Dead Man Walking: Exit Colberg

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

(2/10/09) Rumors are abound about the sudden resignation of Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg. While much is speculation, some of the theories seem to have some credibility.

Colberg's initial appointment two years ago was a complete surprise as he came into state government from a small private practice with no political experience and ended up in a highly charged political environment.

The fallout from the Troopergate subpoena fiasco has taken its toll on a guy whom all would agree is highly ethical.

There are feelings that Colberg was forced to chart the Troopergate course he did because of political pressure to stall and obfuscate the investigation.

After all, when you factor in the dramatic reversal Colberg took after agreeing in writing to cooperate with Senator Kim Elton and then abruptly went back on his word; then the absolute drubbing the court gave him with his legal challenge, there seems to have been someone else pulling the strings.

But while Governor Palin in an interview today with the Anchorage Daily News said the reason for Colberg's departure was due to the "harsh political environment," created by legislators and the Troopergate investigation, one really has to wonder about his final goodbye email to his employees.

Good Morning:

It was an honor to serve with you.  Effective immediately, Mr. Rick Svobodny is the acting Attorney General until otherwise directed by the Governor or her office.

Thank you.

Talis J. Colberg

Colberg's good bye couldn't have been more curt. He is leaving on his own free will but yet this is all he says after being their boss for two years?

Even former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, who was unceremoniously fired by Palin, offered gracious thanks and good will to his former employees.

Look for Palin's next Attorney General to be a pit bull.

The way things are shaping up, she's going to need someone aggressive.

Andrew,

It's a cold day you-know-where when I disagree with you. We must have slightly differing ethical standards since I disagree with this statement: "The fallout from the Troopergate subpoena fiasco has taken its toll on a guy whom all would agree is highly ethical." Highly ethical? How? A highly ethical person would have stood up at the very beginning and said, "Whoa, wait a minute! This is wrong and I'm not participating." The very fact that he went along with something he probably knew was wrong from the beginning demonstrates a lack of ethics in my book. I don't care who he was getting pressured by, it was wrong! How we behave or act under pressure is more telling of our character than during less difficult times. IMO Colberg is as unethical as the rest of the Palin cartel.

Twilight Zone

Andrew, OK here is a scenario: About 2 weeks ago during a closed staff meeting Todd & Gov Palin raised an idea, since the Trooper-gate issue was being brought into focus again. Now we blame Talis Colberg for Trooper-gate mishandling and shift focus to him for the legislators and media to grab. Talis is a liability and can’t be trusted so we need to cut him out of the loop. Think about it folks with Talis gone this will be a dead issue and the media and Legislators will have nothing to go on & we can also can blame the legislators. First we wait until the start of Iron Dog so Sarah & I will be out of town like when firing Walt. Then we have “someone” on Monday notify him he is FIRED (oops I mean “has resigned”) but let him know he better keep his mouth shut or no kind words or recommendations from the boss! During this meeting other names were bantered about who need to be watched for questioned loyalties like un-named gas line hindrances see your past blog. This is a scenario it is only a scenario from the Atwood building twilight zone…

I'm making my prediction now...

...Wayne Anthony Ross as the next Attorney General!

Colberg seems to have left

Colberg seems to have left his ethics on the side of the road when he joined up with GIMO (Governor in name only) Palin. I have always felt the law applies to ALL of us, and Colberg indicated (for whatever reason) that some of us can "choose" which laws to obey. Last I heard, if Congress issues you a subpoena, you don't have the right to refuse. You do have the right to not incriminate yourself, but you have to appear. That's how I feel about Legislative subpoenas. Those that were issued subpoenas should have appeared, as required by law.

Palin's next AG

Who would take the job, that is the question. Any respectable lawyer in Alaska will run from it like a scalded dog.
