Palin's attack dogs and lies......

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

Like the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, Governor Sarah Palin has finally come up with yet another excuse for why she fired her former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan that she's hoping is just right.

After offering the public a handful of excuses over the last sixty days about why she suddenly fired Monegan, on Monday her attorney and McCain campaign attack dogs settled on claiming that Palin's reason was "Monegan's "rogue mentality."

Oh really, it took Palin sixty days and the help of John McCains campaign to come up with this bizarre explanation?

According to papers filed by Palin's lawyer, Monegan lost his job as public safety commissioner because he resisted Gov. Sarah Palin's budget policies and ultimately showed "outright insubordination."

According to both Palin's lawyer and a McCain campaign spokesman, it was Monegan's "rogue mentality" on budgeting and other policy issues that got him fired in July, not his alleged refusal to dismiss a state trooper who was involved in a messy divorce with the governor's sister.

Ironically, this revelation was released just days after the legislative council heard compelling testimony from special investigator Steve Branchflower that raised such serious questions about the administrations role in trying to fire Palin's former brother in law, State Trooper Mike Wooten, the legislature issue subpoenas.

However, both Palin and her new attack surrogates from the McCain camp should have spent some time vetting both her and her staffs previous statements to the press over the last two months.

On July 14, 2008 Kyle Hopkins of the Anchorage Daily News asked Palin press spokeperson Sharon Leighow about Monegan's firing:

Hopkins: "Was there a personality conflict here? You know, a rift between the governor and ..."

Leighow: "No, absolutely not. I don't know if there's more to add than what I've already told you as far as the governor wanting to change leadership in the public of safety. I don't know if we can point to one specific incident or one particular, specific detail."

In a July 21, 2008 story in the Anchorage Daily News, "The governor says she dismissed Monegan and replaced him with Kenai Police Chief Chuck Kopp last week because she wants a new direction for the department.

Palin has said she wants more of a focus on trooper recruitment and fighting drug and alcohol abuse in rural Alaska. The governor’s spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, said no more details are coming about the reasons for Monegan’s dismissal."

In a July 28 story in the Anchorage Daily News, Palin abruptly fired Monegan on July 11 and later explained she wanted to take the Department of Public Safety in a different, more energetic direction.

And yet according to McCain campaign spokesperson Megan Stapleton at today's press conference, she said that Monegan's "egregious rogue behavior" had become a major issue over the previous eight months and represented the reason for his termination?

But after two weeks and countless press interviews between July 14 and 28, neither Palin nor her staff uttered not one word of Monegan's rogue behavior.

Nor did they even mention the word rogue.

Is this really their final answer?

Then during an August 13, 2008 press conference, Palin reveals a recorded tape conversation where her close aide Frank Bailey is on tape trying to enlist the help of another State Trooper to help get Palin's ex brother in law fired.

In the recorded phone call, Bailey talks about Palin's feelings toward Monegan;  “She (Palin) really likes Walt a lot, but on this issue she feels like it’s, she doesn’t know why there’s absolutely no action for a year … it’s very troubling to her and the family. I can definitely relay that.”

So according to Bailey, the governor "really" liked Monegan's performance, but just not his performance in responding to her wishes to see Wooten out of a job. This was on February 29...and then four months later Monegan is out of a job?

Also during that August 13, 2008 press conference Palin gave more reasons why she fired Monegan.

"And now I want to talk about Walt Monegan. I appointed Monegan as commissioner of public safety because of his grasp of both urban and rural law enforcement issues. Unfortunately as my term progressed, Commissioner Monegan was not making headway on key goals, such as filling numerous trooper vacancies. Alaskans deserve a fully staffed trooper force," Palin said.

Palin's comments however were in complete contradiction to her State of the State speech just months earlier when she told Alaskans, "In Public Safety and Corrections, after years of positions left vacant, we've doubled academy recruits."

