The story in the Anchorage Daily News this morning and some comments posted on this blog require some additional comments and explanations for my readers.

The Daily News Story:

In the story this morning, Governor Palin offered the following comments about Trooper Mike Wooten:

"Based on what I know of trooper Wooten and his threat to kill a person, saying they will 'eat an f'in bullet,' and you know he said this with a gun on his hip; knowing of his drinking in a patrol car, knowing of his illegally killing of the moose, knowing of his Tasering I believe at that time his 11-year-old stepson; knowing of his verbal abuse of minors, my daughter. ... I would question any trooper driving a car where the logo is printed on the side of that car being 'integrity, (loyalty, and courage')."

In response I'd like to share with my readers the other side of the story that I heard first hand while speaking with Wooten for several hours in the course of reviewing these documents.

The alleged threat to kill a person was found to be unsubstantiated by the Trooper Investigator.

The Allegation about drinking in his patrol car was initially found to be unsubstantiated by the Trooper investigator. After the investigation was complete, Colonel Julia Grimes took the unprecedented steps of reopening the closed complaint. In doing so, she only interviewed one set of witnesses, and then changed the findings. This was unprecedented.

The allegation of taking a moose illegally has to be the most ironic. In 2003, Wooten his wife Molly (Palin's sister) and a friend were boating up the Yenta River when they spotted a moose. Since Molly had the permit, he told her to shoot the moose. She refused, so Wooten shot the moose himself.

Two years later, when the Palin's filed the complaint against Wooten taking the moose illegally, he admitted it right away.

The irony is that Palin's father actually butchered the moose in his garage, and then after Wooten paid to have the meat processed, he shared the bounty between Todd and Sarah Palin and her father.

So although Sarah apparently has an issue with Wooten shooting a moose illegally, she certainly didn't have a problem eating the ill gotten gains and then filing a complaint two years later.

On the tasering incident, the situation occurred one night after Wooten got home from work and had his equipment by the door. His son kept asking him if he could see what it felt like. Wooten, (and this was verified by me with someone who was there) laid out pillows all over the floor and set the device on the lowest possible setting.

This doesn't make it safe or right, but it's important to understand the context instead of just reading the guy tasered his ten year old son. More importantly, Wooten admitted to it immediately and was suspended for his actions.

And as far as verbally abusing children, nothing has ever been substantiated.

My Role

While I will undoubtedly take some criticism for running the story on Trooper Mike Wooten, it was one I felt compelled to tell. Without this story being broken, Wooten would have continued to endure a relentless hounding. The hope is now that he can get on with his life, his kids and his career and not have to worry about any coordinated attempts with baseless allegations.

When I first started crafting my blog about Walt Monegan's firing, I was sticking to the budget angle. I have heard the rumors about Wooten since Monegan's mystery firing but never pursued that route. It wasn't until I was encouraged to speak with Wooten and then sat down with him for over three hours going through his file and then verifying his claims through my sources.

While some will continue to call it sour grapes the fact is anytime I raise an issue about Governor Palin they same the same thing. The records released yesterday show a clear pattern of Palin and her family dogging Wooten. In fact there are a number of items I became aware regarding their behavior that I didn't print.

As a blogger, my posts are a mixture of opinion and facts and I leave it to my readers to sort it out.

However having said that, I stand by everything in my story about Trooper Mike Wooten. The facts are there...feel free to decide for yourself.

re: Ms. Palin's Hypocritical Viewpoint

Ms. Palin's choice to allow her son to eavesdrop on a conversation and in an atmosphere that is obviously NOT appropriate for a 16-year-old is not a healthy or educated one. No parent should willingly and knowingly put their child in this situation. A thought occurred to me while pondering this issue: In my opinion, it seems somewhat hypocritical for Ms. Palin to judge Mr. Wooten's equally uneducated choice of demonstrating the taser on his step-son (just as it was hypocritical for her and/or her family to partake of illegally obtained moose. But, I digress...) The difference is that Mr. Wooten honestly believed that his choice would not be detrimental to the child. I am very thankful that the step-son did not earn a lethal consequence due to his step-dad's ignorance. However, Ms. Palin adamantly believed Mr. Wooten to be a "loose cannon" (her words) and yet she STILL willingly put her son's mental health at risk. Even if it was just for the "extramarital affair" reason, as they said -- this is not a situation a wise decision-making woman willingly asks her son to join. And for you readers unsure of what her 16-year-old son, Track, allegedly overheard his uncle say to his aunt, I will quote Ms. Palin for you here: "I will kill him.[referring to Track's maternal grandfather] He'll eat a f****** lead bullet. I'll shoot him." Only the parties involved know what else he may have heard. The pain between the taser-gun and overhearing your uncle's desires to kill your grandfather may be immeasurable -- but I can make an educated guess as to which is longer lasting. It makes me wonder about her decision-making skills on other matters. Just my musings... ...do what you wish with them. Most sincerely, A Mother of 6 Wonderful Kids (Texas)

Trooper Wooten "investigation"

Andrew Halcro, you ought to be ashamed of yourself and your sophomoric behavior. As you have stated, a lot of what goes on in a divorce is a he said she said situation, and I don't think you really thought about that before you decided to spout off. There is so much more to this situation than what you have highlighted. During the election I was impressed by you and what you said and stood for, if you had been running against anyone other than Sarah Palin I would have supported you, as it was I was more impressed and impassioned by Sarah. I was excited by your ideas and energy also though and I was looking forward to watching you politically and possibly supporting you in the future. I defiantly thought of you as an "up and coming". Now after your little ranting episode I see you differently. I am no longer interested in supporting a sore loser. That is how I see you now, a sore loser who is lashing out and throwing barbs. It really is a shame, I thought you were so much more than that.

