MONEGAN SPEAKS: Names Todd Palin & others

Tonight on KTUU Channel 2 News, former Commissioner of Public Safety Walt Monegan broke his silence and admitted that he was pressured on numerous occasions by Todd Palin to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten.

Monegan said he met with Palin numerous times to talk about Wooten as well as Frank Bailey from the governor's office and Commissioner of Administration Annete Krietzer who also pressured him to fire Wooten.

It was just yesterday that Palin put out a press release that stated:

“To allege that I, or any member of my family, requested, received or released confidential personnel information on an Alaska State Trooper, or directed disciplinary action be taken against any employee of the Department of Public Safety, is, quite simply, outrageous.

Governor Palin lied. In fact Monegan stated in the KTUU interview that he finally told the administration that the conversations about firing Wooten had to stop.

We'll post more when the KTUU website is updated.

And just a note for all our skeptics and the Palin defenders since our story broke yesterday morning....here's looking at you kids.

Keep Up the Good Work

Andrew--I am a voter in Maine who was trying to learn more about the person who could end up being the next leader of the Free World when I found your blog. From what I have read, it appears that Alaska is a very difficult place to be a Democrat or Independent and an even more difficult place to be critical of Governor Palin. Thank you for continuing to speak your mind. Whether or not people agree with you, they should at least respect that you are doing exactly what the Founders hoped would happen when they enacted the 1st Amendment. On a less lofty topic, did the McCain campaign make any attempt to "vet" the Governor by talking to you? Even if they did not beleive you, it seems that they should have at least considered what you had to say. If they did not, I think that speaks to their arrogance or incompetence or both.

Incompetence

Evidently, whoever SP sent to check out Kopp's dossier missed a few essentials! Why is no one "double-checking"? Concerning Wooten, why didn't the Governor know that you CAN NOT just fire a Union worker at your whim (or 35 of them)???? There are procedures that need to be followed. If the criteria isn't met then they usually aren't fired! Why isn't she getting any ADVICE???? Or, is she ABOVE advice? What IS the problem with her advisors? She is obviously not getting accurate advice or she is not heeding it? I find this down right scary! We are ALL in BIG trouble! You can't run a State with total incompetents at the helm!

Investigation(s)

In fairness to all, let's see where the investigation(s) go. By the way, wouldn't it be a bit better story for all involved if Wooten was investigated by an independent investigator as well? I mean, a Trooper investigated by Troopers. Something sure smells there. It's hilarious to read about a fellow who tasers his kid and we have all sorts of reasons why it was "ok", or not as bad as it sounds. Hell if I tasered my kid, the whole world would be claiming child abuse. And, we're supposed to think Monegan is the 2nd coming, and he reduces the punishment! Wow!!!! Makes you wonder, so many complaints.... maybe there's a bit of a smoking gun over this guy Wooten, after all???

re Todd and others....

Two things come to mind. 1. re judicada, Monegan couldn't fire Wooten even if he wanted to; 2. sexual harrassment resulting in a hostile environment and termination of employment because he didn't give in to his female boss. Bad girl, bad, bad bad girl!

Why did Begich fire Monegan?

ADN's 7/19 editorial stated: "On the other hand, Monegan served as Anchorage police chief under Mayor Mark Begich and Begich asked him to leave too. Mayor Begich is a pragmatic, results-oriented manager, so maybe there are legitimate performance issues with Monegan's tenure." So why did Begich fire Monegan? Just because you have been a good cop for thirty years doesn't mean you're a good manager.

Please read "Anatomy of a Scandal"

Another blogger discusses this very situation, look about half-way down the page. Should help you to understand. It did for me since I had the same question.

But not exactly factual

Monegan wasn't allowed to stay on just to finish some work. He was surprised when he was let go my MB as well. Look at the old news stories. Same thing happened then in that he got canned and was surprised and had "no idea" why he was let go.

