On Tuesday, Governor Sarah Palin's appointed Attorney General sent a letter to state Sen. Hollis French, the Democrat overseeing the "Troopergate" investigation, and asked that the subpoenas that were issued last week to comple testimony be withdrawn.

Attorney General Talis Colberg also stated the employees would refuse to appear unless either the full state Senate or the entire Legislature votes to compel their testimony.

According to Colberg, the employees are caught between their respect for the Legislature and their loyalty to the governor, who initially agreed to cooperate with the inquiry but has increasingly opposed and has attempted to delay it since beoming John McCain's running mate.

"This is an untenable position for our clients because the governor has so strongly stated that the subpoenas issued by your committee are of questionable validity," Colberg wrote.

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed 13 people. They include 10 employees of Palin's administration and three who are not: her husband, Todd Palin; John Bitney, Palin's former legislative liaison who now is chief of staff for Republican House Speaker John Harris; and Murlene Wilkes, a state contractor.

This is quite a change of tune for Colberg, who just a month ago came under questions for talking to potential witnesses ahead of special investigator Steve Branchflower.

Both Palin and Colberg stated at the time he was gathering evidence to hand over to Branchflower for the investigation.

However today, four weeks later, both Colberg and Palin are questioning the validity of the investigation.

Also on Tuesday, the McCain campaign rolled out what they're calling their "Truth Squad", which consists of former Palin spokesperson Meg Stapleton and a New York lawyer named Ed O'Callahan.

During there initial press conference they claimed that Democratic State Senator Hollis French, manipulated the witness list by leaving off the name of Palin's former Chief of Staff Mike Tibbles.

However they were wrong; Franch had nothing to do with leaving Tibbles name of the list. The move was made by Republican Representative Jay Ramras who felt that Tibbles should be left off because he is now in the private sector and doesn't have the advantage of a state lawyer to defend himself.

So on their first day, the McCain truth squad came up with a false accusation.

So just for the record, we'll share the actual truth with the Meg and Ed about this investigation so they'll know better next time:

Lawmakers seek outside inquiry of Monegan firing - KTUU-TV – July 18, 2008:

Some lawmakers are asking for more answers to the reasons Palin had for firing Monegan. Palin, in Wasilla for the Governor’s Picnic, said she would not fight such an effort to look into this matter by an independent investigator.

“We would never prohibit, or be less than enthusiastic about any kind of investigation. Let’s deal in the facts, and you do that via investigation,” Palin said.

Senate will look into Monegan firing - KTUU-TV – July 19, 2008:

While the governor said there is no need for an investigation from an outside investigator, she said she will answer any questions from lawmakers, media and the public.

Public Safety already headed in ‘new direction,’ some say - Anchorage Daily News - July 22, 2008:

The governor denies any wrongdoing, and says she welcomes any questions on the matter.

Palin under fire – Legislature appears poised to appoint investigator -Aftermath of Monegan Dismissal, Anchorage Daily News - July 22, 2008:

“I’ve said all along, hold me accountable,” Palin told reporters in Juneau. “And I’m telling the truth when I say there was never pressure put on Commissioner Monegan.”

Lawmakers move to investigate Monegan ouster, KTUU-TV – July 24, 2008:

The governor says she welcomes the investigation. “I have absolutely nothing to hide and am happy to answer any questions,” she said. “I’m happy to answer any questions between now and when they do conduct an investigation also.”

Gov. Palin said last weekend that she did not think an independent investigator was needed. “That being the route that they choose, then so be it,” she said. “I’m happy to comply, to cooperate. I have absolutely nothing to hide. No problem with an independent investigation.”

Hired help will probe Monegan dismissal - $100,000: Legislators vote to have independent investigator look into controversial firing - Anchorage Daily News –July 29, 2008:

“The governor has said all along that she will fully cooperate with an investigation and her staff will cooperate as well,” Leighow said.

Branchflower to investigate in Monegan firing - KTUU-TV – August 1, 2008:

“I’ve heard (Branchflower’s) name, or course, over the years in Alaska,” Palin said. “I know he’s a prosecutor, probably a heavy duty prosecutor, and so that kind of puzzles us why we are going down that road when we are very, very open to answering any questions anybody has of me or administrators.”

PRESS RELEASE: GOVERNOR TO TURN OVER FINDINGS - Office of the Governor – August 13, 2008:

Governor Palin has directed all her staff to cooperate fully with Branchflower.

Palin administration cooperating with investigator - KTUU-TV – August 15, 2008:

Lawmakers had wanted to know if Steve Branchflower needed them to issues subpoenas to require witnesses to talk to him about Gov. Sarah Palin’s decision to fire Monegan and about the actions of her staffers. But State Sen. Hollis French says the meeting was cancelled because there’s no need for subpoenas at this point.

