Sept 13: Fact Check

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

Watching the last twenty four hours of events, interviews and press releases, we take some time to offer up some fact checking.

From Troopergate to Charlie Gibson's interview with Governor Palin, we find a few statements and answers that test the boundries of truthiness.* (*Copyright. Stephen Colbert 2005)

On Troopergate; yesterday lawmakers voted to issue supoenas to thirteen individuals including Governor Palin's husband. Todd Palin has long been rumored to have had a key role in pushing members of his wifes staff to take action against Trooper Wooten.

Todd Palin is listed among in the official call log as making three phone calls to one of Governor Palin's aides, who then communicated with Bailey prior to a recorded phone call that outed Bailey and proved he was lying about never pressuring anyone to take action about Wooten.

Issue: After the joint judiciary committee meeting, Lt. Governor Sean Parnell issued this press release:

As a lifelong Alaskan and public servant, I'm disappointed by the complete hijacking of what should be a fair and objective process. It is troubling to see partisan Democrats and Obama supporters abuse their power, the legal system and trust of Alaskans to smear Governor Palin to score political points.

Arbitrary deadlines, inappropriate public comments and secret deals between Senator French and "independent" investigator Branchflower, have turned this process into a complete farce. This use of government power for political gain is an embarrassment to Alaska and the landmark ethics reform our state has achieved under Governor Sarah Palin.

Fact: This is sappy politics from Parnell, who will become governor if McCain wins.

The committee who voted to support the supoenas included four Republicans, all conservative, all McCain supporters. On my radio show following the hearing, Representative Jay Ramras (R-Fairbanks) said any allegations of partisianship were insulting.

"I've had a McCain sign in my yard since August 21 and I'm a proud supporter. My committee is comprised of staunch Republicans who also feel that this process is about getting to the facts."

And as far as Parnell talking about landmark ethics reform; this is a candidate who during his run for Lt. Governor back in 2006 took thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the same good old boys that Palin is now saying she took on. The same good old boys who have been indicted by the FBI.

And although it took the raids by FBI of state lawmakers offices for Parnell to return the donations, over his career the folks from Veco have been one of Parnell's greatest sources of campaign cash when he was a state legislator back in the 90's.

Issue: During the joint judiciary committee meeting yesterday, special investigator Steve Branchflower mentioned the need to supoena Murlene Wilkes, the owner of Harbor Adjustors, who has a contract with the State of Alaska to process claims for workers compensation.

Branchflower said there appears to have been some pressure put on the company from the governor's office to deny Trooper Wooten's workers compensation claim. The admission came from an employee of Harbor Adjustors, who apparently refused to go along with the pressure to deny the claim.

Fact: This is an email I received on August 18:

Item that may be of small interest to you, the ADN has had it for a week and done zero with it.

Officer Wooten had a workers comp claim on a back injury that went through Harbor Adjustors (Murlene Wilkes).  Skinny is that the Gov's office advised his claim should be denied.

Gave the claim office photos of the officer on a snowmachine (undated/Palin-family taken shots)

HA handed it over to legal to handle (Murlene didn't want to get in the middle of what was obviously something personal, and as her only source of income is with a vindictive State gov contract, doesn't want to come out on this issue).

End of day, Wooden got pennies on the dollar for his claim, they wouldn't even pick up for the chiropractor.

Issue: Governor Palin's interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson regarding the Troopergate investigation.

GIBSON: The -- you mentioned the personnel board, it's a bipartisan legislative group, that's working at it now, which you said was fine, until you got named as the vice presidential nominee, and then you said the personnel board ought to handle it.

PALIN: We've said all along that … the personnel board is the appropriate agency or board to inquire -- our state statute says if there is a question about actions of the governor, lt. governor, or attorney general, you go to the personnel board. So we've said all along that that's appropriate …

Fact: Never....never had Governor Palin or her staff mentioned they felt the personnel board was the appropriate agency until after she was selected to become John McCain's running mate and was looking for a way to delay and stall the investigation.

In fact, the joint judiciary committee had a hearing scheduled for August 18, to discuss issuing supoenas, but the meeting was cancelled after the governor vowed to cooperate fully.

Issue: Governor Palin's interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson regarding the economy and budgeting.

