Palin tapped as McCain's VP choice

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

A few months ago I wrote on this blog that I thought there was no way that Governor Sarah Palin would be picked as John McCain's VP.

"Sarah Palin will not be chosen as McCain's Vice President and it has to do with a combination of a lack of experience and what she brings to the table," I wrote on July 7.

Today I was proven wrong.

This shocking choice says more about McCain's desperation than it does about Palin's qualifications.

At the age of 72, McCain would be the oldest newly elected president in U.S. history if inaugurated in 2009. In choosing Palin, McCain has put one of the least qualified politicians in the country a heartbeat away from the presidency.

With Republicans on the verge of spending the next 40 years wandering in the desert because of their inability to manage government, McCain's choice highlights that he just doesn't get it.

You, unfortunately, have no

You, unfortunately, have no idea what Alaska "executive experience" really means. Alaska politics is part-time. They need time for their "real" jobs like commercial fishing and oil exploration. Alaskans pride themselves on independence and DO NOT believe in big government. That's the reason they DO NOT HAVE big government. One person with that kind of "executive experience" placed in the the vast US Federal government would get crushed. Palin is no Joan of Arc. Not even close. In fact, it's dangerous and negligent to think that she could even handle the position of President of the United States. It insults all Americans who want the best leaders possible serving the people. Remember, the primaries are a vetting process and the candidates have been scrutinized for many months now. Palin has not.

State your case then

You seem to think you have the market corner on what Alaska Executive experience is. Having worked in JNU in several different capacities and been around those who have worked in the exec branch I think you are full of it. You apparently have no idea what it entails. However, if you truly think being a state senator in Illinois and then a little over 3 years in DC qualify someone to be President I would just like to know what you are smoking. Of course, Palin isn't running for President, McCain is, and his experience dwarfs Barry Obama's. By a massive amount. I for one think Obama would get absolutely overwhelmed were he to win the presidency and I am more frightened of that prospect than of anything in my entire adult life. Well next to Manny Ramirez going to the Yankees, but other than that, Obama scares the crap out of me.

Manny going to the Yankees scares me too! AH

...until you look at George W. Bush...

...and then there is a REAL reason to have the bejeezus scared out of you. W was governor of Texas (another extremely huge "western" state) before he became president of the United States, and his term of office has been an unmitigated disaster not only for U.S. citizens, but for the world. Hundreds of thousands have dies in Iraq for his vindictive family matters (he had to go chase after Saddam because Saddam went head to head with W's Daddy...sounds like Sarah and the State Troopers but on a grander scale, doesn't it?) Yeah, I'll take Barry Obama and his scant executive experience any day over the likes of George W and Sarah, not to mention McKain (not that he really matters...he's likely to keel over before the end of the first term...thus the importance of calling stink on the Palin pick.) Durf. Wake up. You're lost in the haze of whatever neo-con Republican circles you're running in. Break out of it and recognize Obama for what he is: the best thing going for you and all the rest of us in this election cycle.

Silly Sarah Chuck needs help

Hey Sarah, Chuck might need your help, AGAIN! It seems he attended APD's police officer testing today and FAILED the written exam. It looks like he went from Top KOPP to a big flop. It's hard to believe he was actually in charge of the Alaska Police Standards Council. Maybe if you are elected to VP you'll be able to appoint him director of the FBI, NOT!

Sarah for V.P.

Well Andrew, at this point I think it is time for you to sharpen you pencil, take out your personalized stationary and start writing your "sorry" notes. And then I think you should sit back and taste a piece of humble pie.

...Why would I write a sorry note, let alone sorry notes? AH

Palin Truths from her home state

THANKS ALASKANS WE NEED TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT MCCAIN'S STRANGE CHOICE

Andrew, Please

You know, enough is enough out of you. You are just as tired as the old-line politicos but in a different way. No one likes the guy who's so thoroughly convinced that he's the smartest guy in the room, and that's you, Andrew. Please remember you were utterly rejected by the electorate, and just run your business and quit blogging your resentful bile. Go Sarah!

...Here's a suggestion, how about you quit reading my blog instead. AH

Agreed. I invite the world

Agreed. I invite the world to join me. You know, that's about the response I expected. It says a lot.

Corruption in a Perky Package

In Alaska like the rest of America we like stereotypes. It seemed normal to see a bunch of white guys or good old boys as Sara loves to say charged with wrongdoing and hauled off to jail in humiliation. But we take our eye off the ball when the perky silly cheerleader is the one in power and she and her husband demonstrate even worse behaviour over and over. Ms Palin has had the advantage of a complicent press here in Alaska willing to ignore the Palins bullying and dishonesty as long as she plays the victim and stays perky. Sara Palin is like the high school goody two shoes who runs up to the teacher puffs out her lower lip and complains that the big bad football players in the back of the room are picking on her and are cheating on the test. While the is teacher is scolding the other students Sara is stealing the answer key to the test. Corruption can come in a Perky Package.