Palin aide Frank Bailey placed on administrative leave - KTUU-TV – August 19, 2008:

“We figured, if there is an investigation going on with an unknown outcome – we don’t know exactly what (special investigator) Mr. Branchflower is going to conclude – that Mr. Bailey just needed to step away from the situation, although be available to the investigator,” [Palin spokesman] McAllister said. The governor’s office also says that Bailey will cooperate fully with the investigation.

Palin aide put on leave in firing flap, BAILEY: Official who made all inquiring about trooper taken “out of the mix.” - Anchorage Daily News – August 20, 2008:

Spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said that with Bailey still a state employee, Palin “can direct him to assist Mr. Branchflower, thereby fulfilling her pledge to Alaskans to cooperate fully with the investigation.”

Re: Governor Palin and Trooper Investigation - McCain Campaign Press Release – August 30, 2008:

Governor Palin is an open book on this – she did nothing wrong and has nothing to hide. As a reformer and a leader on ethics reform, she has been happy to cooperate fully in the inquiry of this matter.

Attorney challenges Monegan firing inquiry – Anchorage Daily News – September 2, 2008:

He [Governor Palin’s Lawyer Mr. Van Flein] said the governor’s office welcomes the inquiry and will cooperate. Palin has made repeated public statements that she’ll cooperate, and that hasn’t changed at this point, Van Flein says.

Yes, I have a question: Why

Yes, I have a question: Why does Republican Ramras say he left Tibbles off the subpoena list when Branchflower says it was French? http://townhall.com/columnists/AmandaCarpenter/2008/09/13/obama_partisan_tampers_with_palin_subpoena_list Lawmakers approved 13 of Branchflower’s subpoena requests that day, which included one for Palin’s husband, Todd. Four other subpoenas were approved for aides Branchflower believes participated in a meeting called by Palin’s former chief of staff Mike Tibbles where Wooten’s firing was allegedly discussed. Rep. David Guttenberg (D.) asked Branchflower why he was requesting subpoenas for only those people attending the meeting and not Tibbles himself. Branchflower said he would “have to defer that question to Mr. French.” “I put the list together with, talking to Mr. French,” Branchflower added. Sen. Gene Therriault (R.) told Branchflower, “I don’t understand why you would have to defer that question to Sen. French. If it’s your list you’re in complete control of the list, then why can’t you answer the question?” Branchflower had no explanation. He only offered, “I’m not sure why his name was removed. My initial request was to have him on the list.” At that point, French interjected. “It appeared to me there wasn’t the political will to subpoena Tibbles.” “Something’s fishy here,” Therriault replied. “I mean either Mr. Branchflower conducts his investigation without direction, and now we know he’s been directed on the date and changing what he’s doing and how he’s doing it because of the time pressure he is feeling. And now we’re hearing that people that he’s trying to get information from, there’s direction going on on that, too.”

Wow Andrew I didn't know you had it in you!

According to Meg you spearheaded this take-down. Boy, are they grasping at straws! I like how they are linking this all to Obama supporters when this all started before Palin was selected as VP. Definitely written by a McCain speechwriter, but Meg has lost her pizzazz (for fear of being fired like Monegan??) Oh, and by the way, this is not about Wooten - even though she couldn't help but convict him again publicly (again with personal information only the family would know.)

question

Andrew, didn't the AG declare conflict of interest, hence the hiring of Van Flein? Now he's back in? Wasn't there a little witness tampering talk sprinkled in? Something don't sound right.

Well, Alaska is quickly

Well, Alaska is quickly becoming a total embarrassment of a state. All this just reinforces how CORRUPT and provincial the government is up there. Those AIP and hicksville roots are just too deep.

Palen no longer serving Alaska

Palen has moved on-she is no longer serving Alaska. Andrew's succinct listing of quotes from the Governor beginning with her promise of full cooperation to her current stonewalling clearly shows the evolution of Palen's allegiance from serving Alaska to serving McCain. She has drunk the koolaide and gone over to the dark side...

?

Where did you find out it was Ramras that wanted Tibbles off the list? I'm not questioning it, just would like to know.

