Sept 19: As expected, none of the state employees who were issued subpoenas appeared this morning for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing investigating Governor Palin's firing of former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.

Committee Chair Hollis French read from a prepared statement and did not take questions.

French stated that of the fourteen subpoenas that were issued, six were served and seven were not and the last was for cell phone records for Frank Bailey that had been turned over to the special investigator Steve Branchflower by the cell phone company.

In addition, French said that John Bitney, Palin's former legislative liason, had already appeared and given a deposition to Branchflower and another person subpoenaed, Murlene Wilkes, an owner of a workers compensation claim adjustment firm that was allegedly pressured by the governor's office, agreed to show up today with her attorney.

For those that ignored the subpoenas, French said the legislature would consider taking action against them.

French finished his statement by saying that Branchflower would continue with his original timeline and expected the report to be released on October 10, 2008.

Did we expect different

Looks like as long as people like Bailey are still on the payroll they won't talk. Why talk and loose a fat paycheck while sitting home or selling coffee over at his stand on Brayton Dr? Wish I could sit home and collect a paycheck for drinking coffee...

The Change We've All Been Waiting for... NOT!

How refreshing to see the "Change" in the McClown Republican party. what a crock, it's ALL about obfuscation, denial and blaming someone else for their woes. As usual - "small man" politics from a "small" man. Who do they think they're kidding? Hold them all accountable you honorable Alaskans.

French

French needs to take action against those who refuse to testify. State law is clear. The Legislature has the power to issue subpoenas, and there are criminal consequences for those who fail to comply with those subpoenas. As such, jail time may be in order for this gaggle of Palin cult worshipers who are refusing to comply with state law, in order to protect the "image" of Sarah Palin. If French does nothing, the Lower 48 McCain-Palin campaign folks have effectively neutralized the powers of our state govenrment. No matter what side of the fence you stand on in Alaska -the one thing none of us can stand is someone from the Lower 48 telling us what to do and when we can do it. Consequently, French cannot allow these idiots to sabotage the powers of the Alaska state government with their bullying efforts through the media and courts. I would posit one more thing. I believe those cell phone records, and Bitney's testimony alone will reveal some pretty nasty conclusions regarding the actions of Sarah Palin with regard to Trooper Wooten. And I would suggest that Branchflower's Report should be released on time -with or without the testimony of the Palin cult worshipers. Last thing is this: Sarah Palin doesn't give a rats ass about Alaska. She has used Wasilla, and now the State -to further her own image and political aspirations. Enough is enough.

I am above the law, or I am not a crook, or both

The state employees involved apparently forgot that their duty is to the US and Alaska constitutions and US and Alaska laws, not to the governor or any person. If they (or the McCain campaign) feel that subpoenas are illegal, they deal with it by going to court and getting a judge to agree. The fact that O'Callaghan/Van Flein and other McCain operatives are not taking that step indicates that they know they have a loser on their hands.

Palin's own words about the matter

When serious allegations such as these are made against the state’s top public officials, Alaskans deserve to know that the law is being followed and that allegations are investigated independently. To do any less undermines Alaskans’ confidence in their government. Alaskans deserve to know the truth….neither the attorney general nor the governor [should have] an active participatory role in investigations concerning their own actions…Having a lawyer hired by the governor attempt to investigate…is not only not an “independent” investigation; it presents impossible conflicts of interest in the investigation itself… Alaska deserves better." Exerts from the letter that made Sarah Palin the famous ethics watchdog. Letter from Palin (RE: Renkes) December 10, 2004

Nice catch

We'll see if the MSM picks up on that nugget.

Thank you

I had felt alone in that no one else had pointed out the extreme shortcomings in the AG's reasons for the state employees not responding to the subpoenas. Since when is it even remotely reasonable to claim "loyalty" to a particular individual (any individual) as a legitimate excuse for violating the law? Especially when that loyalty is used as an excuse to assist in covering up what may potentially be a criminal offense. Furthermore, if there was no reason to believe that their testimony would reveal some wrongdoing, how would it even be a violation of that "loyalty"?

Above the law

No one, but no one, is above the law. What we need is a Truth Squad! Oh, I almost forgot! We have one - don't we????? http://thepalintruthsquad.com/

Where are the Alaskans?

It seems to me the "Palin Truth Squad" is nothing more than the same political BS that the republicans and democrats seem to specialize in lately. I noted the only Alaskans on this so called truth squad are:

Lt. Governor Sean Parnell, (R-AK)

Meg Stapleton, Former Aide To Governor Palin

Kristan Cole, Lifelong Friend Of Governor Palin

When it comes to Sarah Palin, these people wouldn't know the truth if it hit them right between the eyes.

Truth squad......My head is exploding.......

who signs the checks

Since these people are above the legislative law and the like. I want to know who signs the checks that pays the salaries of these people. If it is the State of Alaska I want to know why they are not fired for insubordination...what is good for the goose is also there for the gander. I want them fired, as a citizen of this state and one that teaches my kids to be responsible for their actions I want these people dealt with-

Is it not unlawful to skip

Is it not unlawful to skip court?

Public Service

Mr. Halcro, Given the current bizarre circumstance - that Ms. Palin (and to God knows what extent, her husband) is a nominated candidate for the vice-presidency - your page is a great public service to the citizens of the 49 states who do not know the Palins. I am sure that it is for the citizens of Alaska as well, although, entertaining as your politics are, it wouldn't matter quite as much if their exploits were confined to your majestic state. In any case, I appreciate what you are doing, and I am referring as many people as possible to your account of the whole affair. Thank you, Michael Peffley Harrisburg PA

Alaska First

As the Alaska legislature considers what to do about enforcing these subpoenas, its members need to also consider what's best for Alaska. Based on polls and pending investigations, it looks like the state's congressional panel may be majority Democratic. There's at least a 50/50 chance of getting Ms. Palin back and Obama running the federal administration. Current polling indicates that the Democratic majorities will be bigger in the next Congress. If the people being registered by the Obama campaign vote, they may even gain a filibuster-proof majority. These will be the people making decisions about earmarks and other appropriations for Alaska. While it would be nice it they didn't hold a grudge, after the ugliness of the past 20 years and the abuses of power by the Bush administration, I wouldn't predict it.

Yep, I'm with you, guessing

Yep, I'm with you in guessing that we're heading for some tight times. But I imagine Rep & Dem alike will be resistant to sending money our way. Intentional or not, Ms Palin threw our entire state under the bus when it comes to federal funds. At this point, thanks to Palin's choice of talking points about our State, I fear many look on us not as a state with unique challenges - like minimal infrastructure, isolation, high assault/rape stats, eroding coastline, extensive geography - but as a rich, corrupt, welfare state greedy for more wasteful federal handouts. If I lived in one of the L48 states struggling to make ends meet, paying higher and higher state income taxes while Alaskans get a check just cuz they live here, I'd be questioning federal payments to AK, too. Add in the federal financial crisis - we're all gonna be tightening our belts.