Palin then defended her firing of Monegan by saying he wasn't doing enough to combat bootlegging and alcohol problems in rural Alaska. Then she turned around and contradicted herself by saying that Monegan was offered a job where his skills could be better used; in charge of fighting bootlegging and alcohol problems in rural Alaska.

So after firing Monegan for what today is she is calling "outright insubordination" she offered him another job?

Is anybody paying attention to this?

Also during the August 13 press conference she defended her firing of Monegan by saying he was asking for lawmakers for too much money. However records from the State Legislative Finance Division, show Governor Palin proposed a $7.3 million increase to the public safety department budget but the legislature reduced the amount to $6.4 million.

According to one House Finance Committee member, when the  governor's original proposal was being cut by $900,000, she nor her staff said a word while Monegan was begging for the administration to fight for the original amount they requested due to skyrocketing fuel prices and increasing costs. He wasn't asking for more, he was simply asking for the original amount proposed by Palin.

In addition, the Associated Press reported today that the McCain campaign released a series of e-mails detailing the frustration several Palin administration officials experienced in dealing with Monegan. The "last straw," the campaign said, was a trip Monegan planned to Washington in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

First, how is the McCain campaign able to release administration emails when the administration itself refuses to release emails that have been requested by both the press and the public?

Second, Monegan stated on the KTUU News that the trip was authorized and supported by Governor Palin which seems to make sense because Alaska leads the nation in sexual assault.

But even if one was to believe Palin's story, the fact that she'd offer someone who she accuses of having a "rogue mentality" and was  guilty of "outright insubordination" another job in her administration, raises serious questions about her ability to run government.

And by the way, where have I heard that term rogue cop before?

Oh yeah; in the Anchorage Daily News on September 4, 2008: "Palin says she never pressured anybody, doesn't know that anyone on her staff did, and wasn't aware of what Todd was up to. She has called Wooten a dangerous "rogue trooper."

The only thing rogue around here is Palin's imagination and the McCain camps attempt to mislead Alaskans.

"Rogue"

You have done a great job, with facts, which does not look like the McCain Campaign wants to deal with. Gov. Palin seems to give us all some of the problems that Bush has. So, what next? another fight to get the real truth, and accountability from another elected official? And does Sen. Ted Stevens play a part in this? Thank you for your articles. We are all curious as to what McCain's handlers will do next?

shame on Meg Stapleton

for lowering herself to a position where she becomes the attack dog for Palin in a ruthless attempt to discredit Monegan for her own gain.

Troopergate Palin Scandal Beneath Alaskans

Yes, Andrew, Americans are paying attention to this! A reasonable question to ak is if Alaskans are paying attention and acting on this? Are they contacting their local legislators and weighing in? Are they demanding the clearing of this issue once and for all so Alaska can resume its respectful goal of limiting fraud in the executive office? Are they searching for restitutive legal action towards the Governor for a very apparent coverup playing out on their State's watch? We here in the lower 48 have always admired Alaska, hence it's thriving tourist industry and support. But a Governor who kills Troopergate transparency and goes back on her word to participate in this investigation, is like a gun-carrying wolf in sheep clothing. It is viewed as evil, as a sham, as dishonest. Alaskan's are not sheep. Let them step up to the plate and demand answers. We in the lower 48 will join them!

Unconscionable, Inexcusable Defamation of Character

This is absolutely revolting behavior and not even close to acceptable from a Governor-would-be-VP nor from her attorney. I truly hope that Van Klein is really ready to risk his bar license for the McCain camp and that he's being WELL compensated because this is flagrant ethics violations BY THE ATTORNEY TOO - and the bar is going to receive a complaint on this one. This is just too far - particularly given that what he submitted directly contradicts WHAT PALIN HERSELF SAID! First he was fired because "he wasn't a team player" Then "going in a new direction - oh - but he still can be of good public service so we offered him a promotion in another department - but he turned it down" Now - "rouge cop"! This man is widely said to be a straight-shooter, well-liked and most of all HONORABLE - how dare she sink this low! This is infuriating and just outright wrong and something has to be done. Perhaps once upon a time this woman had morals and ethics, but those have obviously been lost along the way.

