Politically motivated? What the....

The spinsters are calling the investigation into whether former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired for refusing to fire Governor Sarah Palin's ex brother in law, "outlandish, politically motivated charges."

"The governor of every state gets legal counsel, and this attorney is part of a weeks-old effort to provide this governor defense in a series of outlandish, politically motivated charges," said senior McCain adviser Tucker Eskew.

Really? So who was so outlandish and politically motivated?

The governor when she held a hastily called press conference on August 13 to sheepishly release a recorded phone call that revealed her close aide Frank Bailey exerting pressure to get her ex brother in law fired?

Or when she revealed that her staff had made 24 different phone calls to Department of Public Safety officials regarding her ex brother in law after denying any calls had ever been made?

Or when fomer Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan stated he had turned over emails received directly from the governor regarding her ex brother in law after she told the public she never had any direct contact with him about her ex brother in law?

Yeah it was outlandish and politically motivated....that's why the legislature voted unanimously to begin an investigation.

Also, our friend and fellow blogger Robert Dillon brings us up to date on what the press is covering or uncovering on the VP watch:

Thank Heavens

I found you. This election means a great deal to me. I am a white older woman, in my 60's, the past 8 years has cost me dearly in every way and my son has just come home from Iraq, again. I have much to say and yet it is better for me to spend my time searching out and finding places such as this where I can read the truth about the new Star. I have a Viet Nam story too. cherieclark.com

Or when...

Walt Monegan was offered a position on the ABC board when he was fired, then Palin (over a month later) states that he wasn't doing a good enough job on alcohol in bush Alaska. Why offer him a position on ABC then????

Will AK want her back?

After all the dirt is unearthed by national investigators, media, etc. will Alaska want Palin back as Governor after the Republicans lose in November? Methinks her chances of public office will be greatly tainted by all that we continue to learn about Palin.

I can't speak for anyone else...

but my feeling is a firm no. Absolutely not. I don't even have to wait for the national media to dig up dirt. The details that have already been unearthed locally tell me she's not fit to hold any office. She's a train wreck, a liar, fiscally ignorant, vindictive. There's nothing this woman wouldn't do to further her political career, even if it's at the expense of those around her. I think her insistence that she fly from Texas to Alaska while her membranes had broken because no one would let her live down having a baby in Texas is all you need to know about this woman's judgment. Sadly, Parnell is just as worthless.

Palin

How come no noticed that Monegan said the other day that NOBODY - not Sarah, not Todd, no one on her staff - nobody asked Monegan to fire Wooten?

Jets??

Andrew, I've noticed on recent news clips since Governor Palin's selection as the V.P. pick that she has developed an affinity for traveling ... on private jets. I know that the spinsters will say, well, she has to travel on a private jet to make all of her campaign appearances, etc., however, this is a person who bet, and won, her political aspirations by maligning a sitting politician for buying and using a jet, and argued that she would be different and would 'always' fly commercial. Just an observation on yet another of her position changes.

Todd's DUI????

Another relevation today in the national news...Todd had a DUI 2 decades ago. What a soap opera.

I have seen many of police

I have seen many of police officers get away with many of things, spraying pepper spray in faces for fun, tasering someone for fun. When will the officers realize they are not god. Do I agree the guy should get fired? I do not know all the facts to make that decision. But the officer has been punished for every stupid thing he has done. There comes a time when people have had enough of the officers games and he is more of a liability to the citizens then an asset. He is a public servent he needs to act like one who cares and does not free lance.

Come on Will........

Did you REALLY "See" police officers getting away with pepper spraying and tasing people for "fun"? I've been a peace officer for the State of Alaska for about 14 years, I haven't seen any of this "Fun".

Come on Jim J.

But have you thought about it? There are thought police too you know! They will all pop up in this campagn.

Palin Ignornace

It does NOT matter if Officer Wooten stands on his head, shoots at the elderly or basks in his own feces...NO ONE has the right to break the law and most of all not the top leader in the state. That argument holds no water what so ever. Sarah Palin, much like John McCain, proves she has horrid judgement and will put her own interest above the country.

