Palin's attack dogs and lies......

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

Like the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, Governor Sarah Palin has finally come up with yet another excuse for why she fired her former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan that she's hoping is just right.

After offering the public a handful of excuses over the last sixty days about why she suddenly fired Monegan, on Monday her attorney and McCain campaign attack dogs settled on claiming that Palin's reason was "Monegan's "rogue mentality."

Oh really, it took Palin sixty days and the help of John McCains campaign to come up with this bizarre explanation?

According to papers filed by Palin's lawyer, Monegan lost his job as public safety commissioner because he resisted Gov. Sarah Palin's budget policies and ultimately showed "outright insubordination."

According to both Palin's lawyer and a McCain campaign spokesman, it was Monegan's "rogue mentality" on budgeting and other policy issues that got him fired in July, not his alleged refusal to dismiss a state trooper who was involved in a messy divorce with the governor's sister.

Ironically, this revelation was released just days after the legislative council heard compelling testimony from special investigator Steve Branchflower that raised such serious questions about the administrations role in trying to fire Palin's former brother in law, State Trooper Mike Wooten, the legislature issue subpoenas.

However, both Palin and her new attack surrogates from the McCain camp should have spent some time vetting both her and her staffs previous statements to the press over the last two months.

On July 14, 2008 Kyle Hopkins of the Anchorage Daily News asked Palin press spokeperson Sharon Leighow about Monegan's firing:

Hopkins: "Was there a personality conflict here? You know, a rift between the governor and ..."

Leighow: "No, absolutely not. I don't know if there's more to add than what I've already told you as far as the governor wanting to change leadership in the public of safety. I don't know if we can point to one specific incident or one particular, specific detail."

In a July 21, 2008 story in the Anchorage Daily News, "The governor says she dismissed Monegan and replaced him with Kenai Police Chief Chuck Kopp last week because she wants a new direction for the department.

Palin has said she wants more of a focus on trooper recruitment and fighting drug and alcohol abuse in rural Alaska. The governor’s spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, said no more details are coming about the reasons for Monegan’s dismissal."

In a July 28 story in the Anchorage Daily News, Palin abruptly fired Monegan on July 11 and later explained she wanted to take the Department of Public Safety in a different, more energetic direction.

And yet according to McCain campaign spokesperson Megan Stapleton at today's press conference, she said that Monegan's "egregious rogue behavior" had become a major issue over the previous eight months and represented the reason for his termination?

But after two weeks and countless press interviews between July 14 and 28, neither Palin nor her staff uttered not one word of Monegan's rogue behavior.

Nor did they even mention the word rogue.

Is this really their final answer?

Then during an August 13, 2008 press conference, Palin reveals a recorded tape conversation where her close aide Frank Bailey is on tape trying to enlist the help of another State Trooper to help get Palin's ex brother in law fired.

In the recorded phone call, Bailey talks about Palin's feelings toward Monegan;  “She (Palin) really likes Walt a lot, but on this issue she feels like it’s, she doesn’t know why there’s absolutely no action for a year … it’s very troubling to her and the family. I can definitely relay that.”

So according to Bailey, the governor "really" liked Monegan's performance, but just not his performance in responding to her wishes to see Wooten out of a job. This was on February 29...and then four months later Monegan is out of a job?

Also during that August 13, 2008 press conference Palin gave more reasons why she fired Monegan.

"And now I want to talk about Walt Monegan. I appointed Monegan as commissioner of public safety because of his grasp of both urban and rural law enforcement issues. Unfortunately as my term progressed, Commissioner Monegan was not making headway on key goals, such as filling numerous trooper vacancies. Alaskans deserve a fully staffed trooper force," Palin said.

Palin's comments however were in complete contradiction to her State of the State speech just months earlier when she told Alaskans, "In Public Safety and Corrections, after years of positions left vacant, we've doubled academy recruits."

Palin then defended her firing of Monegan by saying he wasn't doing enough to combat bootlegging and alcohol problems in rural Alaska. Then she turned around and contradicted herself by saying that Monegan was offered a job where his skills could be better used; in charge of fighting bootlegging and alcohol problems in rural Alaska.

So after firing Monegan for what today is she is calling "outright insubordination" she offered him another job?

Is anybody paying attention to this?

Also during the August 13 press conference she defended her firing of Monegan by saying he was asking for lawmakers for too much money. However records from the State Legislative Finance Division, show Governor Palin proposed a $7.3 million increase to the public safety department budget but the legislature reduced the amount to $6.4 million.

