Lawmakers to issue subpoenas in Troopergate

(ANCHORAGE) – Legislative leaders today announced that a joint House and Senate Judiciary Committee hearing will take place on Friday, September 12, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. in Anchorage to issue subpoenas in the ongoing investigation into the events surrounding the termination of former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.  They also set a date of October 10, 2008, for the completion of special counsel Stephen Branchflower’s report.

This week, seven key witnesses informed Mr. Branchflower through their attorneys that they would not provide depositions.  Their depositions, which had been agreed to and scheduled earlier with Mr. Branchflower, were cancelled within the last 72 hours.  Additionally, the Governor’s lawyer has stated that he represents the Governor and the Governor’s office, and has forbidden any contact by Mr. Branchflower with any member of that office.  Mr. Branchflower wishes to depose some of those employees.  The issuance of the subpoenas is intended to get at the truth and to expedite the completion of his report to the public.

House Judiciary Chairman Jay Ramras, R-Fairbanks, said that the reason for the earlier completion date for the report is to avoid the appearance of a last-minute ‘October surprise,’ and to give both sides plenty of time to respond to the contents of the report.  “I met with Mr. Branchflower on Wednesday, along with my vice-chair Representative Nancy Dahlstrom and Senator Hollis French.  We agreed that an earlier completion date was achievable, and that it was fair to all sides.   We are satisfied that the report can be finished by no later than October 10, 2008.”

Representative Ramras expressed confidence in Mr. Branchflower’s ability to produce a timely report.  “I just met the man for the first time Wednesday.  I was impressed.  He is organized and task-oriented.  He says he can get done ahead of schedule.  I believe him.”

“We also discussed and agreed amongst ourselves that no subpoena will be issued for the Governor,” said Representative Nancy Dahlstrom, R-Eagle River.  “She has told the public that she intends to cooperate with the investigation, indeed, she has told the public that she welcomes the investigation and I have every faith that she means it.  If necessary we can send Mr. Branchflower to wherever the Governor is, or she can give her statement to him over the telephone, whatever is most convenient for her.  We recognize that her schedule is extremely busy, and we want to accommodate that.”

Under Alaska law, a subpoena requiring the attendance of a witness before a standing committee may be issued by the chairman of a committee when authorized to do so by a majority of the membership of the committee and with the concurrence of the Senate President or of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“We had scheduled and then cancelled a joint House-Senate Judiciary hearing for Aug. 18, 2008, because at that time every witness that Mr. Branchflower contacted agreed to sit down and give a statement,” said Senator Hollis French, D-Anchorage.

Senator Charlie Huggins, R-Rural Mat-Su/Chugiak, the vice-chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also expressed his support for an earlier report.  “Clearly it is in the best interests of everyone to get the job done ahead of schedule,” said Senator Huggins.

Alaska

The Alaska legislature has embarrassed this life long Democrat, along with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank and all the left wing fruit cakes that have brought this once great party to be disgustingly out of touch with the country. I will not vote for Barack Hussein Obama. I am a combat wounded ex Marine that just can't stomach the present Democratic party.

Just Asking

I am in the lower 48 and I have been up all night reading the article and all the comments. When Gov. Palin was picked as the GOP VP, it was stated she had the highest rating of all governors in the US (80%). So, are these comments from the 20% Palin haters? Why did I not see more favorable comments if she is rated so high in Alaska? Just asking. I am an undecided voter. The comments were very insightful. Thanks to all of you all from Alaska who commented.

