Troopergate Report: Palin abused her power

NEW! Subscribe to RSS Feed

A legislative investigation has concluded that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power in pushing for the firing of an Alaska state trooper who was once married to her sister, or by failing to prevent her husband Todd from doing so.

The report by investigator independent investigator Steve Branchflower was made public late this afternoon by a bipartisan 12-0 vote of the Legislative Council, which authorized the investigation back in July.

Branchflower, in a report to the Legislative Council, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.

How it all started

On the morning of July 17, we broke the story about the connection of Department of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan's firing and the relentless personal vendetta that Governor Sarah Palin and her husband were waging against their former brother in law and Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten.

In the blog posting, we asserted that Monegan was fired for not only disagreeing with the governor over budget cuts she wanted to make to an already strapped State Trooper force, but because Monegan consistently refused to cave into pressure to fire Palin's former brother in law.

Wooten had been in a nasty custody battle with Palin's sister, Molly McCann, and the obsession with trying to get Wooten fired was so that he'd lose his job and be unable to pay child support and this would have to give up the couples children.

Almost three months to the day later, the Alaska Legislature voted unanimously to release a special investigators report that found Governor Palin unlawfully abused her power by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper

The 253 page report with 1,000 pages of back up material will be our weekend homework. Check back later this weekend for more in depth reporting on the findings.

Meanwhile, we link the blog that broke the story last July as well as a follow up blog, questioning the power Todd Palin was allowed to wield in the governor's office.

Palin glowing recommendation

http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site163/2008/0721/20080721_111415_PalinLetterofRecomend.pdf Is this letter from Sarah Palin, recommending Wooten be hired, real? If so please show this.

Recommendation Letter

Yes, that is the copy of Sarah Palin's recommendation of Michael Wooten for a State Trooper job. It is on her Mayor of Wasilla letterhead and is dated Jan. 1, 2000. Wooten went from being Albert Schweitzer to Attila the Hun in four short years. I guess when you are "in" with the Palin's you are good as gold but when you fall out of step with them...then you really had better watch your back. Not to mention what this letter indicates about Sarah's judgment in general.

Sarah at the Flyers game last night.

Last night Channel 2 news showed Sarah walking out to drop the ceremonial puck at the Flyers-Ranger hockey game. It seemed like strange footage. There was no sound, and no actual video of the drop. I went to YouTube and found out why. Most of the crowd was booing. They turned up the arena music to attempt to drown out the boos. The star is tarnished.

Not trying to "promote" here, but I have 4 videos of the event..

...for those naysayers who don't believe it really happened.

Also, they are for those who watch shows like Channel 2 or accounts from AP where they wipe the sound out of the video. The first two were filmed up in the nosebleed sections, away from the speakers, so it's scary how well you can hear the booing.

Palin is "vindicated"

I just read the Oct 12 ADN story in which she claims she was vindicated. HUH? What report was Palin reading? Musta been the one the McCain campaign issued 'cause it sure wasn't the official one released by the legislative council. She must really think we're stupid. This is the final straw for me. I watched the KTUU news Saturday night and they played the interview she granted to local media. The RULES were set before the session began: Each reporter was limited to ONE question. The line went dead after the agreed upon 5 minutes time. And this was to ALASKA reporters. Guess we know where we stand on her priority list. At this point, I'm not sure what would be worse: Palin as VP or Palin coming back to Alaska.

Is Sarah Palin Mentally ill?

http://community.adn.com/adn/node/132625?pageNum=2&mi_pluck_action=page_nav#Comments_Container Just finished listening to her responses to the Branchflower report... The classic signs of mental issues begin with perception: --Something is very wrong if Palin sincerely believes she did nothing wrong. ... and this person wants to gain access to the nuclear codes? Spock would say..."Facinating..."

I voted for you for governor

I voted for you for governor but alas, your mission was more important. Impeach Palin for the HYPOCRITE she is!!! PS Go RedSox!!!!