PALIN: Reduce taxes, control spending, reform the oversight and the overseeing agencies and committees to make sure that America's dollars and investments are protected.

GIBSON: So let me break some of those down. You talk about spending. How much smaller would a McCain budget be? Where would you cut?

PALIN: We're going to find efficiencies in every department. We have got to.

GIBSON: So you'd take military off the table, the veterans' benefits. That's 20 percent of the budget. … Do you talk about entitlement reform? Is there money you can save in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?

PALIN: I am sure that there are efficiencies that are going to be found in all of these agencies. I'm confident in that.

GIBSON: The agencies are not involved in entitlements. Basically, discretionary spending is 18 percent of the budget.

PALIN: We have certainly seen excess in agencies, though, and in -- when bureaucrats, when bureaucracy just gets kind of comfortable, going with the status-quo and not being challenged to find efficiencies and spend other people's money wisely ... then that's where we get into the situation that we are into today, and that is a tremendous growth of government, a huge debt, trillions of dollars of debt that we're passing on to my kids and your kids and your grandkids ... It's unacceptable.

Fact: During the 2006 gubernatorial campaign for governor, Sarah Palin spoke often about how she was going to cut state spending, review agency operations then prioritize state spending and cut those services that were not "constitutionally mandated". The words "finding effeciencies" seemed to be laced in every speech.

In January 2007, Governor Palin's initial budget proposed reducing state spending by $150 million for the fy08 budget. Six months later she signed the largest budget in state history. And although most of the press focused on the $231 million she vetoed from the capital budget, the fact is both the operating and the capital budgets came in at a combined $350 million higher than what she promised.

Along that same failed promise came the rate of savings. While saving for the future was the clarion call in justifying cuts to the capital budget, the $127 million she had promised to save ended up being just $5.6 million according to the Office of Management and Budget.

In December 10, 2007 Governor Palin introduced her administration's proposed fy09 operating budget. The administration touted a plan to hold operating state operating expenses to just a 4 percent increase,

However when Palin's budget proposal was analyzed by the legislative finance division, the administration's budget was found to be a 15 percent increase in spending, not the 4 percent as was originally advertised.

In an interview in March of 2008 with Anne Sutton of the Associated Press, Palin's Budget Director Karen Rehfeld said, "Until Alaskans decide what public services they don't want us to deliver any longer as a state, any significant reduction in the operating budget is going to be difficult."

Three months later Governor Palin signed the largest operating budget in the state's history at $6.1 billion, a 9% increase over her previous record budget.

How can all this be?

I don't understand what's going on at all. How can it be that a party now running on Obama's platform of 'change,' can present candidates with these kinds of records? And, many seem to be falling for it. I don't understand how the "family values" candidates, the religious candidates can lie every single day since the nomination of Palin. I don't understand how someone who would support charging rape victims for post-rape testing can claim to care about the people. I don't understand how a war-hero can vote against funding benefits for vets and then run on his POW history. I don't understand how John McCain can vote so many times against funding alternative fuel and power sources and against raising the minimum wage and claim to be a "reformer." I don't understand how Palin can run on a platform of fighting corruption and secrecy when she's under investigation for abuse of power and is now stonewalling the process, announcing that she will not talk to an investigator. Transparency is transparency. It would take her an hour to get a copy of her tax history; it has been requested from many and she won't make her tax history 'transparent.' The list goes on, but the one thing that I REALLY don't understand is: how can these and many other conservatives do what they do election after election and square themselves with God? The way they 'preach,' one would think that THEY are the ones who care about people who need a hand up. I just don't understand.

Gov. Palin Veiwed In A New Light

Andrew, do any of the following traits sound eerily familiar? (1) grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements) (2) preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love (3) believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions) (4) requires excessive admiration (5) has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations (6) is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends (7) lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others (8) is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her (9) shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes A DSM IV diagnosis of Narcisstic Personality Disorder requires meeting any five or more of these nine criterea. Sounds like it could very well be someone running this state.