Great Question

What a great question. I'm sure for anyone looking North from the L48 this blog seems really odd after you have heard all of Sara's self promotion about her immense popularity. Well she is popular but not as much as she likes to pretend. She is after all a 100% populist. She is rarely if ever specific and tends to get by with vague references to things like the "will of the people" when faced with a hard issue or question. Our press is Alaska is horrible in a way those living elsewhere can not grasp. We have two dominent news outlets Channel 2 KTUU and the Anchorage Daily News Paper both funded and influenced from outside sources. In general both these news outlets are poor quality although KTUU invested in lots of expensive camera and broadcast so at least the lousy and bias news coverage is pretty pictures. Over the years they have leaned really hard left and had a great influence over our local elections. That is why here in Anchorage we have a Mayor and City Assembly who are completely left wing. We are drowning in property taxes and horrible local government but you will not find any reference on KTUU or in the Anchorage paper. Both of our Alaska news outlets realized how liberal Sara Palin really is in spite of her constantly screaming about being a conservative. As a result of her very liberal policies they have supported her in a way that boggles the mind. Not a single negative work spoken or in print for her first 18 months in office. She did not walk on water but rather about 2 feet above, hovering like an angel. This fits with Sara's populist approach, as long as people are saying nice things she is happy (no moral compass). There was hope about a month ago when John Tracy left as News director of KTUU but it appears his replacement Steve McDonald is just as liberal and bias. Hope this perspective helps.

Time with Branchflower? Yeah, right...

The Gov will be back in the state later this week...ABC announced a few more details about their upcoming interview with Palin: "But it turns out that she is spending much of Thursday and Friday with Gibson — at the ceremony in Fairbanks, Alaska, and at her home in Wasilla, Alaska. Campaign aides said the anchorman will get extensive, repeated access to Palin throughout her first trip home since becoming the nominee." http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13264.html But, will she find the time to talk with Branchflower?

Why is this a big deal?

I think Palin made a serious mistake and abused the power of her office in putting pressure on Monegan to fire her ex brother-in-law. And this activity also demonstrated a startling misunderstanding of the law and workers rights. Monegan would have opened the state up to a union lawsuit had he fired Wooten without due cause (documented evidence of improper behavior since the last disciplinary action). But had Sarah Palin been open and honest about all of this from the beginning, what would have been the outcome? A rebuke from the ethics board? A public apology? Greater oversight? The real issue here, as it often is with abuse of power, is that Palin lied repeatedly when confronted on this issue. And she made the mistake of saying things that could easily be disproven. The lying and the ongoing cover up (hiding emails, asking staff to not cooperate, etc...) are far more damning than the initial mistake.

Party First

I was listening to comments at the RNC Convention and it appeared the Republican delegation had a lot of talking points, but couldn't really answer questions concerning Gov. Palin's foreign policy experience. As a Republican, have you been asked to back off on raising questions about Gov. Palin's qualifications to be Vice President?

..Every day...and some of my emails are not so nice.

Party first

Amazing, that you have been asked to back off. Country First?? Freedom of Speech? America needs the truth, for a change. Thank you