Andrew, what would you like to see happen?

Palin could step down "gracefully" from the VP candidacy citing "family" reasons. Is that what you'd like to see? Another question, I don't recall seeing you come out in support of any one of the presidential candidates to-date. That could well be an oversight on my part, but whom do you support?

I'm conflicted. I'm a Republican and I want to vote for McCain but I worry about Palin as VP. The problem is I don't want to vote for Obama so I don't have much of a choice.

I'm going to watch this campaign closely the next sixty days and hope to see some positive things come from McCain/Palin.

Third Party Candidates

I was similarly conflicted in the 2006 AK Gubernatorial election. The gas line was the major issue for me, and Palin was off in the weeds chasing the all-Alaskan line to Valdez (who was going to build this?). Knowles was in opinion the best governor we ever had because he did so much to rejuvenate a moribound oil industry during times of low oil prices. However, he wanted to chase all opportunities for a gas line, i.e. start over. Andrew got my vote when I heard him proclaim in a radio ad that we shouldn't toss out the Murkowski deal, but instead sit down and fix the problems. I knew a third party candidate was probably a "waste of a vote," but at least I was voting my conscience. I think I shall do the same in this year's presidential election. I can't vote for Obama and I won't vote for Palin.

Watch out for that Tucker E.

He's the guy who was in charge of smearing McCain in South Carolina in 2000. (That vicious stuff about McCain's daughter Bridget.) That's right. McCain has hired him to, um, get Mrs. Palin up to speed as VP. I hope everyone involved in this investigation has their own attorney, because I'm wagering they are about to be dragged through the mud(flats) of Alaska.

McCain/Palin Ticket

This is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. McCain should cut his losses and select a new VP. I'm afraid it is only going to get worse from here out. Best of luck to you Andrew. Glad to know people with integrity and intelligence still aspire to be politicians in the US.

Thanks, below

Hey Andrew, I liked your presumed conversation below. Of course, to make it fair to the facts, you would need to reprint it in it's entirely with each of the different players: Sarah, Todd, Annette Kreitzer, Frank Bailey, Tibbles, the babysitter, the driver, Mrs. Peacock with the rope in the billiard room -- but that would take up far too many pages. The conversation I like to imagine is the one that took place at aprox 10:00 a.m. last Thursday morning at a ranch in Arizona. Title: Who Wants to be Leader of the Free World? Senator McCain: So, Sarah. Tell me what you think about America's position in the world? Governor Palin: Well, I think it's so cool that we're like considered a powerhouse. I think we should try to keep it that way. Senator McCain: Good, good. I think so too. What did you think about the Surge? Governor Palin: Well, I'm glad they're evacuatin' New Orleans. That's a cool move for them to make. Gotta hand it to Bobby down there. He's a cool guy. Senator McCain: No, not the surge of waves from Gustav - I mean the Surge in Iraq? Governor Palin: Oh, THAT surge. Well, I haven't thought too much about the war over there except that my one and only son signed up for the military last September 11 and will be deployed this September 11 so we better not be fightin' that war for oil. Heck, we got a lot of oil in Alaska, John. Senator McCain: But what do you think about the Surge? Did it work? Governor Palin: Oh, yeah. It was cool how it's been workin' over there. Senator McCain: What do you think about our dependance on foreign oil? Governor Palin: Well, we have a lot of oil in Alaska and we just need to be able to get it out and send it down to the United States because there's an oil shortage down there. You know, John, the United States is craving our oil and gas so we've been workin' on gettin' it to them, to the United States. (let the reader reference the Charlie Rose interview for context here). Senator McCain: Sarah, I hear you're under investigation, what's that all about? Governor Palin: Oh, that's just some of the Haters who hate me in the Legislature. You know, John, we mavericks can really cause havoc sometimes and the Haters just come after us with a vengeance. So, it's not anything at all. Heck, I even investigated myself with the help of my AG. Have you ever heard of that? But that's how open and honest and transparent I am - I investigated myself. So, no, it's nothin' but Haters who hate me because of what I stand for which is openness and honesty and also, you know, it's just what we reformers have to live with - a bunch of Haters and dumbasses. But it's the price we Reformers have to pay. Someone has to Reform America, John, and if it's not gonna be you and me, then who will do it? It's all about reform, John. Reformin' the system to make it open and honest and transparent. Senator McCain: So, there's nothing to the investigation? You didn't do anything wrong. Governor Palin: Yup, yup. Nope I didn't do anything wrong. Just workin' on reformin' the State. Senator McCain: Is there anything else I should know about? Governor Palin: Umm. Well, one of my close relatives is in a bit of a situation, but we got it covered and it's all cool. We're working on it. You know, also, just tryin' to keep our eye on the ball of reform - you know, reformin' the systems of governmment to keep them, you know, reform oriented and you know, open and honest and transparent. It's all about reform, John. Senator McCain: Sarah, do you want to run on the ticket with me and be one heartbeat away from the most powerful position in history? Governor Palin: Yup, yup. You bet. Let's go reform America and also, you know, bring the reform that I started in my state when I cleaned the place up and sent all those rotten legislaTORS to prison. Yup, I'm your Reform Gal and we're the Reformin' The Nation ticket, you bet. (word to the reader: it was the FBI who has cleaned up Alaskan politics, but don't let the small details throw you).

