Palin's attack dogs and lies......

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

Like the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, Governor Sarah Palin has finally come up with yet another excuse for why she fired her former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan that she's hoping is just right.

After offering the public a handful of excuses over the last sixty days about why she suddenly fired Monegan, on Monday her attorney and McCain campaign attack dogs settled on claiming that Palin's reason was "Monegan's "rogue mentality."

Oh really, it took Palin sixty days and the help of John McCains campaign to come up with this bizarre explanation?

According to papers filed by Palin's lawyer, Monegan lost his job as public safety commissioner because he resisted Gov. Sarah Palin's budget policies and ultimately showed "outright insubordination."

According to both Palin's lawyer and a McCain campaign spokesman, it was Monegan's "rogue mentality" on budgeting and other policy issues that got him fired in July, not his alleged refusal to dismiss a state trooper who was involved in a messy divorce with the governor's sister.

Ironically, this revelation was released just days after the legislative council heard compelling testimony from special investigator Steve Branchflower that raised such serious questions about the administrations role in trying to fire Palin's former brother in law, State Trooper Mike Wooten, the legislature issue subpoenas.

However, both Palin and her new attack surrogates from the McCain camp should have spent some time vetting both her and her staffs previous statements to the press over the last two months.

On July 14, 2008 Kyle Hopkins of the Anchorage Daily News asked Palin press spokeperson Sharon Leighow about Monegan's firing:

Hopkins: "Was there a personality conflict here? You know, a rift between the governor and ..."

Leighow: "No, absolutely not. I don't know if there's more to add than what I've already told you as far as the governor wanting to change leadership in the public of safety. I don't know if we can point to one specific incident or one particular, specific detail."

In a July 21, 2008 story in the Anchorage Daily News, "The governor says she dismissed Monegan and replaced him with Kenai Police Chief Chuck Kopp last week because she wants a new direction for the department.

Palin has said she wants more of a focus on trooper recruitment and fighting drug and alcohol abuse in rural Alaska. The governor’s spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, said no more details are coming about the reasons for Monegan’s dismissal."

In a July 28 story in the Anchorage Daily News, Palin abruptly fired Monegan on July 11 and later explained she wanted to take the Department of Public Safety in a different, more energetic direction.

And yet according to McCain campaign spokesperson Megan Stapleton at today's press conference, she said that Monegan's "egregious rogue behavior" had become a major issue over the previous eight months and represented the reason for his termination?

But after two weeks and countless press interviews between July 14 and 28, neither Palin nor her staff uttered not one word of Monegan's rogue behavior.

Nor did they even mention the word rogue.

Is this really their final answer?

Then during an August 13, 2008 press conference, Palin reveals a recorded tape conversation where her close aide Frank Bailey is on tape trying to enlist the help of another State Trooper to help get Palin's ex brother in law fired.

In the recorded phone call, Bailey talks about Palin's feelings toward Monegan;  “She (Palin) really likes Walt a lot, but on this issue she feels like it’s, she doesn’t know why there’s absolutely no action for a year … it’s very troubling to her and the family. I can definitely relay that.”

So according to Bailey, the governor "really" liked Monegan's performance, but just not his performance in responding to her wishes to see Wooten out of a job. This was on February 29...and then four months later Monegan is out of a job?

Also during that August 13, 2008 press conference Palin gave more reasons why she fired Monegan.

"And now I want to talk about Walt Monegan. I appointed Monegan as commissioner of public safety because of his grasp of both urban and rural law enforcement issues. Unfortunately as my term progressed, Commissioner Monegan was not making headway on key goals, such as filling numerous trooper vacancies. Alaskans deserve a fully staffed trooper force," Palin said.

Palin's comments however were in complete contradiction to her State of the State speech just months earlier when she told Alaskans, "In Public Safety and Corrections, after years of positions left vacant, we've doubled academy recruits."

Palin then defended her firing of Monegan by saying he wasn't doing enough to combat bootlegging and alcohol problems in rural Alaska. Then she turned around and contradicted herself by saying that Monegan was offered a job where his skills could be better used; in charge of fighting bootlegging and alcohol problems in rural Alaska.

So after firing Monegan for what today is she is calling "outright insubordination" she offered him another job?

Is anybody paying attention to this?

Also during the August 13 press conference she defended her firing of Monegan by saying he was asking for lawmakers for too much money. However records from the State Legislative Finance Division, show Governor Palin proposed a $7.3 million increase to the public safety department budget but the legislature reduced the amount to $6.4 million.

According to one House Finance Committee member, when the  governor's original proposal was being cut by $900,000, she nor her staff said a word while Monegan was begging for the administration to fight for the original amount they requested due to skyrocketing fuel prices and increasing costs. He wasn't asking for more, he was simply asking for the original amount proposed by Palin.