The Gov

Here is what I understand, correct me if I am wrong... -Gov Palin crawled up the backs of those who used to be in power to get where she is today. Is she really different from those men and women? -She destroyed, fired people who got in her way or who had the backbone to disagree with her. Is that a team player? -She put her special needs child and the passengers in "harms way," when she boarded the flight from Texas to Alaska because she did not want him to be born in Texas. Is that someone looking after everyone's best interest? -Did she try to rebuild the Alaska Republican Party after she went against it...now they are running scared and standing behind her...after all, "Party first, values, ethics second. Is this leadership? -She's a working mother of five who instead of choosing to bond with her newly born she took them to work. She and her husband both work...who is really raising the children? Many working mothers do not have the opportunity to take their baby to work or who have the support system that Gov. Palin has...so please stop the "typical" working mom stuff. Hockey mom...I couldn't afford to pay for the uniform, skates or gas to have my children in hockey..again "typical" doesn't fit. In my opinion this race is about pretty vs. ordindary; black vs white; war vs peace; evangelism vs everyone else? Does this sound like the 60's or what? What is frightening to me is that after 40 plus years we haven't gotten it. By the way, she did not know what the Bush Doctrine was...I didn't either but I'm not running for VP in hopes to lead the nation...YIKES. I'm searching for true journalism, is this the only place I can find it?

Under the bus.

I was watching TV last night and saw the special on Mechele Linehan and the interviews with Linda Branchflower who was the investigator when the cold case was reopened and whose efforts were largely responsible for getting successful convictions. This was the wife of the investigator who was hired to get to the truth in the Troopergate case. After reflecting on this for a moment, I realized that Mechele and Sarah have something in common besides using their looks to get ahead. They both are willing to use people and then throw them under the bus at a moments notice in order to achieve their own selfish goals.

I don't speak Alaskan

Would someone please translate Palin's response to Gibson's question?: GIBSON: Homosexuality, genetic or learned? PALIN: Oh, I don't -- I don't know, but I'm not one to judge and, you know, I'm from a family and from a community with many, many members of many diverse backgrounds and I'm not going to judge someone on whether they believe that homosexuality is a choice or genetic. I'm not going to judge them.

Translation

I don't speak Alaskan either but I am still vaguely familiar with English even after all the Espanol going on around me. I don't think Palin actually said anything in any language. She certainly didn't answer Gibson's question about homosexuality.

Sore Loser

Andrew, Your blogs make you seem like you are a very, very sore loser. Why is it that someone who has a Harvard Education can't grasp the obvious? Alaska law provides that political appointees serve "at the pleasure" of the governor. There is sufficient case law to support Palin on this point. Monegan could have been fired with or without a reason. However, you failed in any of your posts to state that Monegan VOLUNTARILY resigned so the whole Troopergate incident is not actually an event. Therefore, your point is moot. If he has any claim, there are procedures for him to file a complaint. He must not have one because the Alaska Daily News ("ADN") quoted him on August 30, 2008 as saying that no one ever asked him to fire Trooper Wooten (who remains employed as a Trooper). If he felt pressured then he certainly could have filed an ethics complaint but he has not to this point. Thus, I see no reason to accept the proposition that Gov. Palin has done anything wrong. If I were you and the state legislature, I would drop this event altogether. It is an embarassment to the entire state as well as the entire Union. And...it is giving people reason to not vote for you again the next time you run for office.

...I'll take that with a grain of salt coming from someone who doesn't even live in my state. Yes, as we've said a million times on this blog, the governor can fire a commissioner without cause but she cannot fire someone who refuses to do something illegal.

Second, Monegan did not resign, he was fired from his position of the Commissioner of Public Safety...so please, stop with the semantics. Even the governor has said he was fired.

In addition, Palin had said repeatedly that she welcomed the investigation...that's why Republicans have supported the process. And also, please remember that if Governor Palin had not been chosen by McCain, you would never have heard of this legislative investigation so please feel free to return to the politics in your own state.

In response to "Get Real"

In response to "Get Real" and sore loser: those writing these comments are not Halcro - we are real people. I, for example, am a (until this election) a registered republican. We are not sore losers, we just don't want our country to go to hell. And I'll say this as many times as it takes: Sarah doesn't fire anybody - she sends her young staffers to do her dirty work, so she doesn't have to look professional people in the eye when they lose their jobs.

Palin

I live in your state. I've lived here longer than you and was born here. Which you, of course, were not so perhaps we should take your remarks with that same grain of salt. Palin clearly no longer has confidence in the impartiality of the investigators. Given that French is on a partisan witch hunt, that is no surprise. Let me ask you a question: If Monegan was under such terrible pressure from Palin and his staff, why didn't he complain? Where's all the emails and letters from him telling everyone how awful he was being treated?