McCain and Palin

McClatchy has this article, ... "McCain's history of hot temper raises concerns" I found this to be quite interesting: "About a year later, McCain reportedly erupted again, this time at a meeting with Arizona's then-Gov. Evan Mecham, who was about to be impeached after being indicted on felony charges. Karen Johnson, then Mecham's secretary and now an Arizona state senator, recalled how McCain told Mecham that he was "causing the party a lot of problems" and was an embarrassment to the party. "Sen. McCain got very angry," Johnson recalled, "and I said, 'Why are you talking to the governor like this? You're causing problems yourself. You're an embarrassment.' " Johnson would go on to work at three different jobs over the next five years, and she said that each time, McCain would contact her boss and try to get her removed." I reason why I bring this up is when I view the time line on "TrooperGate" it's easy to see that Palin was never satisfied with the outcome of the disciplinary taken against her former brother-in-law. Just like McCain, she has kept dogging him: October 27, 2005 The child custody trial in the McCann/Wooten divorce is held on October 27, 2005. At the trial, the Judge remarks that “It appears for the world that Ms. McCann and her family have decided to take off for the guy’s livelihood. January 31, 2006 McCann and Wooten are officially divorced on January 31, 2006. March 1, 2006, The State Police investigation of Wooten concludes with a ten day suspension and stern warning. November 2006 Sarah Palin is elected Governor of Alaska January 2007 Todd Palin meets with Monegan in the governor’s office and presents information about Wooten, including reports from private investigators. Monegan reviews the information from Todd Palin, but concludes that there was “no new evidence.” February 2007 Monegan reports that Governor Palin again raised the Wooten matter to him, and he warned her to “stay at arm’s length.” February 7, 2007 Governor Palin sends an email to Monegan that includes a reference to shooting a moose without his own permit, including “He’s still bragging about it in my hometown and after another cop confessed to witnessing the kill, the trooper was ‘investigated’ for over a year and merely given a slap on the wrist.” (This is interesting because Governor Palin now denies ever knowing the outcome of the State Police investigation, which makes a certain amount of sense because it may be illegal for her to have access to information from Wooten’s personnel file.) This email is also reported to say “”He threatened to kill his estranged wife’s parent, refused to be transferred to rural Alaska and continued to disparage Natives in words and tone, he continues to harass and intimidate his ex. — even after being slapped with a restraining order that was lifted when his supervisors intervened.” July 17, 2007 Governor Palin sends an email to Monegan, including this: “We can’t have double standards. Remember when the death threat was reported, and follow-on threats from Mike that he was going to ‘bring Sarah and her family down’ — instead of any reprimand WE were told by trooper union personnel that we’d be sued if we talked about those threats February 29, 2008 Phone call, Frank Bailey states, “Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads, why on Earth hasn’t — why is this guy still representing the department?” July 11, 2008 Walt Monegan is fired. As an outsider, something stinks and I'm no where near a cannery.

Alaska's Senator Coghill is McCain's BOY!!!

Coghill is trying to get Senator French removed. Gee, I wonder why... http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5742705&page=1 "I actually called them when Palin got picked and said, 'Hey, I'm your boy now," said Coghill. "I want to help them as much as I can now, but this is totally different from that." On the same day Alaska state Sen. Hollis French announced he would speed up the investigation into whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power by firing a public safety commissioner, a top ally of Sen. John McCain in the Alaskan House called to unseat French as the head of the commission. Coghill, a longtime McCain backer, said the McCain camp knew of his letter before it was sent to the legislative council (aides were "generally supportive," he said) and reiterated his support of the McCain-Palin ticket. Reached by phone in the North Pole Friday afternoon, Coghill accused French of stepping out of bounds by making what he said were politically-fueled comments. When asked about his involvement with McCain aides now, Coghill said he isn't working on the presidential campaign but plans on putting out a yard sign and passing out bumper stickers to help, even though, he said, his political support should not be confused with his pushing for French to step down. "I will do whatever I can to help them, believe me," Coghill said.

What's up with Coghill?

Andrew - can you enlighten the masses on Coghill's latest accusations that Hollis French is too compromised to oversee the investigation b/c Hollis mentioned that the results could be bad for Sarah (hello - because they could be. Silly Hollis, don't you know that in this state you don't ever mention the truth? What is wrong with you?) and because Hollis appointed Branchflower and Branchflower had a prior working relationship with Monegan (yeah, like issuing a scathing report about how poorly the 9-1-1 call from the Eagle River cop's wife was responded to b/c of outdated maps, et al. It wasn't a cozy, cush relationship). But, correct me if I'm wrong, Coghill would have been familiar with Branchflower and Monegan's former relationship long before Sarah was tapped to be the VP nominee. Yet it is only now when the McCainians and Rovians have descended on our state to snuff out this investigation that Mr Coghill decides Hollis is a compromised overseer and the prior relationship between the Top Cop and the Investigator spells trouble. It makes me think Coghill is hoping to be appointed Ambassador to Brazil or some such spot. Why all of a sudden has he decided to disapprove? Also - for the record, as a Christian, I am tired of hearing other believers (like Mr Coghill on the radio today) speak of the great need to pray for Sarah during this time. You know, some of us Christians don't believe she has any business being appointed to this spot, let alone accepting the appointment. Come on people. Can we work with diligence to not scramble the kingdoms? Remember what Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world." So when we see His followers resorting to lies, innuendo, scape-goating, deception, manipulation, distortion, etc., I hardly think this is behavior that pleases Him. He asked us to be honest ("Don't lie to one another."). Heeding His directives would bode us well.