Troopergate - Budget Cuts

"In the blog posting, we asserted that Monegan was fired for not only disagreeing with the governor over budget cuts she wanted to make to an already strapped State Trooper force, but because Monegan consistently refused to cave into pressure to fire Palin's former brother in law..." Is it possible that the budget cuts Gov Palin wanted to implement were just another way to pressure Mr. Monegan to fire State Trooper Wooten?

Time sums up the amateur Palin administration

Time has recently summed up our sophomoric Palin administration very well. http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,1849399,00.html

Time sums up the Palin administration

From the time.com article : "the amateurism and cronyism of her brief administration hardly leaves Palin sitting pretty". Add this to the fact that she hired an administrator to do the "executive" part of the job when she was mayor of Wasilla, what exactly is her so-called executive experience that qualifies her for the job of Vice President? Why isn't the Obama Campaign making big about all of this? To Mr. Halcro - what will the repercussions of all of this be? Will anyone file for recall or impeachment of Gov. Palin before Nov. 4th? Will Monegan sue her for harassment between now and Nov. 4th? What will damage this Teflon Queen and the McCain/Palin ticket?

In a word..

In a word........alone. Lost in all the furor is the fact that Sarah Palin has been tried and convicted by one man, Stephan Branchflower. No other authority has gone on the official record. Not yet.

She has been neither tried,

She has been neither tried, nor convicted. Not yet. Branchflower's report was an investigative report. The legislative branch now needs to decide if any criminal referral is required before she could "tried" or "convicted." It does not appear they are too keen to do that, so your girl is probably pretty safe from having to experience any of the consequences of her petty and childish behavior. I know you are a Palin apologist, but just the utter lack of professionalism in her administration should concern anyone who is subject to it or who truly believes she is fit for national office.

not that I will change your mind JimAK

but I took the time to read through the entire report closely and some things really stick out like a sore thumb... * Sarah may have been elected but Todd has been the acting governor * They actually fired Walt because Wooten's picture was used on the poster promoting the AST * The amount of time and energy spent by top department management managers chasing around the personal acts of vindictiveness is absolutely astounding. I mean no one was immune, from the governors chief of staff, to the governors scheduler, the chairman of boards and commissions, many people in the AST and let's not forget the attorney general. * If Alaska actually considers themselves to be other than ignorant hayseeds, you surely would never know it when you get an inside glimpse at what drives their government. This is a pathetic story of pathetic people using the machinations of the highest level of government to settle personal scores. Impeachment is the only remedy

Just like cheerleader tryouts

Jim, Your hero just conducted herself like she always has, a spoiled cheerleader. It's going to be bummer when her ticket loses the election and she comes home. I wonder if she'll continue to scam per diem to stay in her own house. I guess that's no bigger scam than collecting a state paycheck to campaign.

One guy????? That's funny...

That's funny, we in the lower 48 heard there was a bipartisan legislature involved.

Read

You need to read. The Legislative Council didn't vote to endorse or approve the report. They voted to release it.

Pay no attention to Jim

Don't pay heed to Jim. He's mentally ill and waiting for his meds. The legislative council was primarily republicans. The former prosecutor hired to conduct the investigation is also a long time republican. He just happens to be one with some integrity.

Monegan

You know what gets me? After reading this repor, and all the news articles, is WOW what a decent and intellegent guy Monegan is. I mean here he is giving Palin the best advice possible "back off this could hurt you" and she didn't listen. Seems he was trying to look out for her best interest.