According to one House Finance Committee member, when the  governor's original proposal was being cut by $900,000, she nor her staff said a word while Monegan was begging for the administration to fight for the original amount they requested due to skyrocketing fuel prices and increasing costs. He wasn't asking for more, he was simply asking for the original amount proposed by Palin.

In addition, the Associated Press reported today that the McCain campaign released a series of e-mails detailing the frustration several Palin administration officials experienced in dealing with Monegan. The "last straw," the campaign said, was a trip Monegan planned to Washington in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

First, how is the McCain campaign able to release administration emails when the administration itself refuses to release emails that have been requested by both the press and the public?

Second, Monegan stated on the KTUU News that the trip was authorized and supported by Governor Palin which seems to make sense because Alaska leads the nation in sexual assault.

But even if one was to believe Palin's story, the fact that she'd offer someone who she accuses of having a "rogue mentality" and was  guilty of "outright insubordination" another job in her administration, raises serious questions about her ability to run government.

And by the way, where have I heard that term rogue cop before?

Oh yeah; in the Anchorage Daily News on September 4, 2008: "Palin says she never pressured anybody, doesn't know that anyone on her staff did, and wasn't aware of what Todd was up to. She has called Wooten a dangerous "rogue trooper."

The only thing rogue around here is Palin's imagination and the McCain camps attempt to mislead Alaskans.

Re:Motive

Sorry, Jim, I don't see how these events of the the conflicting responses have anything to do with Obama and the DNC as the firing and Palin's reasons for the firing proceed her selection as McCain's VP choice. This is a hole that Palin dug for herself. And that her first position was that she would welcome and cooperate with any investigation to her current position that neither she nor any state employees would respond to any subpoena leads one to suspect that there is an issue there that she doesn't want to be aired before the national election. While this situation may have been settled much quieter if it had stayed an Alaskan investigation, since being thrust onto the national scene, it has greater import.

palin refusal

knowing now that they brought someone in from NY city, and the media are being very careful about this. Truthfully, I think if this wasn't commented on and action, something criminal might be missed. Rove is steering this ship with Cheney, they wouldn't take this last action if it was a small matter. Something else is brewing. Alaskan women are angry with her, knowone trusts this woman or her husband. Many other states are voicing their discontent with the Palin pick, Republican women, and as usual, I think it all goes back to corruption and oil. Just a feeling. John McCain was put in a bad position a week before the announcement when even Joe Leiberman thought he had the go-ahead from the Repub Party.....I think, as I heard, John McCain was losing fast...and they bribed him to do this. Mind you, he's loving it, but he did want his buddy Joe on the ticket. Rove and Cheney are in this choice. I also think Alaskan Republicans are to some degree, but definitely Stephen Harper P.M. Canada is in on it.

Motive

JimAK, what are you smokin' dude? This has nothing to do about Monegan's firing, it's about abuse of power. Also, Wooten was investigated by the troopers and, despite the recommendation of the investigating officer, Lt. Grimes changed the report--a first in AK Trooper history, and Wooten was disciplined. Alaska Personnel rules and union agreements do not allow the opening up of a personnel issue that has already been investigated and settled. Period. Monegan could not have opened up Wooten's case again without creating a liability for the State in the form of a lawsuit by both Wooten and PSEA. Of course no complaints were filed against the governor by one of her cabinet members about pressuring on this issue. Are you nuts? What employee would do that to their employer if they wanted to keep their job?? I think you're seeing what you want to see, stick to the facts please.

"The Obama camp are almost

"The Obama camp are almost certainly behind this circus." How did Obama accomplish this back in July, 2 months before even Palin and McCain knew she would be running against Biden?

your remarks

It boggles the mind that people assume that Palin has the powers of a king and can do whatever she wants. You are full of crap about Obama being behind this. Its easy to say it. Back it up. Lay some truth on the table. You can't. Its easier to spew crap than to lay out truth. You have nothing to back up that claim. But then, reality is difficult for a republican. Good luck.

Mind your manners

"But then, reality is difficult for a republican."

Mind your manners, Catherine. Many of the posters on this blog, including our esteemed host, Andrew Halcro, are registered Republicans. And many of the rest of us are independents who just vote that way.

Please don't misconstrue our desire to see the truth come out and justice be done — albeit to one of our own party — as political or philosophical leanings to the left.

Unbelieveable!!!!

Andrew, Thank you for this comprehensive look at the Troopergate debacle! I appreciate being able to read all the comments as well. We in the lower 48 kind of figured this was a hornet's nest...and your article provides some valuable insight into the situation. It has merely reinforced my opinion that Palin is not just not fit to be VP, I would not want her as MY governor-that's for sure!