Thank Goodness the Legislature Is Our 'Sgt Friday'!

Thanks goes to the legislators continuing to bring closure to all the rumors and find "Just the facts, ma'am". I'm sorry to see the Palin team, to include the Palins themselves, using the techniques of stall and muddying the water. Whatever they keep putting out to the news about the Palin and Heath families' complaints about their brother/son-in-law doesn't change the focus or the facts of the investigation initiated by the legislature. This investigation isn't about Wooten (pro or con). It is about the actions of the Governor, her family and her administration. Once the facts are discovered - the rumors can go away and there can be closure. The stonewalling, cancellations, etc. are not actions taken by those wanting the facts to be out there so the rumors can be stopped. It makes you wonder why. In any event, it is a sad day when the entire group of professionals (in this case, the public safety employees of the Great State of Alaska - specifically the Troopers) are getting a raw deal that they don't deserve. Hopefully, the Troopers all know the common folk rely on them everyday and respect them and their professionalism.

A Fair Investigation?

With subpoenas expected to be served to State officials and anyone else connected with Troopergate at any time, the Anchorage Daily News today reveals that John Coghill is blowing the whistle on the Chief Grandstander and Smugmeister, Hollis French. It seems that the legislator tasked with leading the investigation has been doing what he does best. He has been shooting off his mouth in the national media about an "October surprise" that is "likely to be damaging to the administration." He admits this. Coghill is on the legislative committee that appointed French, who hired Branchflower to investigate the events surrounding Troopergate. Thank goodness that Coghill has the integrity to send a letter outlining this grievance to the chairman of the committee. After all, the committee ordered French to keep politics out of the investigation. Seems the council knew that French has long-established habits. So much for the White Knight of the Palin-Haters directing a fair and honest investigation. Though Branchflower, the investigator, has earned his chops and a reputation for being fair and thorough, French's open statements about the process leave this investigation smelling like a salmon stream bank in October.

If A, then B.

French is not running this investigation, Branchflower is. If French is asked about possible repercussions, he can respond to the possible consequences. If A, then B; if C, then D. It's a simple algorithm of possible procedural consequences. If the governor and her office have illegally accessed personnel files, then they should be held accountable. No one should be above the law. Just let the process run. Collect testimony and report the findings. Then we can better see what happened. I think everyone deserves privacy. I am not of the opinion that people who protect their privacy necessarily have something to hide. However, to the extent that people act along official channels and use their official authority to drive policies, they cannot expect privacy. Even if the attorney general now says their communication devices are personal, we should still demand that communications on publicly supported devices have no expectation of privacy. Regardless of what any of us thinks of Trooper Wooten, his personnel files should be off limits to the Department of Administration. We already know, through clear admission, that Bailey had access to private information, and the recording claims that he was acting on the governor's behalf. Of course, he denies that now, and can't really explain why he said he was acting on her behalf. We all know that the people are willing to lie in public for a number of reasons. For this reason, we need to be sure that all people involved be required to give testimony under oath. Just maybe it will be less likely for them to commit perjury, though we can't be sure. Let's go ahead and get it done and stop whining. The public has a right to know.

Hmmm. It was my

Hmmm. It was my understanding that Hollis French's remarks were in response to a question along the lines of "what's the best and the worst that could happen". And that his response was along the lines of "be cleared of wrong doing" or "impeached which would be damaging". Folks have just been jumping all over the impeached half of the answer. The truth is probably somewhere in between. But the choice to stall, the revealed lies and the opaqueness (rather than transparency) of Palin & Co certainly are leaving a bad taste in the public's mouth. I would imagine French and the bipartisan committee that launched the investigation (6 Dem, 6 Repub) have been under substantial pressure applied by the McCain campaign to sweep this all under the rug. For that reason, I am proud of our AK legislators for not caving to external pressure and continuing to tend to AK business. Personally, I will be thoroughly insulted and angered should Palin, the McCain campaign and Coghill prevent completion of our AK business, a pre-VP-pick legitimate investigation into the conduct of our executive branch.

