information gathered by Branchflower was leaked to the press it would only bolster the McCain Campaign's argument that it is biased and partisan. 2)Both French and Branchflower gave a time frame of when the investigation was to be completed BEFORE Palin was announced to be McCain's running mate. If he had been allowed to interview these witnesses, as had initially been agreed to by the liar, Sarah Palin, and her lapdog, Colberg, the investigation would be complete and turned in according to the schedule. 3) Try to follow this one (it may be difficult): The FACT is that the entire investigation was started before anyone knew that Palin was going to be the Republican VP nominee. To say that anyone foresaw that would be ridiculous. The sound of the collective jaw of Alaskans hitting the floor resonated through the state when the announcement was made. 4) The unsubstantiated statements that the Obama Campaign was involved or that Monagan is assaultive are so outlandish they aren't even worth answering. Although, I will make the point that it has been firmly established that Palin HAS brought in outsiders to keep us Alaskans under control. 5) Monagan understood something that neither you nor Palin were able to grasp. He would have violated the law by firing Wooten. Wooten had been investigated, disciplined, and the case was closed. Any additional punitive action would have invited a substantiated lawsuit. Monagan did not retain Wooten out of a flawed sense of loyalty. A flawed sense of loyalty would be when state employees violate the law to cover for their governor's illegal behavior. Monagan retained Wooten to protect himself, the Governor, and the state. And, after due process had been completed, it was the right thing to do. 6) You claim the report will contain "strong language about 'gross misuse of power' and 'abuse of authority' but will not have any actual evidence. The whole report will be a strong case of connect the dots: 'See, Sarah got mad...." This sounds an awful lot like the "conclusive evidence" that Palin's corrupt mouthpiece used when launching the smear campaign against Monagan. 7) Your foretelling of the future is apparently based on some fantasy that you indulge in. You don't even know that, because of his age, McCain has said he will only serve as president for one term if elected. Keep on fantasizing. It is the only shred of hope you have for your idol. Whether she is elected or not, everyone in the country knows she is a failure. Although I consider myself independent, I have always voted Republican. This election will mark a change in direction for me and many many others.