Jim, why doesn't Palin have the confidence of the investigators, especially when just three weeks ago she did? And why did it take her getting selected by McCain to drum up this defense about the legislature not having jurisdiction after not only did she say she'd cooperate but had her AG actually go out and gather evidence?

And just who was Monegan supposed to complain to? His boss whose husband and staff were the ones pressuring him? As far as the emails....according to the press he has turned those over to the investigator.

Confidence

Palin no longer has confidence in the investigation since it has become clear that French is running for Governor and is using this entire process to raise his political profile. And you can be sure that Democrat party officials are on the phone to him constantly: "Just keep digging here and throwing mud around and drag this out as long as you can. We can offer some help with the final report, it has to include language the public will understand, stuff that goes over big in sound bites. Conspiracy, coverup, tentacle of lies, all of those should be in the first paragraph." "Once you file, we'll be there with the party checkbooks, maybe even have President Obama make a joint appearance...." This whole process has been dragging on for months as French broadens the scope and keeps kicking over more rocks and looking behind the door. Palin wants someone other than French handling this deal since it is clear that French has already made up his mind and will issue a strongly worded rebuke. He's just trying to milk the situation for all its worth and delay the release as close to the election as he can. Everyone knows what happened. Palin and her associates sent numerous messages to Monegan that strongly suggested he fire an employee. NOBODY ever asked him to fire Wooten, just pointed out the obvious deficiencies in his performance and character. Monegan chose to ignore these suggestions and got fired. This leads to a number of conclusions: 1. The pressure wasn't that strong 2. Monegan was more afraid of the Trooper's union than his boss 3. Monegan was perfectly willing to keep a marginal employee in his position because cops stick together Palin fired Monegan. Absolutely her right to do so. And, one more time, Monegan never said a word about the "pressure." He could have called you or Fagan or anyone at the ADN and dropped a little hint about this situation but he never did. He apparently felt that he was immune from direction from his boss and that he could run his department as his own personal cops-together empire. Wrong.

French is Impartial

Perhaps you should go back to one of the first ADN articles on the investigation where Hollis French is quoted a saying something to the effect that the investigator to be selected would need to be comfortable saying that nothing illegal occurred. That led me to question his impartiality at that time, especially considering that he consistently voted with the governor's socialistic agenda. Hollis French is 180 degrees out from my viewpoint on fiscal issues, but the man has integrity.

Her dirt piles just keep getting higher

Great as usual Andrew!! I wish I could have seen McCain’s campaign when they got all the dirt that came out on MSNBC about Palin today. Between that article and the one in ADN and of course your wonderful contributions people are finally going to have to admit that Palin is just as dirty as the good old boys she complains about. The only difference is they want money and she wants a dictatorship. This total 100% loyalty and secrecy has to stop. The fact that the head of her budget committee, herself and hubby Todd are the ones who worked on the budget should raise some eyebrows. What the hell is Todd doing involved in the state budget? The fact that anyone who is interviewed must be accompanied by her aids and that her own mother in law can’t speak to the press just shows she has a lot to hide. I love your blog Andrew, but I think you need to add a picture of Palin shaking her fist. In everything she has said on the campaign trail and especially in the interviews with Gibson she shakes her fist every time she lies or s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s the truth. She also does it anytime she doesn’t know what the person is asking or can’t remember what the coaches told her to say. A little .gif file would be perfect next to each of her lies. http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/522556.html http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26691018/