Attorney General

What is wrong with him. Oh yea that's right - He was not qualified for the job of Attorney General. He qualified because he was friends with her. Who is supposed to provide oversight to these people. I almost hope she wins so she will take all these corrupt liars with her. Let's see Meg, Annette, Frank, Tollis, Bill, - hell take everyone and let's start over.

afraid of what's coming

Palin was an open book because she had been assured by incompetent counsel - namely Colberg and Van Klein, that she had nothing to fear - unfortunately they not only failed to provide her with accurate advise - as she has violated so many state statutes that it's not funny, but they also failed to see the liability they have opened themselves up to. It amazes me that people held to know the law haven't got a clue. by the way Andrew - what exactly is your criteria for sensoring comments on this board? I would expect better from you - particularly given that you don't exactly keep your comments to subjects that don't offend.

Web

Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive! Please someone put a cork the "Truth Squad" More like the "Brute Squad" from "The Princess Bride"

You get what you pay for....

...Alaska needs to raise the pay to about $150,000 per year for legislators to weed out the idiots.

No offense but that usually

No offense but that usually has the opposite effect on weeding out idiot legislators.

even more ridiculous...

Well, I'm not surprised that this whole matter has taken an even more perverse turn. "Loyalty to the Governor..."? Puhleeze. I won't be the least bit surprised if they manage to tie this up (in the courts, most likely) until after the election. Pray hard that you win this election, Sarah. If you don't (and after all these games you and your posse have been playing) the turnaround will be fair play.

Chairman Halcro

Andrew - I think you should be the Chairman of the Truth Squad!

Palinphoney

For the life of me, I can't understand why Palin is turning this into such a firestorm when all she has to do is simply co-operate. Back in August, all she had to do was make a statement that perhaps Monegan "misinterpreted" the situation and apologize. And why is the McCain campaign now handling this for her? What do they have to do wth this?

McCain/Palin

Looks like the McCain Campaign took over, because they want to cover-up any possible wrong-doings by the Gov. and "First Dude". McCain/Bush/Cheney have never liked the truth, and block it with every means. This really gets tiresome. The laws do not pertain to elected officials, only to regular people on the street.

Stephen Colbert said it best

Stephen Colbert said it best on Monday night. Bush-Cheney hated answering questions. The change youget with McCain-Palin is that you will not be allowed to ASK questions.

What does the McCain

What does the McCain campaign have to do with this? In a nutshell: they know if the investigation goes forward, it's going to go very badly for Palin and she'll probably have to leave the ticket, and McCain's candidacy will implode. They will do anything to prevent that, and since the DOJ has been totally corrupted under Bush, they will. It will be interesting to see if the rule of law in Alaska is treated with the same contempt as it now is in the rest of the USA.

Alaska Politics haven't changed

It doesn't matter how many of the old GOP boys go to jail, things in Juneau are as sleazy as ever. Our transparent Governor is anthing but. The reason she doesn't cooperate, is that she will be exposed for abusing the office, and then worse yet, lying about it. The high powered lawyers from D.C. getting involved makes it look even more like business as usual in true Bush Administration fashion. The GOP has certainly lost it's way, and become the party of corruption, lies, and cover ups. Meg Stapleton's bulldog press conferences are an absolute joke. I wonder when jounalists sell out their intregrity? It must be the minute they sign on to be a politician's mouthpiece. She was more believable when she was getting beat up by the reindeer in North Pole.

Please, Alaska...

stand up to this corrupt governor and expose her lies and cover-up! Your country will forever be grateful to you.

Princess Palin NEVER apologizes..................

BUT she is an expert at playing the poor, poor "victim." She has a pattern of this that repeats time after time. Think about it folks.

She must be very, very guilty of something very, very bad

...if they are going to these extremes to achieve a coverup. I don't believe this is only about firing Monegan.

This has to be just the tip of the iceberg

...because stonewalling is the harder path; why is she taking it? There must be more to the persecution of Wooten than the custody battle. Supposedly he threatened to ruin the Palins. What does he know? As someone in law enforcement does he know something about the out of control kids?

McCain Campaign

What do they have to do with this? Well, they're probably trying to save their own asses after getting in so deep to the VP stuff without knowing what was going on here. Even though, up until the time that they got involved, it seemed like an easy, silly non-issue. All they've done is cast doubt on Palin. And convinced her to play along with their lies and attacks, which makes her look even worse. They're really doing a bang-up job, aren't they?

History Lesson

Nixon and Clinton both had similar moments in their executive tenures; Palin seems determined to follow them down the road to at least potential impeachment. That is, of course, unless she has no such simple out in her situation and has truly painted herself into a corner.

you ask why

Someone who goes on and on about not having anything to hide, and continually stands behind that. Then when it comes down to giving out what you know and what you got and flip a 180 and hide in anyway you can.... you have something serious you have to hide and are terrified it is going to come out in the open. With luck there is an email sitting around waiting to be discovered that says, "Get him fired now -Sarah" and a response that says "Working on it -who ever"