We Don't Want Her Either

We don't want her as our governor; that's why we're hoping to pass her off to you folks in the Lower 48. :-)

help a guy out, what version

help a guy out, what version of firing Monegan is this? I've lost track.

Version 3.0

This is version 3.0 of Troopergate. Version 1.0 was when the Guv gave the "new direction, new energy" routine. Version 2.0 was when the Guv gave the three reasons why she fired him.

Rough and Tough

Wow....I saw the response from Meg Stapleton (a supposed media professional) on the tube yesterday. Meg came off as peturbed school teacher lecturing her class about the latest opaque and closed Palin debacle. I guess Sarah has promised all the local media types some sweet jobs in DC because they are certainly veering from the neutral side of the facts. Meg's patronizing tone, combined with skillful sneering, is supposed to scare us into a blob of mindless goo, thus following the poliical mindsetof the Palinistas. The spin is getting so strong I may have to put a counter-balancing gyro on my Barcalounger just to watch the responses from her ever so dedicated handlers........OMG, revisionist history in the making.

I agree, seems to me that

I agree, seems to me that when she demands loyalty above honesty, Sarah Palin picks more pit-bulls.

Monegan under the bus

Let's see. According to Meg "I used to be a journalist" Stapleton, Kim Elton can't be trusted because he donated to the Obama campaign. On the other hand, we should trust Meg when she "personally assures" us that her boss/meal ticket really is open, transparent and ethical. Then there's Meg standing behind a McCain/Palin podium as she indignantly announces that those horrible Democrats are (gasp!) injecting politics into the situation. However, my favorite is when Randy Ruaro, the governor's deputy chief of staff, is quoted in ADN as complaining that Commissioner Monegan is "off the reservation". Basically, this is mean-spirited sleaze and vintage Barracuda. If I was John McCain, I'd have someone check the brakes on my car every morning.

What a joke....

How many times can the story change? Meg gave a good performance, that's all it was. Too bad that she didn't have any actual facts on her side. She should know better. It's embarrassing that she used words like "obstructionist" to describe Monegan and "reform budget" to describe Palin's budget. What???? A reform budget? That must mean big increase, because that's all Sarah Palin's budget did. And since when do cabinet members have to get permission from the Governor to travel?

Downfall of Alaska

I join others in the outcry regarding the lies being told from "our" state government. This is absurd. What childish behavior we are seeing from our leaders. Palin is over the top and has resorted to the most outrageous behavior. Meg Stapelton - she has gone down to a level unimagineable - right there with Palin. These are the facts guys, not spin, not opinion. How DARE they do this to us. I take comfort in knowing that when Palin loses - she will not be welcomed here.

Nice article. Well

Nice article. Well researched. You need a Digg link to get more eyeballs for your efforts. I'd have dugg you if you had one...

What was really going on here?

Here is one theory: this may not have started out as blundering, but it certainly has ended up that way. The Palin clan wanted Chief Monegan to do their dirty work, carry out the vendetta against Wooten, and then go to the sacrificial altar. Monegan was expendable from the get go and hardly anyone would have taken notice. But, the best-laid plans of mice and men (and women) often go awry, and this one just keeps on twitching. They tried bringing on a second hit man, but his "girl trouble" went public too soon and he couldn't make the trip. See, if Kopp had been able to get the job done, they could have said, "whoa, this guy is apparently a sexual predator, we had no idea; he'll have to go." Then, just as the third string was coming on board, this whole VP thing landed in the middle of what up until that point would have been just another B-movie script. Now it is becoming a Cohen Brothers blockbuster waiting to be written. Get the popcorn, the next scene is about to start.

I never thought I'd be

I never thought I'd be embarrassed to say I am an Alaskan. That day has arrived.

I do not live in Alaska but

I do not live in Alaska but I am embarrassed to say that I am an American. What in God's name happened to my country.

The nation has a right to know the truth

before election day. We demand that Palin cooperate with the investigation so it can be concluded on time. Furthermore, the AP and at least ABC News should receive this article.

Scared to death...

Ever since Palin was named VP nominee I have thought there is something wrong with this picture. Then I found this blog and now I am scared to death McCain/Palin might actually win. People love her and will forgive her anything. If they are elected it sounds like McCain had better watch his back, this woman will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Drill Baby Drill

You know if I hear Palin quoting people in the lower 48 as saying "Drill Baby Drill" one more time I am going to gag myself to death. I have yet to read about anyone else mentioning that phrase which has to be the dumbest sounding thing I heard yet in this whole campaign.