WOW, this Monegan guy sounds

WOW, this Monegan guy sounds like a real loose cannon, a "Maverick" if you will. I'm glad Sarah's fighting to keep that element out of government! Oh wait... mav·er·ick (mvr-k, mvrk) n. 1. An unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, traditionally considered the property of the first person who brands it. 2. One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter.

new word

Another new word: (The) Messarah(ma-sar'-uh) n. A person rising from the darkness of wilderness to bring truth, open and transparent government to the people, and salvation to the free world.

Well, you played the gentleman

Andrew - how you can act the gentleman after Meg looping you into her ridiculous statements today is just beyond me. But a lot of things are beyond me these days: how the McCain Machine has swooped down into my State and hijacked people I used to have respect for, incl. Mr. Parnell, Mr. Coghill, Ms. McGuire, and Ms. Stapleton, to name a few. I guess people figure there's a whole lot of nations that will need new ambassadors in a couple months so say what the hacks tell you to say and hope for assignment to a sunnier locale come January. Pathetic.

I was sickened to hear Meg Stapleton tonight...

This is just outrageous to see this happening to a decent, honest man. Just another innocent victim of Palin. How many more until we all protest? How about the organizers of last Saturday's rally getting a new bunch together in support of Walt Monegan! He does not deserve this just in order for the Princess to climb her glass ladder. this is "classic Palin " behavior. Keep lying until something works. Sarah--you have a problem in case no one in your inner circle has told you.... America needs to be worned of her behaviors and vindictiveness!!!!!

Re: Meg Stapleton

You can always go to youtube and watch her get trounced by a caribou. It made me feel better. She's really turned into quite the shill. Yesterday's conference showed some serious faux rage.

Call Sean Parnell- Tell him we need another press release

Tell him it wasn't the democrats who hijacked the investigation- it was the McCain campaign whose operatives are hell bent on maing a political spectacle out of it. Do they really think that the 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling are going to support someone who: 1. now says she fired Monegan for trying to get federal funding for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases. 2. who as Wasilla mayor eliminated funding for forensic exams for victims of sexual assault. 3. who simply cannot tell the truth when confronted by a lie.

I hope some women's groups

I hope some women's groups get the info regarding the federal funding that Monegan wanted to get for sex assault cases (gee, someone who actually wanted to deal with the problem) as well as the claim that Palin made rape victims pay for their own rape kits. Outrageous - is there any proof regarding the rape kits? I would think NOW and other women's groups would love to hear about that!

Sarah "Fellow Americans lend me your ear-marks" Palin

Sarah Palin should have taken a minor in history instead of trying to learn how to sound good in front of the cameras...history is re-peating itself...her past is her future. Any of this sound familiar? Nixon: Denies any wrong doing by his staff or himself related to watergate and starts an investigation into what happened. Palin: Denies any wrong doing by her staff or herself related to troopergate. Palin said she welcomes the investigation: "Hold me accountable." Nixon: Alexander Butterfield, former presidential appointments secretary, reveals in congressional testimony that since 1971 Nixon had recorded all conversations and telephone calls in his offices. Palin: Palin announced the recent discovery of a taped conversation between Bailey, her director of boards and commissions, who called a Department of Public Safety official. In the conversation, Bailey pressures for the firing of Trooper Mike Wooten. Nixon: John Dean has told Watergate investigators that he discussed the Watergate cover-up with President Nixon at least 35 times. Palin: Admits her staff made at least 26 calls and untold e-mails to the Department of Public Safety regarding Wooten. Nixon: The Senate Watergate committee begins its hearings. Attorney General-designate Elliot Richardson taps former solicitor general Archibald Cox as the Justice Department's special prosecutor for Watergate. Palin: Steve Branchflower, a retired prosecutor, was named Friday as special counsel to the Legislature to investigate Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Note: A Republican legislative panel voted 12-0 (8 republicans and 4 democrats) has launched a $100,000 investigation to determine if Palin dismissed Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire the trooper, Mike Wooten. Wooten went through a messy divorce from Palin's sister. Nixon: Watergate prosecutors find a memo addressed to John Ehrlichman describing in detail the plans to burglarize the office of Pentagon Papers defendant Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist. Palin: "This is not a 'he said she said' situation. Others were contacted by Todd and Sarah as well," states Monegan, he also turns over adequate documentation to corroborate his testimony that Palin pressured him directly and via staff members to fire Wooten. Nixon: Orders the White House taping system disconnected. Refuses to turn over the presidential tape recordings to the Senate Watergate committee or the special prosecutor Palin: Claimed executive privilege to keep e-mails and phone calls secret -- despite the fact many of them were sent or made by her husband Todd Palin, who is not an elected official. What's more, Palin and her staff intentionally use her personal Yahoo e-mail accountsand cell phones, to avoid freedom of information act release requests. Nixon: Declares, "I'm not a crook," maintaining his innocence in the Watergate case. Palin: Hired Anchorage attorney Thomas V. Van Flein to represent her in her capacity as governor, Sarah Palin denies all allegations, and with her grit and maverick like personality she welcomed the investigation. Nixon: Becomes the first U.S. president to resign. Palin: We all know how this story ends...