French

Curiously, Andrew and ADN seemed to have missed this: http://townhall.com/columnists/AmandaCarpenter/2008/09/13/obama_partisan_tampers_with_palin_subpoena_list A Friday hearing revealed that an Obama partisan has manipulated an independent investigator’s subpoena list for a controversial inquiry against GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The investigation is intended to determine whether Palin abused her office by firing Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Palin says she fired him over budget issues. Her foes believe the firing was due to Monegan’s unwillingness to fire Palin’s former brother-in-law State Trooper Mike Wooten, a man who has admitted to “tasering” his stepson, illegally shooting a moose and has been accused of threatening his former father-in-law with violence and drinking in his police car. Investigator Steven Branchflower admitted he had ceded control of his subpoena list to Sen. Hollis French (D.) during Alaska’s Joint Judiciary Committee September 12 hearing that was scheduled to approve subpoena requests. [CLICK HERE FOR AUDIO.] French is a partisan who has endorsed Palin’s Democratic presidential ticket rival Barack Obama for president and is actively supporting his candidacy. Lawmakers approved 13 of Branchflower’s subpoena requests that day, which included one for Palin’s husband, Todd. Four other subpoenas were approved for aides Branchflower believes participated in a meeting called by Palin’s former chief of staff Mike Tibbles where Wooten’s firing was allegedly discussed. Rep. David Guttenberg (D.) asked Branchflower why he was requesting subpoenas for only those people attending the meeting and not Tibbles himself. Branchflower said he would “have to defer that question to Mr. French.” “I put the list together with, talking to Mr. French,” Branchflower added. Sen. Gene Therriault (R.) told Branchflower, “I don’t understand why you would have to defer that question to Sen. French. If it’s your list you’re in complete control of the list, then why can’t you answer the question?” Branchflower had no explanation. He only offered, “I’m not sure why his name was removed. My initial request was to have him on the list.” At that point, French interjected. “It appeared to me there wasn’t the political will to subpoena Tibbles.” “Something’s fishy here,” Therriault replied. “I mean either Mr. Branchflower conducts his investigation without direction, and now we know he’s been directed on the date and changing what he’s doing and how he’s doing it because of the time pressure he is feeling. And now we’re hearing that people that he’s trying to get information from, there’s direction going on on that, too.” Indeed. Although the investigation is far from concluding, French has suggested it may culminate in an “October surprise,” perhaps even Palin's impeachment as Governor-- a game-changing outcome that would certainly increase the Democrats chances of winning the White House in November. The final report, which French has already described as “damaging,” is set to be released on October 31, four days shy of the presidential election

JimAK

Hey - you know if the Queen herself would just say Stop - let's sit down and tell the truth (all of us) and see what we can do to make it right - this would all go away. If she has nothing to hide then why not? If she is innocent - let the report come out. She cannot do that because when it comes out what all she did along with her bully husband - she may not be asked to pose for Vogue - She might have to pose for the Enquirer.

Tibbles was deposed on Friday

My understanding is that Mike Tibbles was deposed on Friday afternoon. Since he went there voluntarily, there would not be a need to subpoena him.

Governor Truthiness

Y'all know what's really scarey? A full 45% of the people taking the KTVA online survey believe that Sarah Palin is ready to lead the country! Even if you feel pressured to vote for Governor Truthiness, you've gotta admit that there's no way she's the right person for the job! Vogue magazine, maybe. People, US, National Enquirer, sure. Cabinet meetings? In charge of the FBI and CIA? Proverbial 'finger on the button'? Ready? Um, well, maybe not so much.

Governor Truthiness

Something else is interesting. When Troopergate was broke - a lot of polls were done by various TV & Radio Stations. 79% percent of the people thought she was telling lies on that. As many people who liked here thought she lied. How's That?

Thanks

Andrew, Thanks for all your information and keeping us in the lower 48 informed. Palin is one scary person, and only those willing to speak out against her will save this country from her. Thanks

Thanks.

Thanks, Andrew, for continuing to try to separate fact from fiction. Though I didn't vote for Palin, I'd have to say she hasn't been the disaster I had expected (how's that for a backhanded complement?). What I am totally shocked by, however, is her continued and blatant lies on the campaign for VP. She looks straight into the camera and lies lies lies about her record. I mean it's laughable that she says she "championed earmark reform in Alaska." OMG, this from the governor of the state with the most earmarks per capita of any state in the nation? C'mon, every Alaskan knows it's a LIE -- not a fib, not misspeaking, not a debatable point. I just don't understand it. She has a record she can run on, it's not a terrible record, why doesn't she run on it instead of making stuff up?? "I told Congress thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere" -- OMG are you kidding? Again, everyone in Alaska knows that's just not true, plus there are documents to prove it's not true. Doesn't anyone care about the facts? If people want to vote for her because they support her policies, I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem if they're voting for her because they think she's some upstanding hockey mom, regular gal, "lookin for efficiencies" anti-earmark reformer -- 'cuz those just ain't the facts. Thanks for sticking to the facts. And don't be disheartened by those "you're just a sore loser" comments. You're doing great. The nation needs to know that facts.

