The Farmers Song...Sad...and ...True:
I just drove by the new Creamery Cooperative on the corner of Trunk and Bogard in Palmer/Wasilla. There are EIGHT MATANUSKA MAID TRAILERS AND A MATANUSKA MAID TRUCK" in the parking lot. Word is...they have stripped the downtown Matanuska Maid Plant over the past three days. They took the Homogenizer, the Filler, the Lab Equipment, Lifts, and more...See KTUU 2/8/08 report.
Some estimates are around 1.5 to 2 million taken?
It is my understanding that a few items filmed in the KTUU report were requested in a bid for proposal in an OPEN letter to the Creamery Corporation and The Board of Agriculture and Conservation. In the letter of intent a large sum of money was offered for some of the above equipment. The state could have recovered some cash flow in order to pay the only shareholder (The State of Alaska's) debts down. ADN Money reported this bid amount, unbelievably!
I think that we would all like to see agriculture succeed in Alaska. Especially, we would like to see our dairy farmers move forward and take stock in their livelihood as farmers. However, if you are going to offer or give away State Assets as a subsidy to the Farmers, this needs to be done in an open and TRANSPARENT atmosphere.
The concern I have regarding disposal of State Assets are, if they are over 1000.00, a public process is mandated by state statute. The behavior and actions of this BAC and Creamery Board have made our state quite vulnerable to potential Lawsuits. The problem is the current board has set up a legal situation that may cost us, the citizens of Alaska, a lot of money. So here we are..."I want the same opportunity to bid on these items or receive the same "lease option to buy...options, by Joe Citizen." Something funny is going on here. It is reminiscent of the original bankruptcy more than 24 years ago. And again today, one of these farmers is still involved...
This is somewhat ironic. The States Asset Manager is Ray Nix. He reports directly to the Division of Agriculture Head, who is Franci Havermeister. This person is the daughter-in law of the farmer who is the recipient of the above-mentioned equipment in an amount in excess of 1 to 1 & 1/2 million dollars. Again, we want them to succeed, however, this disposal of the States Assets must be monitored in an open and transparent forum. Those who wish to participate in the process should be allowed to do so.
In addition, the blame game for agricultures downfall or putting this sad situation on prior management of Matanuska Maid must go out the window. Experts agree that Mat Maid was doomed. I would like to see this administration agree. Get over the small town politics and get on the same page!
So much could be accomplished with the talents of Division of Agriculture & the Creamery Board, the past Ad Hoc Committees, the Farmers, the new Co-Operative, and yes, dialogue with management who didn't have the luxury of state funding or lines of credit to keep money flowing into the Alaska Economy, yet, kept Matanuska Maid going for so many years...Think of the possibilities.
Think of what these folks could deliver for Alaska's Economy. Enough said.