Kopp is so qualified

Andrew, don't give up on Mr Krapashitz (Kopp). He says his record is clean but only because one lady had the guts to stand up to him and thats the only SH complaint on record. There have been others. The Palins say they looked into him and his sexual harassment claim was UNFOUNDED! Even Kopp didn't say that! They didn't look into him. If they had asked anyone in Public Safety on the Penninsula they would have learned about his reputation. He will do whatever the Palin's want he is so eager to have this job! No wait; maybe his experience running a department with 30 total employees has prepared him better than anyone else in the state. My bad, the Palin's always know best!

The cover-up

Andrew, Please continue to look for answers regarding Mr.Kopp. There are so many of us on the Peninsula who can shed light on the character of this man. One place to start would be the release of his personnel files. The average person may not understand that any "sealed" files (of which Mr. Kopp has) would not be released in his personnel file. This is only the tip of the iceberg. His womanizing and attempts to womanize are only one of many corrupt incidents of his past. Mr. Kopp is due. Way overdue.

Perhaps Chuck Kopp will now fire Mr. Wooten?

Let's see that now! Wooten is the Golden Boy---no one will touch him now after this extravaganza.

First Dude is Duh Dud

On the investigative front, maybe someone could check into how the First Dude's "minor" race infractions during a past Iron Man contest conveniently were overlooked and disappeared... Not too difficult to ask those around that race what the real scoop was. Maybe the First Dude will come up with a statewide health care plan...

Good 4 the Goose, Good 4 the Gander

Come on folks, lets be fair here....A little consideration is all I ask. I think our "open & transparent" governor should be afforded the same consideration that she was so quick to offer John Cowdery when she asked him to resign for the good of the state....before any conviction and before any trial. I mean after all, what goes around, comes around. Step Down Sista!

Andrew is it just me or is

Andrew is it just me or is the Palin organization starting to remind me of a previous presidential administration? Lets see, they allegedly lie, they allegedly destroy lives of their political enemies, the spouse is allegedly involved in dirty business, they allegedly use political power abusively, and they whine when getting caught that this is interfering with getting the "work of the people" done. There are other similarities but just where have we heard this before?? Oh yea, could it be the other "twofer" team of the Klintons?? My journey from being a Palin supporter to a concerned citizen looking for a real "open and transparent" leader has been significantly impacted by your work. Better keep an eye on your six if the above comparison continues to unfold. You should be paid for all your work, the Peoples Daily News owes you big time.

Todd-----Stay home and babysit your children

What are you doing hanging around the office every day? Go home and babysit those kids. Your wife is the Governor...not you!

But that's Molly's job

Todd is doing his best to pay Molly back for baby sitting her sis' kids.

Todd Palin a meddler

This Monegan episode spacks of the Mat Maid Dairy Debacle. Todd Palin was very involved with the final days of Mat Maid. He was involved with the unannounced ambush at Mat Maid last year. He huffed and puffed all around the offices until he heard the CEO was headed back to Mat Maid to give the Gov her tour. Once he heard that, he slammed his hand on the table and made the whole entourage leave immediately. Couldn't wait 5 minutes. Many witnesses to this. He also had two of his shirt tail cousins from Wasilla who were Mat Maid Anchorage employees, climbing the fence at the Palmer plant snooping around and reporting to him every night via phone. Once the Gov fired both boards she inserted her cronies and childhood babysitter's daughter in law to the Director of Ag position when she had absolutely NO experience. No conflict of interest though, the Director of Ag's father in law is ONLY the largest dairy farmer in the valley. Sarah's hand picked board immediately gave her farmer neighbors almost a 50% increase in their milk price, further crippling the business. Lots of cover ups with this board. They are still being investigated. This story...seems the same...change the names and the dates.....same corruption. The Palin's.......more will be found out soon. Anyone who crosses them gets their heads chopped off. God bless you Walt Monegan for standing up for what is right. Palin probably thought she could buy you off with another position, which you promtly turned down. Good for you!

