Rebranding Troopergate: A Seinfeld moment

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

On Saturday, Governor Sarah Palin phoned in from a campaign stop in Pennsylvania to answer questions, limit one per reporter, from the local media.

Before she opened the painfully limited question and answer session, she prefaced her answers by attempting to rebrand what has now become known across the globe as Troopergate.

"It’s good to get to speak with you. Let me talk a little bit about the Tasergate issue if you guys would let me," Palin said according to an audio of the teleconference with reporters.

Tasergate?

Palin's clumsy attempt to try and rebrand the three month independent investigation into allegations she abused the power of her office is reminiscent of the Seinfeld episode where George Costanza tries desperately to rebrand himself as "T-Bone" to his co-workers and ends up being branded "Koko the monkey."

The challenge for Palin attempting this tortured exercise is that the contents of the Branchflower report released on Friday leaves no room for rebranding this investigation; it is truly a "Troopergate" affair.

After reading the 260 page report it is clear that we know things today that dispel all of the excuses offered by the governor and raise serious questions about the pursuit of Trooper Mike Wooten, the Monegan firing and her management of state government.

What we know now.....

We know Todd Palin stated in his deposition that he was unaware that Trooper Wooten had been suspended until after Monegan got fired on July 11, 2008.

We know that Walt Monegan testified under oath that Todd Palin knew about Wooten's suspension all along dating back to January 4, 2007 when he met with Monegan in the governor's office. According to Monegan, Palin said he was upset that Wooten got off with a few days suspension, a slap on the wrist, according to Palin.

We know both Governor Palin and Todd have both claimed publicly that they were fearful of Trooper Wooten and only did what they did to protect themselves and their family against a "rogue trooper".

We know that Gary Wheeler, a State Trooper who has been on the governor's security detail since 1981, testified under oath that at no time since Palin has been governor, has her or Todd ever voiced a security concern or fear about Trooper Wooten.

Wheeler also testified that shortly after being elected, the governor voluntarily reduced her personal security detail from six down to three and decided she wanted to drive herself to work everyday.

In fact, Branchflower wrote in his report he doesn't believe the Palins were truly afraid of Wooten:

"I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins' real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family related reasons.

"We know Governor Palin has stated that she replaced Monegan because he wasn't a team player and she wanted the right person in the position, so she hired Chuck Kopp.

We know according to Kopp's testimony that he was formally offered the job four hours before Monegan was fired on July 11, 2008.

We know that when Monegan was fired that afternoon by Palin acting Chief of Staff Mike Nizich, Monegan asked if they already had a replacement and Nizich replied they had a "short list", when in fact they had already formally offered the job to Kopp hours earlier.

We know according to the testimony of both Monegan and Kopp, that the Palin administration was aware of the sexual harassment complaint filed against Kopp back in 2006 after there was a move to bring Kopp on board with DPS shortly after Palin's election. According to Monegan, Palin Chief of Staff Mike Tibbles, upon hearing the news commented that they better steer clear of Kopp for awhile.

We know that although Governor Palin told the news media a week after Kopp was hired, that the sexual harassment complaint from Kopp's past was looked into and found to be unsubstantiated; Kopp testified that in the 30 minute interview before he was offered the job, neither Bailey or Nizich asked him about the sexual harassment complaint even though the administration was told about the complaint back in 2006.

We know Kopp testified that when he received a phone call from Frank Bailey in July gauging his interests in Monegan's job, when he asked why Monegan was being fired Bailey stated that "Todd was mad at Monegan."

We know that Bailey told Kopp that the governor had lost confidence in the Alaska State Trooper's ability to protect her, even though she voluntarily reduced her own personal security detail and her security detail testified she had never once voiced a concern about feeling threatened.

We know that both Bailey and Nizich in their initial discussions with Kopp, brought up Trooper Mike Wooten and the governor's frustration that he was still a Trooper.

We know that Nizich brought up the governor's frustration with Monegan not making the state jet available to the governor on demand when in fact Monegan had already supplied the governor's office with data showing the exact usage of the jet. 40% used by the governor, 40% used by the Dept. of Corrections to transport prisoners and 20% split between trooper calls for service and contract work for federal agencies contracted to police fisheries.

We know that after Frank Bailey's infamous recorded phone call to State Trooper Rodney Dial, he received a stinging rebuke from Deputy Commissioner John Glass.