Facts are sometimes more gray than b&w

Earmark Reform: True, in that she implemented a strict downsizing of what was requested, when compared to Murkowski, and required that any earmark requested must represent a clear national interest. Example: a road in the North Slope area, because it opens up a strategic energy resource is good for the state and US too. The whole issue of Alaska's earmark/population ratio ignores too many other factors to represent a meaningful metric; with a low population and enormous and expensive environment, this ratio will always be unrepresentative of the value of such earmarks. Bridge to nowhere and the thanks but no thanks line. Yes, she exaggerated her decision, but its also true she did direct the project to be shut down in the current high cost ($400 M) proposal. The whole money going back is a muddled mess, since the earmark money was redirected (by Congress) to any other Alaska transportation project (a full year before she took office). With the one exception of the smallest of three earmarks destined for the roadwork for the bridge, which was not changed, and was under contract prior to Palin assuming office. So, yes she killed the high priced bridge, and no she did not send the funds back. It is also true that a new project looking at lower cost bridges or improved ferry options is now underway, something legally necessary or the state will have to reimburse millions for the project started, but not completed. The bridge issue is especially complex because of so many twists and turns, including many long before SP. No sound bite or headline sum up can achieve a fair telling of this complexity. So both sides decompose to the simplest version and in both are elements of accuracy and elements of omitted relevant facts. PS I'm no SP fan, as AH can attest, but felt this clarification is necessary. From someone who has observed these matters close enough to know.

Earmarks

I'm not a politician and also far from a Palin supporter but I think we weaken our case when we make inaccurate claims. I think earmarks are put in by the congressional delegation and not by the governor. While she may have supported and encouraged the earmarks I don't think she actually requested them in a formal sense. I see a difference between backroom scheming and a formal request.

The Law

Among your "fact checks" - do you have any interest at all in the Laws of Alaska? Why does a legislative committee (headed by a political rival) supersede the Laws of Alaska? Please refer to: http://www.law.state.ak.us/pdf/ethics/Statutes-AlaskaExecutiveBranchEthicsAct_AS39.52_.pdf The Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act You are a bright man who knows all this stuff -- you know as well as I do that a "legislative Judiciary committee" has no authority at all. This is a smear campaign against a woman you dislike. You are certainly entitled to dislike her ....... but the Law of Alaska should mean something to you. How can you ask Alaskans to "follow" you when you show no respect for the law at all if it does not suit your purpose? This is looking a lot like "sour grapes" Andrew ... you are destroying your credibility. At the end of the day - you will regret it and will lose the respect you have held by those who do understand that you have always had a better understanding of issues than any other candidate out there. Is it really worth it to give up that respect?

..Your facts and their application are wrong. The Legislative Council. eight Republicans and four Democrats voted 12-0 to start the investigation and the committee appointed French to manage it...so please stop painting it as a partisan affair. In fact on Friday 4 Republicans and 4 Democrats voted to support the motion to issue subpoenas.

During the hearing the legislatures lawyer said the legislative branch certainly has the power to investigate the executive branch.

In addition, even the governor has said she welcomed the investigation. That was until she got chosen and McCain's people changed the strategy.