Andrew's Response:

Ashamed? Yeah...I'm ashamed I helped uncover a serious abuse of power after the governor denied it.

At least I'm not a liar.

Wooten was a real jerk. If I

Wooten was a real jerk. If I was in her position, I would do everything I can to protect my children and my family. The problem is you moron Democraps would give dangerous people a chance first and cry at your family member's funeral later. You people have no sense of family.

Once again, when you run for

Once again, when you run for governor and need some assistance in the Matanuska Valley region, give me a call. 351-2360 Nice job bringing the hypocrisy of the Palin administration to light. Eric Feige

Beyond Reason

Wow! Andrew, I often read your blog with amazement at how educated you've become with State government issues. I try to read beyond the "Palin's the devil" remarks that are insinuated in your writing and professed by the majority of your bloggers. It can be a real turn off to those of us that just want the facts. But I have say, that especially with this issue, you may have let the dislike that is burning in your belly put a smoke cloud in your mind. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with your assesment of why Gov. Palin fired Monegan, but what I'm concerned about is your defense of Wooten. I don't know the man personally, as you seem to, but I would have to say that where there is smoke there is fire. These allegations are serious! Unfounded or not, they are serious. I know for a fact that if a member of your family tasered your daughter (even if she were begging for it) you would think that was a bit off kilter, and you would be angry. I realized he confessed to it and was punished, but what's the mindset??? Who does that kind of thing? That's like giving your kids meth at home so they'll know better than to take it from a stranger. Andrew, I know I will be crucified by your readers for for even questioning you on this, but do you really believe that Wooten is completely fit to be an officer of the State of Alaska? And are you really defending his actions?

Andrew's Response:

Please, never be afraid to question anything I post here.

I'm not condoning or defending Wooten actions. Anyone who has been through a divorce knows a lot of what is said is he said she said and it's very hard to prove and very rarely are there two angels involved.

As I wrote about the taser incident, it wasn't safe or right.

The background on the divorce was just to set the table to explain the where we are today. Wooten's story is compelling because of the long history of complaints against him by a family that is politically connected.

In fact yesterday at the PSEA press conference, the comment was made by John Cyr that he had never seen such a long list of complaints filed by the same people against the same officer.

The one thing I regret about the blog is I didn't make it entirely clear. It was never to take sides in a very messy divorce, but to raise the issue that there was some undue influence being put on the Department of Public Safety to punish him.

This story has just begun to be told and now we will move from the story of a messy divorce to the real story which is the abuse of power by certain government officials.

Missed it

What about the investigation by the Troopers which concluded that Wooten was drinking and driving? Doesn't that bother you at all? This is a guy who is supposed to enforce the laws who is flagrantly and willfully violating that very same law? I guarantee you if I knew one of my in-laws was doing that around my nieces or nephews in the manner that the Palins/Heaths allege I would do everything in my power to get them punished. It is unreal the outrage you have for Palin but not for Wooten. How can you possibly defend this scumbag? I didn't vote for her but this witch hunt you are constantly on is getting real old.

Andrew's Response:

I can assure you that I wouldn;t have posted such a blog if I didn;t have absolute faith in my sources. Say what you will, but this is no witch hunt.

As for Wooten, I am not defending his violations. In fact this has nothing to with him or his divorce. It has everything to do with what has become more and more apparent from the initial blog posting that this is a serious case of abuse of power.

If you think this is a witch hunt....this has just begun and I'm not going to be the one hunting.

Abuse of Power

It is amazing to me that one family should get away with being able to make so many allegation against one Trooper. This Trooper, just happens to be my son. I was always under the empression Michael was married to Molly, not Sara Palin, yet Sara seems to be the one doing all the accusing in this case. Did Molly not know how to handle her own divorce, does she still have to go to the family to clean up after her? Does the Governor of Alaska and her husband not have better things to do,than spy on my son, like looking out after the state of Alaska? My son is a good father and he loves his children, I think Molly McCann should handle her own affairs and leave her family out of it. It is time to grow up Molly. Life is not easy get use to it. You can not always have your way.

So you are okay with the drinking and driving part?

According to the March 1 2006 letter from Col. Grimes to Wooten, they found the allegations of his drinking and driving his Trooper car to be substantiated, to the point that she referred to it as showing a "lack of judgement and a profound disrespect for the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer." How is it you can read that and say the accusation of drinking and driving were "unsubstantiated?"