Palin's campaign promises regarding agriculture

Following is the verbatim quote from Mat-Su Barbie's campaign issue paper on Alaska Agriculture. She has failed on every promise she made. It's laughable to read the qualifications she says her Director of Agriculture will have and then compare Francie Havermeister's qualifications which appear to be limited to high school friendship with Sarah and Todd. I could not attach the original to this blog entry. Would be glad to send it and other issue papers to Andrew so he can remind all how she has failed at every turn to honor her committments. "Sarah Palin Talks About Alaska Agriculture As we look for ways to enhance Alaska’s renewable resource industries, we need to look toward growing our $30 million agricultural industry. The important thing to keep in mind as we look to find these ways is to establish open communications with the industry. My Administration will seek the input from farmers and agricultural organizations that want to see this industry prosper. • The Alaska Division of Agriculture is critical for the industry’s growth and success. The Director and staff must have extensive experience in the agricultural industry as well as in business, finance, marketing, and promotion. These people need to be the very best we can find. They must be able to work together as a professional team, serving the agriculture community – not the Division. • The Board of Agriculture and Conservation needs to be a true representation of the hard working farmers throughout the state. It should serve the industry – not the Division – by giving sound advice about the concerns and needs to the administration for assistance. • I will work to reunite the dairy farmers and Matanuska Maid Creamery. Only through a united front, can a solution to stabilize both the industry and MatMaid be found. • The Mount McKinley Meat plant cannot be lost. It is a critical link in the agricultural industry. We need to stabilize this plant over the long term and stop rocking the boat. Farmers are reluctant to invest in growing their livestock operations without knowing if the plant will operate year to year. • Farmers need suitable agricultural land available to expand operations and provide farmland for our future farmers. These lands need to have access and utilities. Land disposal programs for agricultural use need to reward farmer’s effort in clearing and developing raw land into productive farms. The University of Alaska is a Land Grant - Sea Grant University. This designation by the federal government allows them some federal funding that is not provided to other educational institutions. It requires them to maintain some requirements including research and education in the areas of natural resources to assist the state. I will work to regain communications between the university and agricultural industry. The university needs to get back on track with the needs of the farmers, ranchers, and aquaculture."

Let Truth Ring

Andrew, I thank you and appreciate everything that you have done. Give thanks to your lovely wife, she must be an angel. Politics is heck..... HUH? But so worth it when the truth is finally heard.

QUESTION FOR ANDREW

Assuming everything we know now is true, could you speculate on what will happen from here on out? Just how serious is this for sarah and her administration? Is this a little bump in the road or what? Could this lead to her leaving office? I'm just trying to get a grasp on how much fire there is in comparison to all the smoke. THANKS!

Andrew's Response:

I think this will be serious. There are a lot of people envolved in this mess and what comes out from the investigation will not be pretty.

In addition, I think a lot of Alaskans are going to wonder why Todd Palin was allowed to have so much influence.

What will be interesting to watch is if the blood in the water brings out any other sharks with tales to tell.

Thanks AH

for the entertainment. It's popcorn time now! I haven't had this much fun since W. J. Clinton got caught in his lies.

Congratulations

Congratulations and thanks are in order. What you have done was truly brave, especially given your high profile. Thank you for doing this. Perhaps someone should publicly call for her to step down like she did to Cowdrey. That branch could truly hold your weight. Kudos.

EQUAL TREATMENT

AS SARAH HAS SAID “GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INOCENT “- NOW SHE SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME WAY. SHE HAS ASKED EVERYONE (State legislators and US congressmen) INDITED TO STEP DOWN BEFORE THEY HAVE HAD DUE PROCESS. THIS HAS INCLUDED STEVENS AND YOUNG – TED BAD TIMING ON YOUR RECENT PALIN DEAL. OK SARAH - STEP DOWN AND SAVE ALASKA THE EMBARASSMENT. EAT YOUR OWN MEDICINE. YOU ARE AS GUILTY AS THE DAY IS LONG (AK LONG). THE VIDEOS OF DENIALS ARE SO OBVIOUS. I HAVE KIDS AND GRANDKIDS AND CAN READ A LIAR'S FACE. THE INVESTIGATION IS JUST A BOOKEND. ANDREW – SAINT ANDREW – WAY TO GO!