lobbying for money to prosecute sexual assault

I'm baffled that the McCain campaign would even put out that statement that the "'last straw' was a trip Monegan planned to Washington in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases." I mean seriously?? You're going to fire him because he was trying to get money to bring people to justice?? SERIOUSLY? Does McCain/Palin really want to say that the Government shouldn't help fund police to investigate rape cases? What were they thinking? That makes Palin look like she's pro-rape. It's just a ridiculous line of reasoning, and I think it shows the campaign is grasping for anything at this point to save them from it.

Thank You!

This is what I have been saying for months! I have asked the question numerous times when my friends approach me about my negative view of Palin - "Why did she offer him a job with ABC if she did not like his efforts on bootlegging and alcoholism?" Hello! You don't offer someone a job where you say they cannot do the job well. These points are so obvious that it just amuses me that she doesn't just throw up her arms and say "Oh, I can't take this anymore, I did it because I wanted him to fire Mike." But no, the snowball is getting bigger and bigger. Reminds me of when a child creates enormous lies to cover up more lies. Sarah - here's your chair - go sit in the corner like a good little girl.

I don't live in Alaska. I am

I don't live in Alaska. I am struck by how many "open secrets" there seem to be in Alaska about Gov. Palin and her family. Americans deserve to know who they will be deciding for or against in November; they deserve to know what Alaska knows. Please post what you know to be true on blogs that all of America reads, like DailyKos and Huffington Post. We aren't getting enough truth from the press.

Getting the word out

I saw a piece written by Les Gara on the Huffington Post today spelling out the progressive illusiveness of our governor with regard to this investigation. Seems to me it would have been easier and cheaper for her to cooperate as she said she would. I wonder, where is the transparency she so vehemently espoused?

Nasty Tone is Palin Staff Style

Listening to Meg Stapleton spew out Palin's latest attack on a former associate was awful. Stapleton's scripted pauses and nasty smirks were right out of Sara's play book. Her inflection and phony indignation were right out of a 6th grade play. Her painful reference to Sara being OPEN and TRANSPARENT were comical. Anyone paying attention is seeing a very clear pattern of this administrations style of vilification of folks who they once supported. It appears all it takes is a minor error that Sara percieves as step out of line and things get really ugly really quick. Wasn't Meg Stapleton another one of the migrants from KTUU to the Palin gang ? From a stuggling reporter to a high paid state employee - thats the way to build loyalty.

Don't you get it?

Sarah always plays the BLAME GAME. She will blame every thing on her attorneys and McCain's people if things go real bad. She blamed the legislature for the highest tax on the oil industry and for the ridiculous hand out of 500million to a Canadian company with absolutely no guarantee of a pipeline. She will blame her former acting chief of staff and Meg Stapleton for every thing because she was not even there or "did not authorize". A short tour back on the web and you will discover that she covers up her lies, distortions, and half truths with blame on others. After all, the Queen can do no wrong. But, what a child.