Hollis French

Fact is, French was told to keep politics out of it. By talking "October Surprise," most people would consider French's political cat to be out of the bag. No matter how hard he tries, he's covered in political stink from here until the investigation is finished and the report presented to the legislature. Pressure by the McCain camp to sweep this under the rug? Provide facts, quotes and witnesses or the BS flag gets raised on this.

You sir are dangerous to the

You sir are dangerous to the safety of the country a hack and a moron. That's all I have to say.

Pretty Tough Talk

That's pretty tough talk. And exactly how is pointing out the opposing viewpoint creating an element of danger to the country? It is usually intellectually deficient or dishonest people themselves who look an opposing argument and use ad hominem attacks with words such as hack and moron. Why is is that these Anti-Palins become so consumed with their anger and hatred that they cannot see what's on the other side of the balance scale? I'm glad, though, that your post is all you have to say on this issue. Then again, we cannot be sure since you choose 'Anonymous' as your user ID. At least I have the integrity to use my own initials...

Integrity???

I'm not the previous Anonymous, since they have no more to say... I'm a new Anonymous that also doesnt have the integrity to use my initials... because that surely is a sign of integrity. Kind of reminds me of Sarah's integrity, offering bits of information, but not all the information, not the information that might be held against you. Or could be that some people want to remain anonymous because there just isnt much room left under the bus. You might want to consider some soul searching... based on your tone... you may indeed be a hack and a moron.

Thank you, Nordstrom Shopper

Thank you, Nordstrom Shopper - My husband has been an Alaska State Trooper for over 30 years and I just read your comment to him. He thanks you also. It is so disheartening to know that the majority of ALL in law enforcement, no matter the branch, are good, solid men and women who joined to serve. How sad that our Governor who claims to have a "servant's heart", doesn't respect those who not only serve to protect, but in doing so, put their lives on the line every day. How sad that our Governor is more focused on her own political aspirations than she is in keeping her word to the citizens of Alaska that she asked to hold her accountable. But how warm and reaffirming to read comments such as yours, by citizens who are still grateful to the men and women who keep us safe.

Another Proud Wife of a State Trooper

I too am the wife of a State Trooper. Mine not 30 years but over 15 and another relative with over 18 years. I am saddened and sickened by the comments of this Governor regarding the Troopers. Still yet with all she has done and said about them - most would still take a bullet for her should the situation arise. She is the most Selfish, Self Centered, Vindictive person I have ever encountered. Ask yourself this when cast your vote in November. She has compromised the Security of the People of State of Alaska over a 4 year old personal grudge. Can you trust her with the Security of the United States of America? If you say yes- then by all means vote for her - but if you say No - then do something different. By the way I am a lifelong Republican. Wonder what McCain would say if he really knew what she has done to our safety over a personal grudge.

This is Not a Test

To "Another Proud Wife of a State Trooper" I say, yes!!!!!!!!! This is a very scary situation that affects the very safety and security of our nation. Anyone who would resort to the tactics, actions and statements ascribed to Palin is surely not a person who should be entrusted with national security decisions on behalf of America should the occassion arise. We've got enough problems without having to deal with an unethical vp who is proving to be one who doesn't think things through. That kind of loose cannon is not someone I can envision in a meeting with world leaders. At least not a meeting that will end well, that is.