In addition, the Associated Press reported today that the McCain campaign released a series of e-mails detailing the frustration several Palin administration officials experienced in dealing with Monegan. The "last straw," the campaign said, was a trip Monegan planned to Washington in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

First, how is the McCain campaign able to release administration emails when the administration itself refuses to release emails that have been requested by both the press and the public?

Second, Monegan stated on the KTUU News that the trip was authorized and supported by Governor Palin which seems to make sense because Alaska leads the nation in sexual assault.

But even if one was to believe Palin's story, the fact that she'd offer someone who she accuses of having a "rogue mentality" and was  guilty of "outright insubordination" another job in her administration, raises serious questions about her ability to run government.

And by the way, where have I heard that term rogue cop before?

Oh yeah; in the Anchorage Daily News on September 4, 2008: "Palin says she never pressured anybody, doesn't know that anyone on her staff did, and wasn't aware of what Todd was up to. She has called Wooten a dangerous "rogue trooper."

The only thing rogue around here is Palin's imagination and the McCain camps attempt to mislead Alaskans.

Palin

Andrew, As a concerned valley resident, my hat is off to you Sir. Thank you for fearlessly telling the truth. Keep it up, your state, and country needs you. I am a new fan of your show, and your writting.

releasd of e-mails

seems like if she has released other state emails to mccains campaign staff that would make them public. McCains staff probably sifted thru the whole pack and then released the ones benefitting them to the Personal board and still have others. The legislative investigation should look into this aspect.

Good job Andrew!

We are not all blind like JimAK. Palin hasn't kept her promises from the beginning when her platform was of truth and transparency and public safety. Palin makes excuses and scapegoats out of other people and her supporters do the same. I was wondering how long it was going to take someone to get assigned damage control on her mouth. And JimAK if Palin is so honest why does she have sooo many excuses for firing Monegan? Wasn't the first lie legit? If you worked for her and she asked you to perform an illegal act, would you have? Firing Wooten would have been an illegal act. All you have to do is research the documents for Troopergate. Palin is well known here for expecting people to do her bidding and when you don't she throws you under the bus. Have you watched her videos? She and her mouthpieces are always making excuses for her not knowing what goes on in her own administration. Try watching Kopps resignation on youtube. A disgrace! She actually said she didn't believe it and couldn't even look the person questioning her in the eye. She made excuses why someone would make a complaint about Kopp. How would you like to be Kopps victim and hear what Palin said? She didn't know anyone had pressured Monegan and firmly denied it all until Baileys tape surfaced. That is not the only proof of Palins' admitted perceived pressure. Another oops? And why is Bailey on a cushy state paid vacation? Watch the video of her laughing when the radio hosts called Lyda Green a cancer and B**** and Palin laughs. I would say her character is showing and it is very lacking along with any maturity or diplomacy. Has she figured out just what a VP does all day yet? She lies by omission but a lie by omission is still a lie. Not for earmarks but guilty of getting them, bridge to nowhere, put the jet on ebay where it did not sell and when it did it sold for a loss to the state. Oh that's right if you give all the facts they don't make such cute stories do they? Snowmachiners got $34,000 and public safetys' budget got cut 10%. A lot of money in the budget went for a lot of frivolous things instead of where they are needed. Another excuse for firing Monegan was he wasn't filling trooper positions. And now he went to Washington to get funding but she didn't know about it? Wonder who is going to take the fall for that one? Do you know we actually have unmanned units in our correctional facilities? Anyone want to guess what happens when someone gets seriously injured or killed in one of those units? Palins' appointee Commissioner Schmidt who is another of Palins friends, got a very public and overwhelming vote of no confidence yet Palin supports him 100% still, all because he refuses to sit down with the union and discuss safety issues etc. Schmidt has proven to be a liability to this state also. I hope McCain dumps Palin and she has to come back here and get her comeuppance. That karma wheel is going to get her good. Christian? What kind of Christian so blatantly lies as Palin does? And shame on McCain and everyone who supports and condone her lies!