Sarah and Megan "The Liars"

This may very well blow up in their faces. Monagan no doubt will be able to prove the trip was authorized. So far every thing he has said has turned out to be true. If she is so innocent then why is she so afraid. I am telling you - we deserve the truth and she deserves what she gets. Wake up Megan - when you make her mad you will find yourself in the same position as Monagan and since you have humiliated yourself in public there will be nobody around to help you. Don't know about the rest of you but I am more determined than ever to see Ms Palin and her Bullies brought to justice. McCain you have lost my VOTE!! PS - Thank you Walt for trying to get help fight crime in this State. Evidently the Governor & her Goons have no interest in making this a safer place unless of course there is something in it for them personally.

More pit bulls on the loose

Meg Stapleton was laughable yesterday. Her angry little tirade on Channel 2 news was a total farce. It was almost as believable as Bill Clinton's "I did not have sex with that woman" speech. This attack the victim ploy will ultimately make them look like fools. They don't care as long as the GOP spin machine can put their team in at all costs. I bet that all of the supoenas get ignored.

mccain sure does need to *change* washington

and he can start by cleaning out the corruption and good 'ol boy politics in what can potentially be the office of the vice president. I sure do hope that the real details behind troopergate see the light of day and soon. I mean, the very fact that the governor's office encouraged the use of personal email accounts to conduct state business smells of something fishy.

Poor Porky

It is clearly the pig who should be self-righteously indignant about Obama's "lipstick-on-a-pig" remark. The pig doesn't lie, isn't a socialist and doesn't charge a per-diem rate for staying in his own pen. To compare the pig to Palin is an outrage; Obama owes Porky an immediate apology.

This conflicts with Palin's prior excuses

From the CNBC interview ('What does a VP do?' video), Palin said Monegan was fired because Palin wanted "new direction" regarding "bootlegging and alcohol abuse problems in our rural villages.." NOTHING about insubordination. This smells very bad. Watch it yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oro2Yh9HoEM&feature=related Palin: "And it's cool. I want them to ask me the questions. I don’t have anything to hide. And um, didn't do anything wrong there. And it is a Governor's prerogative -- a right -- to fill that cabinet with members whom she or he feels will do best for the people whom we are serving. So I look forward to any kind of investigation or questions being asked, 'cause, got nothing to hide." [Why did you fire him]: Palin: "I never tried to fire a former brother-in-law who's been divorced from my sister for quite some time. No, it was the Commissioner that we were seeking more results, more action to fill, uh, vacant trooper positions, to deal with bootlegging and alcohol abuse problems in our rural villages especially. Um, just needed some new direction, a lot of new energy in that position. That is why the replacement took place there of the Commissioner of public safety. It had nothing to do with an estranged brother-in-law -- a divorce that had happened some years ago." "It shouldn't disqualify me from anything, including progressing the state's agenda here towards more energy production so we can contribute more to the US. Nor should it, uh, dissuade any kind of agenda progress in any arena because again, I haven’t done anything wrong, and, and, through an investigation of our lawmakers who are kinda, uh, lookin at me as a target, we invite those questions so that we can truthfully answer the questions. But as to the VP talk all the time, I tell ya, I still can’t answer that question until someone answers, for me, what is it exactly that the VP does, every day? . . ."

How very sad

Not only is our Governor going past the ridiculous with her continual search for the most acceptable answer, but she has also past the lowest of lows. Is the Monegan family (yes, there are more folks than just Walt that are affected with all the accusations) of no consequence and dispensible as long as Sarah remains firm in her mission?

Respect

How incredibly sad it is indeed. Walt is a honorable person who has dedicated his life to law enforcement. If you have never worked as a peace officer or been a close family member of an officer you would have a hard time understanding the challenges they face and the sacrifices made by them. They are not perfect but they are a select few. Most people would not be able to pass the background checks and mental evaluations required before you are even allowed to attend a police academy. There is a high failure rate at the academies. This is mostly due to the recruit getting an eye opener as to what the positions actually require. When I meet a retired officer I thank him for his service just the same as I would a member of our military. Police are not above reproach and they have their problem people just like everyone else. The difference is it is much more rare to find a bad one because of the initial selection and training process. The problem people rarely escape notice once on the job because of the daily scrutiny by their supervisors and the public. Thirty five years of service in a job that will only hire a select few, in positions held by a small percentage of that few, my hat is off to you. Stand fast, I believe there are many who support you.

That is exactly the point...

With Governor Palin, everyone is expendable (that which is regarded as not worth preserving or saving; able to be sacrificed) when it comes to her ambition.