Meg appeared to be posessed

I also was shocked to turn on the KTUU news right when Meg Stapleton was performing that angry statement about Monegan --- she seemed like another person, almost like one of those demon-posessed little girls in the horror movies, shouting in the demon's voice --- you could almost see her eyes glowing red... Great acting debut, Megan!

Meg Stapleton has ...

... sold her soul.

A Riddle

How do you know if Sarah Palin is lying? She's talking!

Here's a joke we tell up

Here's a joke we tell up here in Alaska.... How do you know Sarah Palin is lying? Her lipstick is moving.

"Moose in the Headlights"

Behold the "PALIN-MOOSE" "Palin-Moose" (n) noun; A person with NO clue of foreign policy trying to wing it and getting caught staring into the headlights... ...Now on a viscous attack with lies and deceit...who "cliff-noted" and rehearsed segments of expected questions from Chalie Gibson... "Incredible slime" ... the only level left is "Diarehha"... and heading to the Store for a Family Sized package of "Charmin" ...

OMG!

Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to our state.

What now?

I could not believe my EARS when I heard the news driving home from work tonight. I am ashamed for Alaska and I am extremely saddened that a good and honorable man like Walt Monegan has had to suffer such humiliation. I don't think I can bring myself to vote for McCain, knowing that Palin will really stop at nothing to get what she wants. After this update, now I AM frightened about the possibility of Palin being a "heartbeat away" from the Presidency.

Quote from the ADN: EVEN IF???

As Elroy Jetsons dog Astro once said... "RUH ROH" Quote: "The papers (the governor's lawyer filed today) add that even if Palin had asked the public safety commissioner to fire a state trooper "based on documented acts of violence and other improper conduct," that wouldn't violate the state Ethics Act "because the public generally shares a common interest in public order and safety." EVEN IF??? Read that again... EVEN IF??? Wow, how's that for admissions that Sarah was lying the whole time. Now we are getting excuses as to why Sarah was "justified" in trying to get Monegan to fire Wooten. Now we can understand the constant smear tactics by Sarah's goons (i.e. Eddie Burke) towards Wooten. Unfortunately, all of the Palins' complaints were filed years after they were alleged by the Palins to have actually occurred. Which coincidentally were the same time as the child custody hearings. They were NOT reported when they were supposed to have actually happened while Sis was happily married. No wonder the judge saw through the Palin/Heath's smear campaign towards Officer Wooten. Is a rogue mentality anything like being a Maverick??? Inquiring minds want to know.

Am I Dreaming?

I keep thinking I'll wake up and all of this will be just a dream. Palin and the zombie rats can't expect us all to believe this. She is such a liar! McCain and Palin are a fricking joke. I will NOT vote republican this year. No WAY. How can Walt have been such a problem yet she wanted to move him to another position? WTF? I worked with Walt from a distance (when I promoted public safety programs) and he is an excellent individual with the best reputation. He won't stoop to that loser's level. I support you Walt! Walt for Governor!!!

You've been had.

You've been had. Gubernatorial candidate Hollis French, fueled by support from the DNC, have been trying any possible way they can to tear down Palin and, to paraphrase Gertrude Stein, 'There ain't no there there.' The connections between Branchflower, French, Monegan and the Democrat party are clearly obvious and everyone can see that the whole thing has been orchestrated from Day One to provide the proverbial October surprise, regardless of the substance behind the allegations. Here's a bit of advice: When you hit bottom, stop digging.

JimAK's big mistake

JimAK ... what you fail to see, or to acknowlege, is that more Republicans than Democrats in the state legislature voted to investigate Palin Not one of them on the committee dissented. There is a whole bunch of digging left to do, and the Democrats aren't holding all the shovels.

Really?

Gee, JimAK, what are you going to buy with your McCain Bucks?