Love your work Shining the light of day on palin

Mr. Halcro - Keep up the good work. I'm following from Arlington, Virginia. What a bunch of skunks - the whole palin-mccain gop group is. and that awful megan stapleton - keep showing how she's lying. unbelievable. I hope you can get some time on maddow or olberman on msnbc so people can find out about these liars. Good Luck - keep speaking the truth. Larry

The "Rove Doctrine"

It’s evident that Gov. Palin is a quick learner. She hit the national stage running as a full-fledge disciple of the “Rove Doctrine” (i.e., It doesn’t matter what you say---your fervent supporters are going to believe anything and your die-hard detractors are going to find fault with everything---just say it often enough with sufficient gusto and perhaps some of it will stick and you’ll pick up a lot of the middle guys). Way To Go, Guv! (hopefully, all the way back to AK)

Attention Salem Moron Association Salem MA

Compared to Obama, Palin is still a saint. Your ticket is America's ticket to a cultural and economic stone age. Obama has not stopped lying from the start. Shame on Sarah for her petty behavior which has given sleazeballs like Salem MA ammunition to use against McCain

If you guys in AK want that

If you guys in AK want that kind of politician running your state, you can have her. But don't come down to the lower 48 and ask us to send you any money and certainly don't send that slimy piece of manure to DC or any other part of the mainland. And while you're at it, if you so wish to secede, be our guest. I would just love to see how you simple folk up there deal with Putin who chews people like Palin for breakfast.

"slimy piece of

"slimy piece of manure....." Why is it that it is always the liberal Democrats who resort to name calling?

Ease up farmer joe!

Most of us here in AK can see through the "transparent" Sarah Palin, and are just as upset as you. As for the ones that cannot, they are just as blind as about half of the rest of our great nation. Yes it is OUR nation, just because your soil is a little closer to the capitol than ours doesn't make it any more American. So sit down and shut it.

What's with the hostility?

Many of us don't want a politician like Palin running our state. There are those of us who don't want her as our governor, much less the VP. I'm not aware that we've 'come down to the lower 48' and asked you to send us money. Those who want to secede from the Union are in the minority as well. And we're not all "simple", NY Farmer. The people on this blog are mostly, JimAK not withstanding, good, decent, intelligent people. There's no need for you to behave like a jerk.

Double Standard?

From what I read, the papers recently filed by Palin's attorneys said something like, even if she did try to have Trooper Wooten fired, it would be excusable because there is a common interest in public safety and she would have been acting in furtherance of that interest by attempting to remove a "rogue" trooper who posed a safety risk. Would not Monegan fall into that same category assuming he was circumventing some sort of procedure (which he denies) by seeking more funding to handle the runaway sex abuse in Alaska?

More coffee needed

The course of this investigation was set as soon as Hollis French realized if he played his cards right, he could end up as governor. Play the part of the reformer/muck raker saving the people, walk right into Juneau. And your "evidence" that there was some vast conspiracy is that Palin was saying nice things about Monegan in public, that she offered him a different job? Please. She's a politician, all of them will put the best possible face on things at all times. French is clearly politically motivated and is getting his marching orders from the DNC and the Obama camp.

She was setting the state

She was setting the state for Monegan, and all of you. She not only duped you guys, all of us were duped. They call her John Sidney McCain III's bucket of fluff............. doesn't bother Palin as long as she gets what she wants. I am proud of you all, standing up and believe me it's not easy, but it is worth it. We are wishing you well, and keep on your straight path, thank you also Andrew.

Truly Unbelievable !!

Palin & McCain's lawyers must think we're ALL idiots. "McCain/Palin......LIES You CAN Believe In!"

job offer

I had the same thought - if he was so insubordinate then why was he offered another job? And the "reason" before this - if he was so lousy at dealing with alcohol in the villages then why was he offered a job as head of the ABC Board? This just gets weirder and weirder.

Am I missing something?

6 weeks later we find out that Monegan was fired because he had the audacity to try and fight for money for more troopers and for help with sexual crimes in Alaska? Aren't we the sex crime capital of the US? Am I the only one that thinks Walt Monegan was on the right track? Perhaps his tactics didn't follow the party line but at least he was trying to make a change in Public Safety for Alaska citizens, something clearly Sarah didn't see as a priority. If there were a check box on my PFD to donate a percentage to doing something about sex crimes in Alaska I would check it. Besides didn't she promise that she was going to work hard to improve public safety and combatting crime in rural Alaska? Was that another one of her "bridges to nowhere"?

The budget struggle makes no sense

...because Alaska has buckets of extra money. Why starve law enforcement of all things? Unless she starved Monegan's budget on purpose to create a conflict, to use as an excuse to fire him.

Priorities

It's all a matter of priorities. Pass out free money to every breathing soul in the state while cutting the public safety budget. That's our Sarah. Remember, she has a reputation as a cost cutter and tax cutter to uphold. Last I checked, however, public safety budgets generally get the full support of the general population.

It has been pointed out

It has been pointed out numerous times: Palin didn't need an "excuse" to fire Monegan, she could fire him at any time without cause.