Andrew's Response:

I'm not okay with drinking and driving, I'm not okay with tasering and I'm not okay with harassing people.

The allegation against Wooten for drinking and driving was changed by Col. Grimes after the initial investigator ruled that the complaint was unsubstantiated. Grimes took an unprecendented action in reversing the findings of a closed complaint and she did so only after interviewing one witness.

But that isn't the real story here...nor is the divorce, nor are the rest of the complaints.

The real story is the undue influence being brought down upon the DPS to punish Wooten. The pressure that came from the governor's office to fire Wooten.

In the next few days you will see what I mean.

My blog was simply the icebreaker...now others will take over.

Come on. Quit shooting at the messenger

Let up on Andrew already. He has not condoned anything. He has just reported the facts. Andrew- I am sorry you have to keep repeating yourself. Don’t stop – please. I am even more sorry for those who blindly support Sarah and cannot recognize that ugly (vindictive, dishonest, manipulative, vane, shallow,...) goes clear to the bone.

Crickets

So just wondering where my post is? The one that wonders how your ego fits in this state. Apparently to you the head of the Troopers at the time must have been somehow faulty because she only interviewed the homeowners, coincedentally, the only people besides Wooten who were there. Who else was she supposed to have interviewed? And what is your justification for saying her method was unprecendented, meaning no other trooper investigation had ever interviewed only one person? Are you an investigator for the troopers in a past life?

How does your ego fit in Alaska?

Good thing we live in the largest state in the union so it can fit. All you have presented is allegations. Now you are alleging that somehow because Col. Grimes interviewed only one set of witnesses (the only ones available) her findings must be suspect. Who else are they supposed to interview? Nobody else was there! They have Wooten's statement, and then they interview the homeowners. Duh! You should have said the real story is the "allleged undue influence" because that's all it is. I know you aren't a lawyer so that may not be important to you, but it's all just alleged, even though you believe it to be the gospel.

How does one ask for an official Legislative investigation Andre

What is the process to ask for the Senate or House of Reps. to begin an official inquiry into this matter. It seems the truth will not be told if an independent body doesn't do an inquiry. The breach of personnel documents, although they are investigative documents by a government official is a serious offense if true. So Andrew please advise us where the general public must go to ask for an unbiased hearing or investigation to happen.

Andrew's Response:

Email your legislators and ask for an independent investigation.

Thank you for getting this

Thank you for getting this out to the public. Keep it coming Andrew, the public needs your help to get someone to get an official inquiry going. We need the truth.

LET'S GET BACK TO THE FIRING.....

If we can throw all this other stuff out the window and just look at the unprofessional way she had Walt fired. The poor guy only had an audience with her for 45 minutes in 19 months? What kind of communication is this with one of your top commissioners? Then...for whatever reason.....she does the cowardly thing...sends someone to fire him while she is in DC? She must have been expecting Walt to quietly take the demotion and there would have been little to no press? This woman, if she were the CEO of a corporation would have ben fired by the board long ago over terrible decisions she has made on the fly. She has no communication skills whatsoever. She pulls knee jerk reactions all the time without thinking of the fallout. Let's have Dittman do a popularity poll right now, eh? Sarah, dear.....you are slippin' and sliddin'. We are worried about the next two years with you at the helm. God help us all.

I think her statement is a bit broken...

Oops. As often happens with ADN, they've made a mistake. Let me fix this. 'On Thursday, the voters held little regard for Governor Palin. They said they do not believe Palin has what it takes to be a dog catcher, let alone a governor. "Based on what I know of Governor Palin and her promise to be open and transparent and committed to public safety, yet cutting spending for the troopers while simultaneously funding an $866,000.00 kitchen for a for-profit sports complex that was built in Wasilla on someone else's land which ended up costing the taxpayers $1.7 million dollars, knowingly writing a craptacular piece of legislation called ACES which simultaneously raised oil taxes 400% and all but completely eliminated oil exploration on state land (Liberty, anyone?), knowingly and willfully handing over $500 million to a company that has neither the resources, the capital or experience to build the largest gas line in the world and putting us at risk for three times that amount when, to fill the gas line we have to go to the people who actually *have* the gas, and knowingly and spitefully having some lackey fire a man with more than 30 years of law enforcement experience because she'd rather hire a man to take the state in a new direction, which as far as I can tell, just means that he ran out of women to victimize in Kenai... I would question any person in such a position of power, especially one who ran on a platform of 'integrity, (loyalty and courage')."

Thanks for your work

Thanks for your work bringing some light to the mystery of Monegan's untimely fireing. I know that you will be enduring personal attacks by Sarah's supporters for questioning their "Goddess" for any unholy motives. I am shocked by some of the comments remarking about it being "none of our business what she does." Hopefully your investigation will help clarify the real issues regarding this situation. It's sad that Sarah's "open and transparent" administration has come to this.

If I recall correctly

If I recall correctly Governor Palin admitted to two commercial fishing violations during the campaign - contrast violating fish and game laws for profit versus violating them for food - amazing how after 2000 years of listening to the parable (John 8:1-11) people are still willing to throw the first stone.