We know that although Governor Palin told Kyle Hopkins of the Anchorage Daily News that Frank Bailey acted on his own, Glass testified that when he asked Bailey why he would call a Trooper outside the chain of command, Bailey responded that Governor Palin "felt good and was comfortable' about Dial because they had attended the same church in Wasilla.

We know that Glass went on to testify that he felt that the phone call from Bailey to Dial was a result of a conversation that the governor had with Bailey and that he felt when talking to Bailey about the phone call he was talking to the governor. We also know that during Bailey's taped phone call to Trooper Dial, he mentioned more than once he was calling on behalf of the governor and Todd.

We know that Monegan, Glass and others warned both the governor and Todd about their pursuit of Wooten. They were warned about the legal consequences of illegally pursuing a classified employee and attempting to violate his rights.

"This conversation is discoverable ... You don't want Wooten to own your house, do you?" Monegan warned Palin's Chief of Staff Mike Tibbles once.

Another exchange had Glass warning Bailey that continuing to pressure anyone and everyone in the matter would end in "an unbelievable amount of embarrassment for the Governor and everybody else".

The real story...

The pursuit of Wooten wasn't about a fear for the safety of the first family, it was an attempt to get him fired so he couldn't pay spousal support and Sarah's sister (Molly) would get custody of the children.

During the custody battle, Molly had asked for 55/45 custody and Mike asked for 50/50. Judge Suddock ruled that Molly was under employed and he didn't see the fairness in making Mike pay for Molly's refusal to work a full time job.

According to Branchflower's report, Judge Suddock was forced to comment on the ongoing situation where the Palin's were trying to get Wooten fired.

He went on to say that the Palin's relentless attacks on Wooten should cease and they should remember Aesop's fable about slaying the golden goose. "For whatever reason, people are trying to slay the golden goose here and it tends to diminish his earning capacity."

At the end of the day, Judge Sudduck granted 50/50 custody much to the displeasure of Molly.

We know that both Governor Palin and Todd had an obsession with getting Wooten fired to get even while benefiting her sister. This wasn't about an effort based on concerns for their own safety or the safety of their family, that much we know for sure now.

In finding Governor Palin guilty of abusing her power as governor, Branchflower concluded:

"The evidence supports the conclusion that Governor Palin, at the least, engaged in "official action" by her inaction if not her active participation or assiatnce to her husband in attempting to get Trooper Wooten fired (and there is evidence of her active participation). She knowingly permitted Todd Palin to use the Governor's office and the resources of the Governor's office, including access to state employees, to continue to contact subordinate state employees in an effort to find some way to get Trooper Wooten fired."

But more importantly, we know now that  Governor Palin's press release on July 18, stating;

“To allege that I, or any member of my family....directed disciplinary action be taken against any employee of the Department of Public Safety, is, quite simply, outrageous"...

....was, quite simply, a lie.

HINT: the whole Troopergate

HINT: the whole Troopergate story begins - Once upon time there was a divorce that didn't set well with certain family members......

Rebranding Troopergate

Thanks again Andrew for the fantastic job you are doing in keeping those of us in the lower 48 informed of this matter. Your work is excellent and your efforts greatly appreciated.

Monegan for Governor?

Granted I can't sign a recall petition for Koko and I can't vote in your fine state ...but, based on what I've seen of him, perhaps Monegan should consider running for governor? After all, if she can get elected (without a shred of ethics), he certainly would win in a proverbial and literal landslide.

Teflon Queen

Shadow Governor and Teflon Queen. Don't we deserve better?

Teflon Queen

What do they say you are who your friends are. Governor Palin's web of lies are never ending. Doesn't all these developments make you want to know what you don't know? She will only be the teflon queen if we let her be once they put a fork in her in November and she comes back to try to governor. She is going to find it hard to rally the same support and remain the enigma she was. If we let her slip out of this noose and forget we deserve better shame on us!

My Message to Alaskans

How can some of you continue supporting Sarah Palin when she lies to you so frequently and blatantly? How can you trust someone so unethical and dishonest to run your government? How can you ever know when she's lying to you or actually telling the truth about significant government affairs? Your approval ratings are a disgrace to your state.

Believe me, we know! We

Believe me, we know! We know! And I for one, am SO anxious for both she and Todd to come back to Alaska after having lost on November 4th, to a resounding butt kicking. I am hoping to run into them on the street so I can tell them both just how disgusting I think they are. Now of course, being the narcissist she is, she'll run for President in 2012...as if this crap wasn't embarrassing enough? Thanks to all you in the Lower 48 who read Andrew's blog and show your common sense rather than those that follow this woman like sheep being led to the slaughter.