Troopers Not Above Scrutiny

Thanks to both of you for your husbands' service to the safety of Alaskans. As someone who has been surrounded by law enforcement in his family and professional life I've learned that just because one is a law enforcement officer, he or she is not above the law and should be held to higher standards. Pat Wellington, the former head of the Alaska State Troopers, taught me that as I was starting my career. Any single thing that Wooten has done would be enough to cause me to be brought before a court of law, loose my property or loose my rights as a parent. The issue here is not to attack your husbands, but why the Troopers union so vigorously defends a man who admits he has done all that he has been accused of, yet still manages to hold on to his job -- or is not in front of a court of law. Death threats, poaching moose, driving under the influence of alcohol in his State of Alaska-provided vehicle, tasing his 10-year-old son (can this be called abuse?) and more have been charged against him. He has not denied these things. These are not isolated incidents. This is a pattern. Where are the voices of those who argue against domestic violence? Where are those who argue for humane treatment of children. Where are those against driving while impaired? Where are those for fair chase and compliance with fish and game laws? If there is to be blame and shame here, it is the union that represents the Alaska State Troopers. Shame on those who do not call for integrity from those sworn to defend the Alaska constitution and enforce it's laws. Whether Palin or her administration bent, broke or did not follow the letter of the law is a secondary issue. The investigation will most likely reveal the culprits, no matter how tainted with politics the report and process might be. The true issue here is when the Department of Public Safety will act on what can arguably be called a crooked cop and restore public confidence in the Alaska State Troopers.

The other side dose have

The other side dose have arguments which address these issues. This investigation should go ahead as major issues here for both sides. And I think boths sides have committed major errors and broken the law repeatly. "August 18, 2005. During this interview, she stated that she did not warn her father Heath of the death threat until two weeks after it was made: she explained the delay by saying that Wooten had no reason to shoot Heath" the only complaints ever filed against him were those by Palin and her family "Palin replaced Monegan with Chuck Kopp previously suspended and investigated" "Palin probably would not agree to an interview unless the legislature turned the matter over to the Personnel Board.[42] If witnesses were not available, French said, he would ask the Senate Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, to issue subpoenas. He said that Palin needed to be interviewed sometime in September." "On September 1, Palin essentially filed an ethics complaint against herself, asking the state Personnel Board to review the case.[44] Her lawyer asked the state Legislature to drop its investigation, saying that by state law, the board had jurisdiction over ethics issues" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Public_Safety_Commissioner_dismissal

But that's exactly why I

But that's exactly why I have a hard time with the administration's position. If the problem was the disciplinary methods used by the Troopers, then why were those procedures not the target of change by Palin and the administration? If those methods were flawed, then for the safety of EVERYONE - including the troopers themselves - the administration had a public duty, and the power, to encourage discussion to address those methods in an effort to develop better procedures/oversight and prevent reoccurence. If those guidelines were flawed, and the trooper in question has a pattern that will not change, then better procedures would catch and discipline future transgressions not only of the trooper in question, but also any other trooper who did not meet the high standards you mention. That would earn praise from all Alaskans. But, from what's come out so far, that doesn't appear to be what happened. Instead it seems they focused on one trooper's employment status, already disciplined via guidelines established at the time. Unfortunately, add in the family history and that's what makes this whole mess appear to be primarily a personal vendetta (i.e. abuse of power) and not a problem with the procedures. Agreed - some professions should be held to higher standards. I think that applies to law enforcement and our executive branch. My confidence in the State Troopers is just fine, it's my confidence in our executive branch that has been damaged.

Subpoenas

Subpoenas shouldn't be necessary in a transparent administration. Good thing that this investigation is being fast tracked so that the voters will know the truth (whatever it is) before election day.

You're Right

Subpoenas shouldn't be necessary. But, let's not forget Karl Rove and his refusal to testify in response to a Congressional subpoena. We haven't heard much about that lately. And this guy was on McCain's campaign staff and is still providing input in a lesser role now. We can hope the fast track is free of obstacles. Let's hear it for full disclosure and gutsy people who are going after the truth....

Where is Ben Franklin when you need him?