INSANE McCAIN...

I was simply too shocked and dismayed to comment yesterday. I found it difficult to find the time to type in between bouts of severe nausea and stomach cramping. Call it Palinenteritis. I am sorry that I will be switching my vote from someone I have long supported and admired. I can't stand by a candidate who makes such an incredibly stupid political move to pander to women like myself. It tells me one thing, and that one thing offends me: McCain thinks women are stupid.

In jest

I'm thinking McCain was up late one night and caught some Discovery Channel re-runs of Alaska Week, it seemed to help their ratings...why not his?

Sarah Palin

Andrew...This is a first time for me. To blog that is. Typing is not my thing, and this print is pretty small. I am a senior, and 28 year Alaskan. Thank you for your courage. You have opened a lot of eyes. My first take on Sarah was as she took on Frank when she was not chosen to replace him in Wash. DC. I have always seen Sarah as vindictive and immature. Yes, I say immature...not young at 44. Proof is when she speaks. She talks before she thinks and comes across when confronted like a high school girl. She has handed out her share of accusations, but sees herself as above scrutiny. Her speech yesterday has made me sick. She took center stage without a slam at the Dems, but to poke fun at our deligation. Much to McCain's delight. Those "good old boys" have worked for Alaska and understand loyality. She is now playing with the big boys who will point out her weakness. Her approval rating is over rated. Not many would slap the hand when money is being handed out. A true conservative would have taken the surplus to beef up our railroads to take away our dependency on cars. To build that bridge that many of us want. The hand out says we do not have to change our ways...the State feels your pain. My question as I listened to the comments from her fans yesterday. Why is this so great for Alaska? Why is this a great day for Alaska? We are already on the map. Could it be that they think this will help us with our special interests? Gee I thought that was a no-no..and her legacy. I see in Sarah a younger Pelosi. My way or nothing, speak before you think, cuting people down who do not honor her. She is over her head. Now I will really tick a few off by saying...she should be putting her kids first. Each one is at a very needy age. There are plenty of years for her to follow her dream. If not for her kids...for Alaska. She says she has a lot a work to do here yet. Yep..she has two more years before we get to vote again. Please do not let up Andrew. The investigators need to know we are not in awe of this past 24 hours. We expect and want a fair investigation. Yes Andrew you are right...this does show McCains lack of judgement. He made this decision with little regard for the country, but for winning the election. I think it will back fire.

Thanks for joining us, Kate

There's a lot of us that have never blogged before, Kate. We've thought we were alone in a wilderness wondering either why we became lemmings or realizing that that certain hesitation about jumping on the Palin bandwagon did indeed have a real cause. The hairs on the back of our neck prickled, but were we the only ones that felt it? Now we know what the rest of the nation will soon learn. Surely, somebody is going to come up with an ad that features Sarah on the Bob and Mark show girlishly giggling when the host says "Lyda Green is a cancer to the state, she should just die". This will be followed by sound bites of obvious contridictory statements made days, sometimes just hours, apart, and will include the lie she so boldly stated during her introduction about her role in the "bridges to nowhere". Then it will show Sarah calling all of us "haters" for not agreeing with her, and close with some of the vindictive name calling she's become known for. This ad won't even have to mention the fact that she is under investigation for abuse of power and ethics violations. No, the real Sarah all by herself should do the trick. For those of us who barely tolerated John McCain's positions on ANWR, border security, welfare for illegals, finance reform, etc., etc., his incredibly horrible lack of judgement in this selection combined with his complete inability to conduct a proper vetting process leaves little hope for a successfully presidency. I have little hope for a good end for this story.

Well written and well thought out.

Keep blogging...

Cindy's casts?

how many of you noticed yesterday in all the video feeds on cable, networks, and in the still picks on net or ADN that Cindy McCain at times had either no cast on her right arm, a white cast on her right arm, and a pink cast on her right arm? in the same day! what is that weirdness all about???????

Cindy McCain's casts on right arm...

Anonymous.....thanks for your post. I noticed that too! On Fox she had on a white cast at the VP rally and then on CNN she had on a pink one at the same very rally....And why does she need a cast when it was supposedly just a sprain? something isn't right here....i'm glad you noticed it too. it says we are paying attn to the little things too! And can anyone answer for me why at the announcement in Dayton, Ohio yesterday there were NO McCain/Paulin signs ready to hand out to the crowd? Says to me she was a really really really last minute pick! Anyone else notice no signs either? At most rallies/reveils there are already signs with the VP's name on it. But not this time..hmmmm...