What a hoot!

Thanks for the guffaws, Yukon Jack. I needed that. You captured her inflections so well that I can hear her voice as I read it.

By the way, Andrew, can you have a techie do something about the way the comments are stripped of their paragraphs marks between preview and final submission (unless html codes are used)? These long running text blocks can be difficult to read. Thanks. You're a dear. ;-)

Yukon Jack is Back

I loved it!!! You really nailed it ROFL!!!

Perfect. I would change one thing though...

Sarah has this habit of saying "BINGO" every now and then instead of yup... It's very unusual... So I would replace a few of the Sarah "yups" with BINGO, and then it reads perfectly...

Tucker Eskew to Sarah's rescue???

Here is an interesting read on Tucker: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/1/164546/5392

Answering the confused

new

Scene: Wooten is a dangerous trooper who threatens death on a man and gets suspended for five days. Governor wonders why issues and behavior like this is not punished more harshly years later." Sarah asked him how behavior like that can be acceptable. Monegan says, "Its not like he killed him or anything. He just said he would. No biggie. Its not my place to get involved." Sarah said, "But you're the Commissioner of Public Safety. These are your employees. Is this ethical and professional behavior?" Monegan says, "Ummm, I don't really care." Sarah said, "You should care. You're fired." Monegan said. "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" Big Deal. He should have been fired.

..Nice story...not how it went down. Maybe this is how it went down:

Governor: He killed a moose without a permit.
Monegan: Yes, but he admitted to that and was punished already by suspension.

Governor: Yes but he killed a moose without a permit. Monegan: Yes but isn't it true your family knew the moose was illegally shot and still proceeded to eat the moose meat and then didn't report the illegal moose kill until a messy divorce two years later?

Governor: Yes but he tased his son.
Monegan: Yes but he admitted to that and was punished already by suspension

Governor: Yes but he tased his son.
Monegan: Yes but didn't your sister wait over a year until a messy divorce to even mention the incident?

Governor: Yes but he's a bad cop.
Monegan: Yes but he has already been punished for all of those infractions he was found guilty of and until he does something wrong, I have no grounds to fire him without violating his employee rights.

Governor: You're fired.