Mayor Palin vs. Governor Palin

Uhh, this comment about the Pitbull Guv is strange: "Palin has said she wants more of a focus on trooper recruitment and fighting drug and alcohol abuse in rural Alaska. The governor’s spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, said no more details are coming about the reasons for Monegan’s dismissal." Didn't Palin fire the police chief of Wasilla because he wanted to close the local bars at 2 am instead of letting them stay open to 5 am, and fight alcohol abuse by cutting off the booze three hours earlier? Hell, Palin will make a good vp and prez. She's a fairly good liar, she pushes people around, she surrounds herself with bootllickers and spends taxpayer money like a Wall Street stock broker. And she all show and no substance. Yessireee, Madam President, soon to eclipse Junior as the most incompetent moron to ever steal the White House.

Why in the Heavens...

...Would the Palin Administration claim that Walt Monegan was outright insubordinate yet claim to have offered him another position in the administration?!?! This jsut isn't adding up?

Absolutely not; She is

Absolutely not; She is lying, everything she says is a lie, McCain also. The WH and Republican Party are against McCain for selling them out with Jack Abramoff. Cheney is noted to have been contacting Palin since January, telling her what to say, it's obvious to me that knowing the mention of Palin as far back as January by the WH talking points, something was in the stew back then. I believe Sarah and Todd Palin both working for Ted Stevens, negotiating contracts with OIL co., was the start of it, from there the money for her campaign run for governor and the rest is history. One of her insiders made a comment, that Sarah didn't know what she needed to do, but she was given someone to write her script, policies or whatever to prop her to the signing stage. Perhaps it's fiction, but that woman was hopping mad at her with adjective's such as incompetent, selfish, vindictive, liar...blah blah. So, usually what goes around comes around. If the ordinary person, who has a life, unlike me........knew what was out there, sourced it and double checked, I think they would vote Obama. I have supported him for two yrs now, with small increments of $25 because I'm on a fixed income. Many are doing that, millions. He is real', genuine, intelligent, honest and has incredible integrity. I'm a white woman by the way. He is what this country needs because he sees fairness as a strength, honesty as a strenth, equality as a strength. Much like Andrew Halcro, if you don't mind me saying Andrew, but, people want to at the very minimum, trust that their lawmakers are thinking of the voters not the lobbyist's or special interest. I think Alaskan people are truly going to open up this year and vote with your heart and head and pick Obama.

Palin Dangerous

Nice work; I imagine your site traffic is up a tad. Palin strikes me as an overly-ambitious, willing to do and say anything religious fanatic.... who figures the ends justify the (any) means to establish God in the White House. Scary lady/scary outlook for a Pol.

Get the word out!

Andrew - Keep on getting this information out to people. They need to know what sort of governing "skills" Palin supposedly has. This campaign is not a beauty pageant - it's a critical time in our country's history and I personally am scared silly that this woman would even be considered for ANY higher position in government, much less being a heartbeat away from the presidency!

Walt Monegan's problem

So Walt Monegan's problem was that...he was a maverick?

Well, I was hoping the two

Well, I was hoping the two words meant the same thing but not so, unfortunately. McCain's group must've used their thesaurus to make sure that rogue (villain, scalawag) was not a synonym for maverick (rebel/revolutionary). It would've been hilarious if they had described Monegan using essentially the same term that Palin is flaunting as a leadership quality. Alas, it didn't turn out quite as I hoped.

Palin has said that she

Palin has said that she welcomes this investigation and that she has nothing to hide because she did nothing wrong but this makes her look pretty guilty. She and McCain says they are going to clean up Washington of all the corruption and wasteful spending if McCain is elected and when they start cleaning up all this corruption who are they going to start with? Palin.

Motive

You folks, including Andrew, are so focused on the bloody shirt that you can't think rationally. 1. Palin didn't need a reason of any kind to fire Walt. Period. All of the emails and the back and forth don't matter, she could fire him at any time. 2. According to Walt, nobody ever asked him to fire Wooten. Nobody. 3. Todd and Sarah's admin folks asked Walt to take a fresh look at the Wooten case and Walt refused to even consider it. I have heard that Wooten followed Sarah home on at least one occasion after she was elected and that there were other incidents that caused concern. In fact, Walt himself advised Sarah to keep her distance from him - so why not look at his background again? What was Walt trying to hide, what does Wooten know that keeps him employed to this day? 4. Hollis French, who is a maxed-out Obama contributor, is running the show. Branchflower didn't even know who was on the subpoena list because French prepared it. 5. The Obama camp and DNC are almost certainly behind this entire circus. 6. Did everybody forget that "independent" Branchflower's wife used to work for Walt? 7. Didn't anyone notice that Walt never complained once about all the pressure until he got fired? Where's he working now, anyone want to bet that the Democrats will arrange a cushy job for him when the dust settles? 8. When will French file for governor? When is Branchflower going to take a job in DC?

firings

Just to help keep the facts straight, please remember: Palin doesn't fire anyone - she sends staff flunkies to do her dirty work so she does not have to look professionals in the eye when they are fired. This is executive experience.