Cindy casts

She has had a long standing AC sparation and all of the hand shaking has exerbated that injury. She is waering various temporary spints to avoid hand shakes. That is all.

Too bad

McCain now falls lockstep behind the Republican political corruption that he swore to fight, after his Keating 5 debacle, with his pick of Palin. Our poor Republican bretheren have become so desperate to maintain their webs of power that abuse of power has become just another innocuous status quo ... But, I believe Palin really does believe her own hype, esp about fighting corruption in AK, and like most self-delusionals she felt that she was either invisible or immune from even an accusation of corruption. Abuse of power; however, especially when woven in deception, becomes a wicked web that even more power cannot unweave!

Pailin as VP pick

This appears to me to be pandering (again) to the religious right. Was this the result of pressure from McCain campaign consultant Ralph Reed? A compromise? Do we really want sympathy votes for right-to-life Sarah and POW McCain in order to ignore fundamental issues which affect disenfranchised voters and make a real difference in the lives of the individuals who will be impacted for generations? This first presidential decision is isulting. Proud to be Independent and Secular!

"Proud, independent and secular"

I am not a Palin fan by any stretch; but, your Obama vote will lead to "fearful, dependent and socialist." I hate the idea that I have to vote for the lesser of evils; but, that is too often the case. Unless some independent superstar emerges, I am going to vote my view of the lower-risk bad choice - McCain/Palin. What a bummer. Andrew - does Sarah have to resign as Governor to run for Veep?

She's tough

Whether or not we agree or approve of what she's done to-date, she's demonstrated that she can get elected, she can push things through and she can weather criticism. She's tough. I'm hoping that's what will be demonstrated on the national stage. I don't want to see her go down in that venue now that she's there. Mr. Halcro was quoted in the ADN blog as saying "it's about the person." Couldn't be more true. This is a really interesting political season.

Have you lost your mind?

With all due respect, either you haven't been paying much attention, or you've done lost your mind. She's "demonstrated she can weather criticism?" Hardly. She has been treated like a princess by the ADN ever since she called her press conference to bring down her fellow Commissioner at Oil and Gas because she needed a viable excuse to leave the job (it wasn't working well for her kids). They've treated her with kid gloves ever since. She's never had an iota of criticism except on this blog and she's erupted at that - saying petty, vindictive things about Andrew "he's a hater," etc. Just last Sunday afternoon, for crying out loud, she called a letter writer to the editor who's letter had been printed in Sunday's paper and gave him a royal lashing for saying he's wished he hadn't voted for her. You are right, and so is Mr. Halcro, that this pick was all about Sarah "the person." But, since she won't be given the absolutely free ride she's enjoyed her whole political life by the 4-5 guys in the press who've been covering her, then Sarah The Person is going to be portrayed for who many of us up here have discovered she really is: unethical, a fabricator, stunningly vindictive, clueless about policies and procedures, narcissistic, uninformed, inarticulate about things she hasn't memorized her talking points on, and utterly uninformed on national and international affairs.

Thanks for this info

well done ! After the appointment yesterday i was scouring for info - who is this perky person? what is so unbelievable about this ? I told people for weeks, if Obama doesn't pick a woman, McCain would. And do he did. But this one? She is mired in a mess, and I doubt she will make it through the public vetting process. I would not be surprised today if McCain's team is reeling a bit from all the information coming out. Since McC kept this pick so close to his chest, he wasn't looking for input or advice. (not good judgment there). He didn't even trust his advisors to help him in digging deep (not good judgment again), so here we are. A "woman" so what.... a woman who used her position to continue the fight she had already started to oust someone she had a personal relationship with. I've been in charge of HR depts for gov't for many years - local gov'ts - and she clearly stepped over the line in many circimstances. The interview in the wash post with the fired Chief, calls it correctly when he reports he told her husband, Todd to stay out of the process because no matter what the outcome it would then include 'gov't involvement." I'll tell you who is going to come out good? The brother-in-law. He has a law suit waiting to happen in this case now. He'll probably settle a case against the agency in no time as lawyers advise this small town joe of his rights. I don't sarah will make it through the next few weeks and after she bows out, McCain can blame the democrats instead of himself , he'll claim "he tried" to get a woman in, to go for the sympathy vote. He'll replace her with someone he really wanted "Lieberman?" just so the repubs are relived. She's being used clearly, and from my seat... she set herself up and got in way over her head. She was out of line in this trooper case. THANK GOD we have these blogs now for info - some mis-information sure, but at least we can get the real story. Say Bye to Palin... it'll come up soon enough

ok but...

what I don't get is why the Republicans vetting her didn't have all this info? if I, a stay at home mom in Washington state, can spend a few hours at my computer and find all this stuff, troopergate, the laughing radio interview thing, the polar bear thing, the shadow governor, etc, etc, etc. Why the heck didn't this info get to McCain...or better yet, assuming it did, why did he pick her anyway?? I'm looking for their motive. I really don't think, after what they've done for 20 years, that the Republican machine went stupid. It's truly unbelievable that they thought they'd get Clinton voters with this. They are just not that gullible (neither the voters nor the Republican machine) Something just doesn't add up.

