Hello Andrew, I have been thinking about contacting you for quite some time. Then I remember the Malcolm Forbes quote: "Be charry of giving advice, fools won't heed it and smart people don't need it". I consider you very smart but I'm going to risk it anyway. I agree with you that the Republican party has lost its focus on fiscal responsibility both nationally and locally. I have been a Republican for so many years it took me a while to realize the criticisms you were leveling at the leadership when you were in the legislature and since were true intead of an "upstart trying to steal the show". Your analysis of this Governor and AGIA are mine exactly....but the purpose of this e-mail is to offer you some constructive crticism. I would like to see you elected to public office in the executive (Mayor, Governor) because I too think the economic future of Alaska looks pretty bleak and we are going to need strong leadership. In one of the debates or interviews leading up to the election last year I remember hearing you say you didn't run for re-election to the legislature because "you didn't enjoy working with people who didn't know what day of the week it was" ..or something to that effect. Having worked with legislators myself, I can understand your sentiments but I wondered at the time why you would say something like that in a public forum. After all, should you have been elected governor you would require those same "idiots" to vote to fund your programs. Next, I am not sure that referencing your business experience the way you have in ads helps you. The feeling expressed to me by many is: "Halcro inherited his Dad's business, he didn't make it on his own". The value I am sure you added gets lost. In addition, when you criticize the actions of others, for example Palin, you bore in with so many facts and figures, before you are done one has the feeling you are trying to destroy. I think you should run for Mayor when the big spender Begich is done. There is a vacuum there for sure. This would give you an opportunity to show your manangement skills and add to your support group. Bottom line: You can be the smartest but what good is it if you don't get a chance to implement: * Soften the tone and don't make comments that offend unnecessarily *Speak of the value you have added and make the working man comfortable with your success *Instead of attacking opposing points of view with a "you are dead wrong" tone, use phrases like "wouldn't it be more plausible...."; " another way to approach the problem......"; " I respectfully disagree..." In conclusion, I think you are very bright and I think you would be courageous to do the right thing, the logical thing, but I think you need to work hard on your political skills. You need to get there FIRST. Respectfully sbmitted, Will Gay