The whole concept of independence from British was to be free of the tyranny of the King....to not be subject, to be free from retribution and to prosper. Under the Palin administration, our now Popular VP candidate has involved herself with petty personal issues and used the power of entrusted in her office to attempt to destroy a private citizen. In a sane world, the consideration should be how much penalty; maybe an afternoon in old fashioned wooden stocks downtown... or impeachment and recall ... instead the nation is now in a media frenzy, excited about the "fresh face" of the Republican Party. If you stand back and think; how did this occur... you can only hope that someday, if Palin is elected VP and somehow becomes President that Karl Rove would somehow cross her up and he can realize fully what a huge collasal mistake it was to install a new "Queen" ...yup, going to vote Obama. Only becasue he didn't violate the trust of his office to attack the citizenry...instead used his power to "Serve" ... I can deal with higher taxes, and the risks of another economic expansion that the Clinton years had... but can't deal with the possibility of having the government attack it's citizens in the name of petty personal satisfaction.

petty and personal

As I hear another Alasken come up with the same disappointment over the behavior of our current Gov. it makes me wonder was nobody listening prior to her being elected? I heard and read exactly what she was all about before she gained this position. Firing of employees for no reason other than personal, and installing the "at will" policy as soon as she took office(city of wasilla). Running her campaign for lt. Gov. out of that office(wasilla city fax # on the apoc app.)Getting a variance on her Wasilla lake property a day before she left office and Todd collecting the 3 thousand dollar sewer re-bate check for the new house on Lake lucille, that $ was set aside to encourage people with less money to hook up to city sewer, problem with her kids that have been covered up, an affair with a council member from palmer, it just keeps going on and on. All this was out prior to her current position and she was still voted in. Oh yeah , the sports complex vandango that the city of wasilla is paying millions on, sorry, had to throw that one in, and I bet she gets voted in as V.P. Wake up Alaskens, we did this to our selves.

Truth soars, guilt hides

Truth eagerly presents itself on the wings of openness, transparency, and desire to communicate in a guileless, unvarnished fashion. Truth desires expediency and rushes to free the falsely accused. Truth floods cleansing light upon the issues held in the darkness of uncertainty. Guilt and deception, however, live and thrive in the hidden darkness of hesitance, refusal, excuses, and delayed revelations. Regarding Palin and this investigation, Rep. Carl Gatto told the MatSu valley Frontiersman newspaper several weeks ago that "When you are crazy for your boss, you will do anything". If this were one of my student's assignment, I would break this sentence down into its essence: When you are CRAZY, you will do ANYTHING. Are these witnesses avoiding the inevitable because they are emotionally and psychologically co-dependent to their boss' higher cause, or just plain hiding guilt, none of the above, or both? Time will tell. But the investigation must go on to find out the truth.

Who cares?

Other than the bloviating, Palin-hating, scandal-obsessed gang (and we all know who they are), who cares? Everyone can see this for what it is: big smoke, no fire. French has always been a smug grandstander who has demonstrated an innate ability to jump on any bandwagon that will make a conservative or republican look bad. Lyda Green is angry because she's no longer the big biddy in the henhouse. Randy Ruedrich got a good spanking and a nice fine thanks to Palin. Bottom line: all have axes to grind and cannot be relied upon to provide any objective (read: honest) commentary on this situation whatsoever. Worse: one is in charge of what will someday be seen as the Palin Witch Hunt. Facts in what the scandal-lovers are calling Palin-gate are easy to understand: - Wooten readily admits in print and in his records of doing things that would have earned anyone else a pretty severe fine, surrender of personal property, a restraining order, time in front of a judge, loss of a child and perhaps even some jail time. - Thanks to John Cyr at the union that represents the Troopers, Wooten got nothing more than a slap on the wrist. - Monaghan serves at the governor's pleasure. He's a big boy. He understands the rules. He did not play ball and was kicked out of the game. - Palin? Her big mistake was not going public with a detailed list of reasons why she canned him. Had it been me, I'd have announced that Monaghan had knowledge of a corrupt Alaska State Trooper who had been given more chances than the citizens he was sworn to protect and, as a result of his inaction on this case and on policy and budget issues, was being let go. Me? I'm voting Palin. Call me a Palinista or a Sarah-bot, I don't care. She has exhibited more moxie than any of the above players.