After watching the MegS-LesG

After watching the MegS-LesG exchange on KTUU, I am convinced Meg needs to move on. The discussion was 20 times too long. A nice retort would have been, “I was only trying to relay the facts as we know them. To the extent anything I said or the way I said it was offensive to Walt Monegan, I apologize. Have a nice day Les.” Less Gara is afforded way too much camera time. Our local communist, Les, never apologizes for his offenses and Les Gara is one of the most offensive and impolite legislators Alaska has ever had. He has been a staunch supporter of Palin as she was devastating the Alaska economy as Governess with policies Les loves. Then once she was on the national RNC ticket, Les turned against her with a vengeance. This FACT is EVIDENCE ENOUGH for all Alaskan’s that the issues in trooper gate became fair political game to Les Gara. Les loves Obama and has his picture right next to Fidel, Hugo and Vladimir on his bathroom wall(Les is a dead-ringer for Vlad Stalin). Oddly, the picture of Barrack is right where the picture of Sarah used to be when she was part of the Alaska Socialist Party with Les. Becoming a RNC candidate disqualified her from his love-nest.

Gara Look-alike

AKConservative you are correct in most of your entry, but Les looks like Vlad LENIN. Les' hero Stalin's first name was Josef. Gara is one of the most despicable legislators we have had in Juneau. He cannot earn a living practicing law, so he has to do soemthing that provides a steady paycheck. Why not be a legislator from the most liberal part of Anchorage. It's a job where you don't have to accomplish anything except--Johnny Ellis is proof of that. All you have to do is act like you are doing something, like Les' buddy Ethan Berkowitz. Without the government feed trough, these guys and their friends would starve.

Yea...that darn Gara

He was one of those darn guys who stood up against corruption in legislature. No wonder you're mad at him. He sent a whole pack of your heros to prison with those pesky ethics laws.

You're right, Les is so pure

However, he had no role in sending any of the scofflaws to prison. That was the work of the FBI. One thing Les did do was to violate campaign finance laws with illegal fund raising. But that's OK since the money was going to his fellow liberals. Count your lucky stars that the statute of limitations had run on the Knowles gang. VECO owned that administration lock, stock and penny loafers.

Personal attacks

I agree that Rep. Gara can be a less than perfect legislator, but these personal attacks are not acceptable in polite society and are not how the Founding Fathers expected responsible citizens to act. The best thing that Senator McCain has done lately is to express his strong disapproval of this kind of politics of demonization; you should follow his lead.

Less than perfect?

That's putting it mildly. Ask Jane Angvik how "polite" Les was when he attacked her during their primary race for challenging his Democratic Party credentials (If you don't remember, Less was a big promoter of Green Party candidate Ralph Nader in 2000). Gara is full of venom and he spits his bitterness at anyone who challenges him or disagrees with him. If you do not believe as he does then you are an corrupt enemy for he is the self-righteous one who knows the true way. Reminds me of Bolshevik thinking.

Congratulations to you,

Congratulations to you, Andrew, and all the others willing to stick their necks out on behalf of Alaska. This was a true "country before party" effort. We are all HUGELY grateful to you for your tenacity and integrity in searching for the truth, no matter where it led. I am hopeful that the hard working Mat Maid mgmt and employees whose lives were intentionally destroyed by the Palins can also get some comfort from seeing this truth made public. I know there are alot of people out there still unwilling to believe the Palins were out for their own personal gain, that their obsessive, unethical actions were somehow justified. For them, I have a quote I came across yesterday: "There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true." Soren Kierkegaard. Although this is a happy day in that the vindication is public, it's also sad because it undeniably proves that Alaska has been home to an unethical governor and her administrators who would intentionally violate the trust and destroy the livelihoods of fellow Alaskans. Shame on you, Sarah & Todd & Co.

Denial!!!

What planet is Ms. Palin from?? The legislative body of 10 Repubs and 4 Dems that looked into this and voted their conscience, and then here she is in some faraway state campaigning, denying what has been found. Get the people in the white suits out and take her to API, quickly!!!

More Palin abuse of power?

Is it true the Palins' $550,000 home was built for free by developers who got the contract to build the sports complex that put taxpayers $30 million in debt? Is this ok with you folks in Alaska? --E.Jones

Wassilla Ice Rink = New House for Palins

It is likely. People are asking the questions; you know, following the money. Who knows which person will break the story.

Say Ed Jones, that would be too outrageous,

even for sarahbaracoudashoulda.