Todd Palin was ORDERED by

Todd Palin was ORDERED by the head of the Governor’s secutity detail, Special Agent Bob Cockrell, to discuss Trooper Wooten with Walt Monegan, as Wooten presented a credible threat to the Governor’s safety. Here’s a direct quote from Special Agent Cockrell, who is now providing security for his sixth consecutive governor: “When made aware of the security concerns regarding a state trooper, I instructed the First Gentleman to contact the commissioner of Public Safety. It is standard protocol to ask every governor about any threats they perceive or have realized. I will not hesitate to set the record straight in answering these false allegations by former Commissioner Monegan.” Hello Andrew, an Australian, another who has become aware of you with the selection of Sarah. I was aware of Sarah previously, Instaupundit poll on VP choice for McCain a few weeks prior to the announcement. Sarah won that poll. Is the above quote true please? I listened to French Hollis on with CC and Monegan. Here the fact of Hollis going on radio with Monegan to discuss the guilt or otherwise of Sarah would be viewed as a major conflict of interest, and certainly Hollis’s claims to be looking for a fair outcome would be rejected. I note that in the program he threw in the possibility of criminal offences as well, which got “CC” excited. He also told WSJ that she might be impeached? Objective, again, simply wouldn’t fly here. But anyway every society is different, though I would argue that ethics have some commonality across societies, and I find Senator Hollis’s a little wobbly. But as to why Sarah’s sister waited, discussions about domestic violence and child abuse are so common here, most would have no problem with the fact of the delay between the offences of Wooten and his wife getting up the courage to bring it on. Also on the CC show his Union was quoted as making the point that tasering for, well fun, was hardly an unusual action by Alaskan troopers, and therefore it was hardly a dismissible offence. If I recall exactly Monegan concurred. We do have that problem also, police not being supportive of the victims of domestic violence and child abuse, hence reluctance to report. However tasering kids for fun would be unacceptable. I note from Wooten’s interview that he did it because the kid wanted it because he was an adrenalin junkie, this is outright child abuse, and like all child abuse the perp doesn’t get it. How can he be trusted any where near children. It would surely be possible that Sarah’s sister and Sarah fully understood the culture of the Troopers and that they would support their mate, not the victim. I thought your first post was extremely gracious and I do understand that you and Sarah Palin are political opponents. But what do you guys think you are doing, saving the world from a bad woman. You might reflect on how historic a moment this selection is, for the world, and what your place in the history of this moment will be. Senator Hollis I would dismiss as a small man with a small mind and dubious ethics, a nobody in history.

Wooten is NOT the issue

I wonder if there is a way to automatically insert "Irrelevant" in each comment that reiterates the bit about "the real issue is why didn't Monegan fire Wooten" or the one about "the real issue is that Wooten shouldn't be enforcing laws". There must be something very difficult to grasp in the idea that Wooten was disciplined by a previous administration; had no further complaints after the original investigation and suspension; and Monegan could not, by law, initiate further discipline of Wooten absent a new allegation. Monegan was constrained by the union labor contract and state personnel laws. No matter how much anyone wished he could have fired Wooten, it was impossible for him to do so.

Palin's brother in law

The brother in law is lucky he wasn't shot. The scum bag tazored his own son. He has a terrible record and should of been fired. If a leader is allowing this nut case to enforce laws, then that leader is showing poor judgement. Sure Palin new because he was family, but how many other loose nuts was the safety commissioner allowing to work in Alaska?

Palin's Troopergate

If the Trooper used a tazor on his step son, he certainly should have faced criminal charges. However, at what point is it ok for our leaders to use extensive tax payer funds and resources to pursue a personal vendetta? I'm amazed at the people I have seen commenting on the internet, and their willingness to overlook this fact. Seems like more of a "ra ra, GO TEAM" attitude to me.

I agree it is wrong to taser

I agree it is wrong to taser anyone unless it's in line of duty or a consenting adult, but we don't know the details, except that Wooten was disciplined for it. By the way, in police training classes, the trainees volunteer to get tasered, so it's not like it's super super super horrible. You know how sons and fathers are, maybe the son wanted to be (tasered), and it started as a playful thing, but still his father would have been wiser to say no. If there was a problem, Palin could have used the court system like the rest of us, instead of using Governor-power to fire someone who wouldn't fire her former brother-in-law. As an elected official,(Palin) is the employee of the taxpayers and can be scrutinized anytime.