Alas

You are correct, it is an affront to many of us that can see this woman for what she is; a lying, ignorant, incompetent, vindicative woman that cares nothing about Alaska or Alaskans. She would dump the whole state in the sewer if it would serve her ambitions. She uses everyone, including her kids to further her ambition. Nothing is beneath her.

Reformers?!

The "Truth Tandem" of McCain/Palin is believed to be the first ticket in American history in which both candidates were found to have violated ethics standards before a national election. Reformers, eh? How 'bout violators of the public trust! WINK - WINK :)

Chameleon=Ability to Rebrand

On October 10, The Guardian posted a long but worthwhile read: “The chameleon: who is the real Sarah Palin” by Ian Cobain. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/oct/10/uselections2008-sarahpalin1

Still Waiting to Exhale...

I am pleased with Branchflower's report and Palin's attempts at minimizing it's conclusions discredit her further. Some are claiming that she could not have violated ethics because such a violation would come at a financial gain. The pursuit of Wooten would have provided such a financial gain to the Palin's in the form of a custody decision and child support payments. Violating ethics, to me, does not only constitute a financial gain, but a personal gain. This was personal from the beginning. I guarantee that if Palin had been forced to testify, Todd's responses would have been different. Polls show McCain and Palin are falling behind Obaman with 320 electoral votes going to Obama and McCain falling very short at 150. When she comes back to Alaska, she will not have the confidence she once had and her political career will be over in this state.

Is there some way to Replace Palin as Governor?

--She is damaging the State with her Economic Policies --She is a Liar --She isn't 'tough' ... She is 'Insane' --She has crapped all over the Troopers --She 'Isn't a Person Concerned about Alaska; She is concerned about her own political career and will drop Alaska at the next invitation. --She hies Cronnies from High School --We need a "Leader" Not an Immature Narrcassit to lead Alaska. --"Now where is that New York RangerJersey?"

Palins Are Shameless

The Palin's and their tribe of wacky loyalist Kool Aid drinkers know no shame. Rebranding Trans Canada as TC Alaska and now this sillyness are indicative of the disrespect this mob has for the public. Meg Stapleton and AK Jim (Todd's Snow Machine Buddy) will charge off with any mindless banter they are fed. What make me the most uncomfortable is the Palins sick use of their children at every opportunity. Dressing them up in whatever costumes give the most political advantage and marching them around like tools of the Palin Populism at all cost machine. Hockey Jerseys, Cheese Heads, Bib Overalls, Little Princess Outfits - there are no boundaries or morals just whatever helps Mommy. I even heard Sara quoted as saying she would like to go on SNL - This is an all time low - a show where the specialty is potty humor and even did a skit about Todd Palin having sex with his own children. Yes great choice there Sara, how desperate can the Palins be for attention to even consider this ??Consistent with her shallow pandering on the Bob and Mark show.

She gets more pathetic by the day

Her so called press conference, that consisted of five minutes and three questions just drives the nail home. The Governor is either dilusional, or a pathological liar. She doesn't consider Meg Stapleton's vial spew as an "attack." What has become of our integrity when we condone such behavior? I guess cute gets you a long way in this world.

Arrogant and Cavalier

Her "whitewash" of the Branchflower is indicative of how she would act if she, God help us, were elected VP. Her hubris matches that of Dick Cheney. She embraces what she likes, reframes it in the best possible light towards her, then discards the negative or differing opinions. This is way too reminiscent of the build-up to the Iraq war.

PATHOLOGICAL LIAR AND SOCIOPATH?

SOCIOPATH: manipulative and conning, glibness and superficial charm, grandiose sense of self, pathological lying, shallow emotions, need for stimulation, callousness, lack of empathY, poor behavioral controls, impulsive nature, irresponsibility, unreliability, lack of realistic life plan, parasitic lifestyle, changes image as needed to avoid prosecution, authoritarian, secretive, does not perceive andything is wrong with them, paranoid, seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned or admired, goal of enslavement of their victims, exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim's life, has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim's affirmation (respect, gratitude and love), ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim, unable to show remorse or guilt, extreme narcissism and....last but not least....MAY STATE READILY THAT THEIR GOAL IS TO "RULE THE WORLD."

Sarah: The Sociopath

Apparently, you've met Sarah.