Re Thanks for this info

Lets get a few things straight about Palin stepping over the line. First her X brother-in-law is a public servant who was convicted of a game violation and it has also been confirmed that he used a taser on a child just for the fun of it. Why has he not been fired? He is a law enforcement officer and he should be held accountable for breaking the laws he is required to uphold. If I had the information the Governor had, I would feel compelled to ask the commissioner what is being done about this so called public servant. I would argue that it is her responsibility as an elected official to have her administration look into the issue of why this officer was still on the force. Even the fired commissioner has said that Palin never asked him to fire the X brother-in-law. At this point, absolutely nothing has been revealed that indicates that Palin has used her office for personal gain. The people who have tried to destroy this woman have political agendas and they seem incapable of seeing many of these issues for what they really are.

Re: Re Thanks for this info

"Lets get a few things straight about Palin stepping over the line." I wanted to use your phrase in case you forgot it. So let's do get some things straight. Wooten tasered a kid, not a bright thing to do although it was a taser with a blank charge and no connecting wires such as they use in training. Like I said, not bright, but not lethal. He shot a moose illegaly, with his wife's tag while she was standing there teary eyed because she couldn't shoot it and her dad was pressuring her to fill the cow tag. Her dad, Sarah and Todd, and others kept the moose in their freezers and enjoyed it until it came time to dig up things to use on Wooten, two years later. Keep in mind also, these charges and others against Wooten were investigated and Wooten was disciplined. Disciplined enough? Maybe not, but to revisit and reopen the issue is double idemnity, and that is illegal. As far as Monegan saying he had no pressure to fire Wooten ... wrong again. Either read, research, or don't, but don't make it up. Let's use your phrase and get some things straight. This is not the first time Sarah has used a political office for her own vindictive purposes. But as she gains higher offices with more power they become more evident. Makes you wonder what a VP could do doesn't it. Jerry

Fact, He shot that moose and

Fact, He shot that moose and that is illegal. Fact, Walt publicly stated that nether Sarah or Todd had ever asked him to fire Wooten. "For the record, no one ever said fire Wooten. Not the governor. Not Todd. Not any of the other staff," Monegan said Friday from Portland. ADN 8-30-08 I did not make anything up, but I did leave out the parts about his driving under the influence and the death threat made to Sarah's father because at this point I've not been able to substantiate those accusations. Questioning the commisioner about Wooten's ability to do his job can can certainly be perceived as pressure, but they did not reopen the case. By the way, double idemnity refers to a clause in a life insurance policy. I think you mean double jeopardy and that is a legal term that certainly does not apply at this point in the game. Mike

The end of politics as we know it

I really still find this event a bit hard to digest. However, I do know this: Millions of people voted for McCain in the primaries, thousands volunteered for him, and more than a hundred million dollars was spent on the campaign. Now we find out that all those people who believed McCain would select a running mate based on experience and the ability to step into the presidency if McCain couldn't serve were wrong: Experience counts for nothing, dedication to the Republican party nationally means nothing, development of a solid understanding of economic, domestic, and foreign policy mean nothing. Instead, we will see a running mate chosen for her gender. One who, within the past couple months, said she didn't know what a vice president does. Well, lets just say that McCain saved this surprise for the Republican faithful until a very spectacular moment. His timing, if not is sanity, is impeccable.

Why McCain?

I'm curious. If republican party loyalty is important to you, why would you have voted and worked for McCain during the primaries? The guy's greatest reputation prior to running was as a backstabber to those in his own party. That's the reason why the main stream media and the NYT in particular loved him.

Sarah Palin promoter for the Great State of Alaska

Well, we sure can say, Sarah put Alaska on the map. Folks know Wasilla and Alaska. As a state, we have received the publicity of a lifetime. Sarah may be weak in areas and stumbled in others, but we cannot argue what she has become in National media, an icon for women. Many Woman, even tho they dont argee with SP, have decided to support her and Mccain, and get over the past. Yesterday was a great day for our state. Tides are turning. We may know more then the "states" but its time to circle our own wagon around one of our own. Go Sarah!