The Law

I understand about the Legislative council - you are still ignoring that it does not follow the Laws of Alaska. They can vote on anything they wish, investigate anything they wish ..... it has no validity if it does not follow the LAW. The fact that this is a "bi-partisan" council means nothing and you know it. Governor Palin has as many enemies in the Republican party as she does in the Democratic party ... not to mention the "independents". I completely agree that she handled this wrong - she should have told them all at the beginning that she "welcomed any investigation" and directed them to the proper authority to do the investigation, which is NOT a Judicial Legislative council. Especially one that immediately starts talking about impeachment before any "investigation" even starts. This thing is suspect in all ways - the way it started, the Judicial committee instead of the Ethics committee, Personnel Board and AG's office, Branchwater, French and his actions ..... all of it. It's politically motivated. There has not even been a formal complaint by Monegan to the AG's office and it all has to start there - how in the world can you have any kind of "investigation" without a formal complaint or charge? The AG has to be involved at every level or an independent Lawyer/authority in case of conflict. I say again .... you KNOW this, just as you rightfully knew from the beginning that Palin just did not have the background and experience to navigate these dangerous waters. You have the knowledge but she has great people power, she connects with people. She made a mistake because she was sure she was innocent and had no idea this was going to decide the next President of the USA - that's what it's coming to and everyone should understand that. The FED's are going to end up being all over this to find out the truth. You are losing credibility and you WILL regret it. Palin will win this one because at the end of the day ... the Laws of Alaska will be the final authority when it goes to court. At this point -- everyone and his dog is involved and you can bet that someone out there is checking the phone records of all of them. IF they find so much as one call/email to the DNC or the Obama campaign, this turns into a conspiracy charge under the Law. I read in the adn blogs that you were the only "winner" in this deal because all your cars are rented late in the season. That's probably good for business but I suspect that many are going to remember that you were up to your eyeballs in this and when the bill comes due (to the tune of 100's of thousands of dollars) they will remember that you were a big part of it. I'm pretty sure you know the public sentiment on this kind of waste of money. Address the statute and explain exactly why you think the Law does not apply in what is clearly an ethics matter. I posted it in my first post.

Investigation - Parnell & Palin

In my opinion Parnell was taken in the back room and the Governor put her fist in his face and made him read that statement. Come on Parnell you know better. I believe you are better than that. You have a chance to mop up this mess and do the right thing by the DPS. You know her actions are wrong. What are you gonna do if you find out they have a recording of the Queen herself? How will you spin that? I am personally grateful the investigation is going forward. A big thanks to Charlie Huggins for truly being the only Adult in the room. The truth needs to come out and let the chips fall where they may.

Hear! Hear!

"A big thanks to Charlie Huggins for truly being the only Adult in the room. The truth needs to come out and let the chips fall where they may." I, too, am very proud of my District H Senator, Charlie Huggins. He is one of the few to have the ... ahem ... "what it takes" not only to vote to get to the bottom of this investigation, but also to stand up for his constituents and his state and vote against ACES and AGIA.

Having said that, however, were any of you as taken aback as I was by the exchange between Mssrs. Branchflower, Therriault, and French with regard to subpoenaing Mike Tibbles? Up until that moment, I had no reason to be suspect of the integrity of Mr. Branchflower or Mr. French. (Just because Mr. French is a Democrat, doesn't automatically mean that he's a partisan who is "out to get" Gov. Palin.) But, when Mr. Branchflower deferred to Mr. French as to why Mr. Tibbles was not on the subpoena list, I became truly concerned over who, exactly, is running this purportedly "independent" investigation. Any thoughts?

Palin

Governor Palin has turned out to be the biggest liar I have ever seen. Now McCain is picking up on it to. Yesterday on the View - McCain said Palin has never applied for or taken a Earmark as Governor. I am sure that is not true - Andrew could you please list here some of the ones she has applied for and taken so that readers realize just how out of touch these two are. I am a Republican and won't vote for Obama but I do believe people need to know what they are voting for. One thing people are missing to is that because she could not get her way with Monagan she squeezed and cut the "Operating Budget" for AST to the point that our Safety is at Risk.

Palin

So, since you won't vote for Obama (just because you're a Republican?), are you saying that you intend to vote for McCain/Palin even though you know they are liars? Wow.

Alaska Shut Tight?

I understand that no one can talk about Sarah Palin and the scandals because McCain's people are all over the place and will sit with her friends if there are interviews. I realize that voting for her may make you think that you will be rid of her and her sneaky politics but why saddle American with an unqualified treacherous individual?

Wooten's work comp claim

I'm very curious about any pressure the Gov's office may have exerted to deny Wooten's work comp claim. The email you cited says Wooten's chiropractor bill was not paid (which is possible, perhaps because it was not considered "authorized" treatment). The email also suggests Wooten himself was not fully compensated (ie "pennies on the dollar). I find the latter hard to believe, since work comp benefits are generally determined on the basis fo fairly structured statutory formulas, although that does vary by state. That said, I'd be interested in knowing if pressure applied to Harbor Associates, even if it was ignored in some way, would be considered a separate violation of the law--in this case work comp laws--or would it be treated as another incident of "abuse of power"?