God Bless Our Troopers

I am not finished the report but one item stood out for me: Monegan's concern that the Troopers contract was not commensurate with other recent contracts because of the Wooten Affair. I thought, how dare Palin take this out upon the police force. She wouldn't come to honor our fallen Troopers because of an honest error over a photo. I can't imagine how this breakdown of trust has hurt the morale of our state law enforcement. It is an even greater tragedy when we understand that this affair wasn't due to fear of Wooten but a malicious desire to hurt his career. I fell especially bad for Mr. Monegan who is clearly a man who cares about the law and the safety of the citizens here. He has independent judgment and integrity. He was not obsequious and therefore did not fit well into the Palin administration. I cannot believe how so many good people have been hurt and smeared over this personal vendetta. America need leaders at the moment. Unfortunately, Palin has disqualified herself.

palin hypocrisy

What I do not understand is this: why does the media, those who agreed to the 1 question each rule, continue to allow these types of restrictions? I suppose its easy for me to say "stop covering Palin", I'm not in journalism, but for the life of me, I cannot understand how ethical journalists allow this. I agree she looked like an absolute FOOL by what she said, but she was just given a platform for self promotion.

Palin and Media

I agree and can't understand why they do her the courtesy of fully covering her stump speeches when she won't return the courtesy. I think they're afraid of turning viewers off if they stand up to her. At this point, I suspect they'd win over a bunch of new viewers by insisting that she act like a responsible candidate for VP instead of a self-centered diva.

Liability

The report is clear to myself and many friends, we have discussed this topic, from both points of view. After the report came out it looks like just what you have been reporting all along and has been known by those involved. I look next to see Wooten file suit against at least six people and possibly more. If I was advising the Gov. I would tell her she needs to admit she was wrong and let the buck stop. I believe folks will forgive (unlike all the abusers) but this needs to stop now. I would also advise her to issue an executive order mandating all executive appointed employees to recieve at minimum a 2 day class on the State Ethics Act so that folks new to government would know the rules. Along with that I would hold accountable the most serious offenders, and stop all appearances of Todd working in the office.

Palin

I would like to see a drug test. What Happy pills can make one respond to this Troopergate report like Sarah Palin did. Please have someone read this report very slowly to Sarah. Maybe put the highlights on 3 X 5 notecards.

What's the difference

What's the difference between George W. Bush and Sarah Palin? Lipstick.

Shouldn't that be...

What's the difference between Richard Nixon and Sarah Palin? Lipstick and a lower IQ.

"tasergate"

For the sake of documenting the trivia, I'll just note that the term "Tasergate" actually worked its way up the food chain from a conservative blogger....

Not the Change We Need

McCain and Palin are dishonorable public officials running a dishonorable campaign. McCain was caught breeching ethics in the 1980s with the Keating Five and Palin has breeched ethics with Troopergate. At this time in our nation when the moral fiber of our international poicies and our economic policies have been tattered to shreds by the ethical short comings of Bush/Cheney, it is stunning that the Republican party would nominate two individuals who have such trouble telling right from wrong. We need change in Washington and McCain/Palin are just more of the same.

Wondering

Probably there is no way to know this answer for certain but I'm wondering if KoKo the Monkey...err...I mean Sarah Palin chose not to personally interview Kopp for the job because she knew of the sexual harassment letter in his file. If she didn't interview him she could always later somewhat credibly make the claim that she didn't know anything about that letter. Does every step she takes always involve some sort of scheming and subterfuge? Also, I would like the people of Alaska to ask the Palin administration why Chuck Kopp got a $10,000 severance payment for about 10 days on the job...a job he apparently never was qualified for in the first place. I note that KoKo...I mean Sarah gave Walter Monegan no severance pay at all--but of course she set up his firing to *look like* he resigned by extending him that lesser job she knew Monegan wouldn't take. Like I said, does this woman plot every one of her vile moves 6 steps in advance?

easy...

I M P E A C H

Was it OK for her to fire monegan

in part because he'd not fire Wooten? Shouldn't there be laws on her anointed doing their jobs correctly? She can get the legislature to create laws that make firing all officers who do their jobs incorrectly and who are on power trips easier, but she can't go retroactive. Someone like Wooten would have eventually hung himself.

I M P E A C H

Just curious, as someone who lived in Alaska for six years -- years ago. . . but still have an affinity with Alaska and Alaskans -- Can someone tell me how this woman became the governor of Alaska?? I'm embarrassed. . .