Sarah on Eddie

I heard Sarah this afternoon on Eddie's show say that neither her or TODD pressured Monegan. So either she lied or her husband lied to her.

Or another possibility

Monegan lied.

Andrew's Response:

I guarantee you that more people than Walt Monegan had conversations with Palin folks about firing Wooten. And more people than Todd Palin, Annette Krietzer and Frank Bailey know about their fixation with getting Wooten fired.

This is going to get ugly really fast.

But hey lego1...keep hope alive.

Andrew is this Wooten guy so bad?

Do you think the Governor had good cause to hound Wooten if he is, as they say, so shady and constantly barely avoiding serious action against him. We have all seen people that are bad eggs constantly avoid prosecution. I don't know enough about the guy but the Palin family sure seems to. Is there no basis for their wrath? Vic

Andrew's Response:

I have seen Wooten's personal file before I wrote my initial blog and apart from the complaints filed by the Palins and Heath's he has not had one other complaint filed against him in eight years as a Trooper.

Wooten was suspended for those complaints that were found to be valid and I would agree that they were neither smart or legal. But the amount of complaints against this guy from one family has been unreal.

This is an ugly messy divorce with a lot of he said/ she said. But the most important question is did the government use political influence to force action on an individual. This is no different than if your Senator was hounding the IRS to consistently audit you.

The good thing is that the issue has been raised and now an independent investigator can sort it allout and possibly clear the governor or her husband or staff of doing anything wrong.

Palin and Commissioner

The thing that strikes me is how poor Palin's judgement is. If she didn't think the firing of Monegan wasn't going to cause an uproar, she is absolutely out of touch with her own state. And to do it just before a critical gas line vote ... what could she have been thinking?? Was she trying to impress the national Republicans with her "power?" I am a Democrat who was willing to give Palin a chance. Now we are watching her stupidly destroy herself. No one has to help her do that. She's doing a great job of it all by herself. Mr. Halcro, thank you for what you are doing.

Don't yank my chain

Come on, don't do this to me. Are you sure, I mean, really really sure? Please don't tell me we've found the smoking gun. To quote Peter Griffin, "Holy Freak'n Crap"!!!

Commissioner Kopp

Please do not let the questionable integrity of Kopp get lost in the mix of the Palin/Wooten fiasco. Dig deeper into his past. He should NOT hold this position of power....his resignation should be demanded!

Chuck Kopp

I was an employee of the City of Kenai in 2005. EVERY city employee HAD to participate in a four hour class conducted by an attorney who trained against sexual harrassment and discrimination. We called this the "Kopp Kourse".

IS IT TRUE?..........

Did Chuck Kopp actually demand that everyone in the department sign some sort of pledge to HIM this week? And that one of the employees stated that the wording should be changed to a "pledge to the department?" I only heard a blurb on this...do you know anything about this? But all this aside, the REAL issue is the ABUSE OF POWER used by Palin and family to coerce certain people to fire Wooten. And then to give the lame excuse of "wanting to move in a new direction." When Kopp was asked what the "new direction" was he said something like---"I don't know you will have to ask the Governor." Are you kidding me?....He took the job without even knowing what the "new direction" was? Unbelieveable!!!!!! Only the best of the best for us Alaskans. She insists on keeping Corrections commissioner, Joe Schmidt after nearly all employees voted a "no confidence" and Sarah says she has complete trust in Joe Schmidt? What-no investigation asked for by her? And then to take Walt Monegan who everyone respected and TRUSTED and boot him out without an explanation? I can't figure this chick out! She has got to go!
