Enter John Binkley

The biggest thing that surprised me about Republican John Binkley entering the race is the way in which he has entered the race.
Since June of 2005, when asked about his future intentions he has repeated the same answer. I think Governor Murkowski is doing a good job and I'd seriously consider running if he doesn't seek re-election (sic)
Today, even though Governor Murkowski hasn't announced his plans for re-election, Binkley has formally announced he's running. What happened?
Rumors and political watchers say this is a public move by the Republican party faithful who are desperate to push Governor Murkowski out of the picture. With dismal approval ratings and a refusal to reveal his 2006 intentions, his indecision is costing the GOP time and money in cultivating a viable candidate.
The party is fearful of letting other GOP primary candidates like Sarah Palin or a Loren Leman getting to far out ahead of the crowd.
A recent poll revealed that in a head to head match up, Murkowski would lose to former Governor Knowles 42-22. Some have suggested that the release of these unflattering poll results were to publicly show the current governor had a slim chance of being re-elected.
The question is with these very public displays of opposition, how will Governor Murkowski respond to challengers?
With a gasline agreement talks in a holding pattern, the Governor is stalled from his exit strategy. Without a gasline, he will be fondly remembered for things no political figure wants to be remembered for. With a gasline deal that wins legislative approval, he potentially has a legacy to hang his hat on.
In the meantime, he'll continue to be the topic of speculation until he stands up and announces his intentions for 2006.
As far as Binkley's entrance I think it's good for Alaskans. I think this coming election year Alaskans need to hear from a wide range of voices from candidates with a wide range of experience.
As is the case in many political races, there will be contenders as well as pretenders.
Here's to the Future!