Leonard = Hopeless

Andrew How many times can you cover this on your blog ? It is not Trooper Wootens behavior that matters. No one is defending him although his behavior was reviewed and punished. Maybe not to the satisfaction of all. The issue is Governor Palin's behavior which appears to have been dishonest, bullying and vindictive. The investigator appointed by the Alaska State Legislature will determine if she abused her power and to many it appears that she did based on information which has already been made public. McCain has made a big mistake.

I'm not sure the investigation is about that

As has been pointed out, Palin said she could terminate Monegan without cause, and I've heard nothing to contradict that. If that's so, her reason for firing him is not particularly relevant. What's relevant, I believe, for purposes of the investigation is whether she used her office and her staff to exert pressure on a commissioner to interfere with the internal personnel matters of a state department. Also, I believe the investigator is looking at whether the alleged pressure by the administration on Monegan was personally motivated to obtain retribution against someone the governor felt had wronged a family member. The investigation might also be looking into wrongful use of state facilities in furtherance of an abuse of the powers of her office. If, as the governor has asserted, she has the constitutional authority to terminate a commissioner without cause, her motivation in the firing is of little interest; the manner in which she might have attempted to achieve a personal end through means of duress or coercion are of greatly more import. Had the governor's office handled this matter differently from the start, it's unlikely the legislative council would have gotten involved, since Monegan accepted his termination with relative equanimity. But from the start there was an arrogance that guaranteed this would lead to a confrontation: the failure to wait until Palin returned from out of town to terminate Monegan; the initial refusal to offer any reason for the firing other than a statement through a spokesperson about the "new direction" for DPS; the failure to articulate Monegan's shortcomings when directly questioned about it; the fiasco of the hiring and resignation of Kopp; the undisclosed and unprecedented payoff to Kopp; the list goes on. I doubt there is any political angle to the legislative council's action, but I also don't doubt there is a territorial one: Palin's deeds are diametrically opposite to her professed belief in open and "transparent government", and her comments about the legislature over the past year have bordered on insulting. Recall the "someone has to be an adult here" comment; add in the comment about the reason for a direct cash "resource rebate" where she said the public would be able to more wisely spend the money than the legislature would. Palin probably wouldn't be in this position if she once acted in a non-hypocritical manner. The legislature has to deal with her directly, and I think she might have finally worn out her welcome with some of them.

Thank you, Minor

Thank you, Minor. This is succinctly put. And now that the eyes of the nation and the world are riveted to our little corner of it - it is nice to be able to refer friends who keep calling from the Lower '48 to this site to find out info about what has really gone on with Sarah and her investigation the past seven weeks. Yep - if Sarah could have let dead dogs die. But no. That is not her way. She HAS to have the final say, period. She lamblasted Mr. Monegan as soon as she got back up here (after his firing) while he was graciously being silent. It was only once she started droning on and on and on about a "new direction" for public safety as the reason for his firing - and then having the stupifying audacity to release HIS department goals and objectives as "her new direction," that he finally spoke up. I guess for Sarah it wasn't enough that she had an underling fire him without an explanation or any sort of heads up - no, then she was off to pummel him over and over in the puny press of this state just to try and divert pressure off herself. This is just one of my many concerns with Sarah Palin - she sees the world through the eyes of a competitor on a basketball court - there is always a winner and a loser in Sarah's worldview. This is the kind of outlook one needs to play ball - but not to govern, not to lead, not to be a statesman. Sarah will do whatever she thinks she has to to see herself as the "winner" - and because of her worldview, that means she's always casting someone else as the "loser." Just consider her treatment of Lyda Green or Gail Phillips. No one asked Sarah to like these two women personally (although I find there's much to appreciate and value and like about both of them). Sarah could have done herself a great service if she'd shown either of them a postcard-size bit of respect. But this is not Sarah's way. Sarah doesn't approach life from a "win/win" perspective. It is only "win/lose" in her book. And if she doesn't think you're "with" her - then watch out. Mr. Monegan had far too many scruples to serve in her administration. She and her underlings could not intimidate or bully him. Good for you, Mr. Monegan. I can't begin to imagine the pressure you're under these days to shut up or cave in. You, and others like you who will not be bullied, are in my prayers.
